I am saddened to announced the death of one of the most brilliant actors of our generation. Alan Sidney Patrick Rickman died today in London at the age of 69. His death was confirmed on Thursday by his family who said that he died “surrounded by family and friends”. Rickman had been suffering from cancer.
Rickman was one of those actors that you recognized the moment you heard his voice or saw his face. He was unmistakable. Many Americans have remembered his face since 1988, when he starred as Hans Gruber, Bruce Willis’s dastardly adversary in Die Hard – a part he was offered two days after arriving in Los Angeles, at aged 41. Gruber was only the first of three memorable baddies played by Rickman: he was an outrageous sheriff of Nottingham in 1991’s Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, as well as a terrifying Rasputin in an acclaimed 1995 HBO film. The third would come much later in the form of Severus Snape in the Harry Potter series. There were many movies and TV series dispersed throughout.
For many, his sex appeal was also unmistakeable. Rickman appeared as Valmont, the mordant seducer in Christopher Hampton’s Les Liaisons Dangereuses on Broadway in 1986. He was nominated for a Tony award for this bit of stage work. However the word of mouth made him truly famous after his costar, Lindsay Duncan, memorably said of his sonorous performance that audiences would leave the theater wanting to have sex “and preferably with Alan Rickman”. *ahem*
Alan Rickman has no equal. He is a beautiful man, an amazing actor, and will always be the only Severus Snape. He taught me that heroes and villains are not a one sided, plain and simple, black and white type of idea. He embodied the aspect of choosing to make choices and live for someone other than yourself, down to the very last moment of your life.
And by God, he helped young me figure out that I sure as hell loved a deep voiced man more than pretty much... ANYTHING. Thank you, Mr. Rickman. ;-)
