Korean 101: Really Important Words You Don't Learn Until It's Too Late!

Here are four words that aren't usually taught in Korean books until later chapters but they're really important to know if you're traveling in Korea! 불안전 - Caution/Unsafe! (bool-ahn-jeon) 위험 - Danger! (wee-heom) 금지 - Prohibited (keum-ji) You can usually figure out what they mean by what the sign is on (its usually for parking or smoking^^) 셀프 - Self (sel-peu) This is listed in restaurants and usually applies to water, silverware, and banchan (side dishes) It's not super rude, but if you ask for water when the sign clearly says "get it yourself" the waitress might be a little annoyed. Example: 물은 셀프 = get the water yourself! Korean Food: EXPLAINED

I remember when we were learning cooking words in my Korean class my mind was BLOWN because thanks to Korean food I had know these verbs all along! 비빔밥 - Bi-Bim-Bap 비비다 - To mix (bi-bi-da) So literally 비빔밥 is "mixed rice" That is why when you are served 비빔밥, you have to mix the rice and veggies before eating! 볶음밥 - Bo-kkeum-bap 볶다 - To fry (bokk-da) So literally 볶음밥 is "fried rice" Kimchi fried rice is 김치볶음밥 :) 덮밥 - Deop-bap 덮다 - To cover (deop-da) So literally 덮밥 is "covered rice" The difference between kimchi deopbap and kimchi bokkeumbap is that with deopbap the other ingredients aren't mixed in yet. They are placed on top of or next to the rice. With bokkeumbap everything is mixed together while cooking! You can also listen to this adorable song about making Ramen!
