I've seen a lot of people confused on what STATION is and I wanted to explain to those who don't know! SM Station was first introduced on January 27th, 2016 by the founding chairman of SM, Lee Sooman (who is now a producer and executive at SM/also known as the 'President of Culture.') Sooman held a showcase in January that year to introduce SM's new project "Neo Culture Technology." Within that showcase Sooman announced that for the past 20 years SM has been keeping to their own "Culture Technology" otherwise known as "CT." He goes further to explain the aspects of "CT" and that there are four stages to "CT," those being Casting, Training, Producing, and Marketing. Sooman announced that they were to be taking the "CT" they had been using the past 20 years and recreating it into a more advanced system, "Neo Culture Technology." He noted that interaction was the main thing they were looking for out of this new system. SM wants to communicate and "interact" with us. That was when he announced that he'd be introducing five new projects and a new group (NCT.) Within those five projects was SM Station. SM Station is a digital music channel where music is released weekly for the entire year. The whole point of this digital music channel was to stray from the norm in South Korea, where the norms are albums, mini albums, and single albums. Station would be a digital music channel where music is released digitally (on YouTube) and not promoted like any other songs off albums. SM want to break into the digital music market more. The whole purpose of Station is to showcase the artists and producers of SM, and also include collaborations with artists from outside the label. SM Station Season 1 began on February 3rd, 2016 with Taeyeon's "Rain" and ended with Suho & Song Youngjoo's "Curtain." Season 1 ended on February 3rd, 2017. Station Season 2 was announced in February of 2017 and was said to feature foreign artists in it's season. The season officially began on March 31st, 2017 with Red Velvet's "Would U" and came to it's conclusion on April 6th, 2018 with Ten's (NCT) "New Heroes." In August of 2018 the third season of Station was announced dubbed as "Station X 0" (Station Young) which would be aimed towards the younger generation. Season three began on August 10th, 2018 with Taeyeon & Melomance's "Page 0" and is currently ongoing. The most recent two Station tracks are Baekhyun & Loco's "Young" and Chanyeol & Sehun's "We Young." So, just to go over some things again (and add a few more things in ) I'll bullet point them below: ~The word New and Neo are interchangable in Neo Culture Technology, however when it comes to the group NCT, member Doyoung has stated the term they use is Neo. However New is used in Sooman's speech and later Neo is used as well. ~The word Neo is probably related to the word Neologism, which is basically a term used to describe something new. Neologism: "A newly coined word or expression." ~SM Station is a part of "NCT" and not to be confused with the group of the same name. Though both are part of the same cultural project. ~NCT (I am talking about the group here) is a concept for a project and technically is only a term to describe that the group's concept of having unlimited members divided into many sub-units. ~Station has three seasons, each season seems so far to focus on different themes. ~Station is all digital and can be found on SM's YouTube channel. ~The Station songs have the potential to be performed live at SM's Station Concerts. ~Some Station songs end up on albums, ex1: Ten's "Dream in a Dream" and NCT U's "Timeless" were on the NCT 2018 album. ex2: SM Station releases an album of all Station songs after every season finishes. ~Sooman describes Station as like a "subway station." "Each song is 'one station,' and just like how you move and transfer from one subway station to another daily, feel free to wander around one station to another within the 'SM Station' channel."
