Children book illustration as a part of culture
As you know, illustration is the basis of book graphics. The term “illustration” comes from the Latin “illustrare”, which means to illuminate, shed light, and explain. The very word “illustration” means a live description or a visual image. The term “illustration” can be understood both in the broad and in the narrow sense of the word. Book graphics are not just part of publishing or a medium for transferring knowledge. It is part of the culture. A children's book, made at a high artistic level, is a cultural monument, like any work of art. The richer and more complex the ideas of the time are expressed in it, the more perfect its plastic qualities, the more convincing and durable it is. An illustration in a children's book, if it is a manifestation of high creativity, like other types and genres of art, is involved in the formation of the artistic style of the era. Illustration is not just an addition to the text, but a work of art of its time. The communication skill of a person with a work of art, without which there cannot be a highly educated viewer who understands plastic arts, begins with the perception of illustrations in a children's book. The path to understanding the easel form imperceptibly for the person himself also begins with a book illustration. She first forms the aesthetic taste of the child, teaches associative thinking, perception of the image, color, proportions, texture. Book illustration as an art form In a narrow, strict sense, illustrations are works intended for perception in unity with the text that is found in the book. A literary work and illustrations to it are something whole. Book illustrations removed from the text may lose some of their artistic value and become obscure and inexpressive. Each of them, referring to a certain place in the text and being an independent composition, is interconnected at the same time with all other illustrations and is most fully perceived only with them. Illustrations can enrich a literary work, but they can also impoverish it if they weaken the impression of it or give it an incorrect interpretation. A good children book illustrator is a co-author of the book, he makes the ideas and images of the writer visible, helping to better represent the era, life, and surroundings of the book’s heroes. But this does not mean at all that illustration gives its interpretation of a literary work, with the help of graphic means it reveals and conveys the social and artistic essence of the illustrated work.
