Twitter's Biggest Celebrity WAR
"Gun in my purse, b*tch I came dressed to kill...." On July 21st, Nicki Minaj took to Twitter to release her frustrations with the MTV VMAs nominations. Minaj is largely upset that her music video "Anaconda" was not nominated for Best Choreography and Best Video of the Year when it definitely should have been. Nicki Minaj's "Anaconda" hit 19.6 million views in the first 24 hours breaking all previous VEVO records. The next to break Minaj's VEVO records was Taylor Swift which is why when Minaj refers to "girls" in her tweets, it's why many think is ultimately a poke at Swift. The "Anaconda" video caused a media storm filled with men sexualizing Minaj, women critiquing, thousands of memes, celebrity mockery, and Minaj risking her self image. Everyone who was anyone talked about that video and was OBSESSED. However, MTV Video Music Awards still didn't nominate her video. Ridiculous. This isn't the first time a video that deserved a nomination was snubbed. Katy Perry's "Roar" was not nominated last year when the view count for her video broke multiple records. She took to Twitter last year prior to the awards upset over the nominations. It has now opened the gates for all artists to feel comfortable to use their voice to call out the award show when they know they deserved a nomination. Minaj called out the award show saying that she has done everything the other nominees have done in her series of tweets but because she is black, she's been discriminated against and everyone knows it : It all started out with Minaj pointing out the flaws in how nominees are selected... Then Taylor Swift swooped in and reprimanded Minaj's tweets in the stance of faux-feminism. Minaj responded proving that Swift was in the wrong. Swift tried to make it about herself completely missing Minaj's point. And yet in all of the chaos, Kim Kardashian still managed to get involved... Ryan Seacrest jumped in siding with Swift which led to a swarm of attacks at Seacrest. He eventually deleted his tweet that victimized Swift and made Minaj look like she was attacking and weak. Yikes. And then Meek Mill thought it'd also be appropriate to throw shade at Drake. Horrible timing. Of course Bruno Mars tried to lighten the situation by launching a fake Twitter fight against Ed Sheeran. Aaron Paul invited the girls to pancakes. Indirectly, they were all mocking the girls and their behavior. They got to sit back and watch the show unfold... Katy Perry favorited Bruno Mar's tweet amidst the criticism of Taylor Swift. SHOCKER. "Black women influence pop culture so much but are rarely rewarded for it." Fans are NOT HAPPY with the nominations or Taylor Swift. In the past, Best Music Video of the Year is the top award for genre-defining videos. It's been given to Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance", Katy Perry's "Firework", Beyoncé's "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)", and Sinéad O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U" in the past. Minaj is simply pointing out that nominations should be given and awarded to artists who are getting it based off of achievement. That's what an award show is for. Do you think Minaj is in the right? I think so.
Ed Sheeran Defends New Tattoo
Ed Sheeran is facing major backlash from fans after posting a picture of his new tattoo. Though, Sheeran is known for his really bizarre tattoo choices : lego head, a teddy bear, Puss In Boots, Pingu, The Word 'Prince', gingerbread man, and a snowflake. So for Sheeran to get a lion plastered across his chest right between his nipples, so be it. However, his fans are largely upset. The 24-year-old is defending his decision because HE LIKES IT. And he's right, the only opinion that matters is his own opinion. He has over 31,000 comments on Instagram, over 6,000 retweets on Twitter, and thousands of comments posted across the web regarding the new tattoo. Sheeran has credited his new ink to celebrity tattoo artist, Kevin Paul. Kevin Paul tweeted, "It's mad how so many people are jumping on the band wagon to talk about eds tattoo that's only halfway done." Almost every comment from a fan is negative which may be putting some pressure on Sheeran however, there's no turning back now. Ed Sheeran doesn't care about your opinion. Many people think it's a tribute to Cecil the lion. So here's a few comments that people have said : "Cecil the lion didn't die for this." "Ed Sheeran's new tattoo looks like one of them paint by numbers you'd find in a zoo gift shop." "I was not emotionally prepared to wake up this morning and see a new picture of Ed Sheeran's chest tattoo." "Damn ugly." "Coming from a guy who loves tattoos this is horrendous sorry bye" "i'm so mad at ed's tattoo i feel like it's not real" YIKES. Well, at least Ed Sheeran has some pasta for comfort. What do you think of his new tattoo? Cool? Or a BIG mistake?
Exploring the 2014 Grammy's Album of the Year Nominees
The Grammy's have released their nominations for 2014, and I wanted to offer my thoughts on the four albums nominated for Album of the Year. I won't comment on the actual process of picking these albums, but rather just focus on the nominees as they appear. Please let me know your thoughts in the comments! Album of the Year "Beyonce" - Beyonce Beyonce stunned the world with her secret release of this album, complete with visuals to accompany each track. This album really makes us look into how the music industry and the world of the physical CD will change in the very near future. Album format aside, she also recorded a seriously great collection of songs. The sequencing of this album with songs crossing and creating genres was not an easy task, and the Queen B team managed it flawlessly (pun intended) "x" - Ed Sheeran This album is filled with songs that I always find myself asking my friends 'who is this?' when I overhear it on the radio. I don't know whether that is a good or bad thing when it comes to a relatively new artist. Sheeran is experimenting with new sounds (dare I say rapping?) and is taking his acoustic singer-songwriter title and setting it on fire. While I much prefer his lyrics over his music, I loved what I heard of the album. I hope he continues to grow as an artist and while I don't think this is his year, I look forward to more work from him. "In the Lonely Hour" - Sam Smith I fell for this album fast and hard. Sam Smith busted on to the scene with 'Latch' and that ridiculously catchy chorus, but his solo tracks have the ability to cut through you. Songs like Stay with Me and Restart have actually put me in fetal position before - mainly because Sam Smith has the uncanny ability of telling the whole ugly truth of emotions. I can't speak more highly of this entire piece. "Morning Phase" - Beck This album has already picked up Best Album at the World Music Awards this year and continues to find a strong place on charts all over the world. This is actually the only album on the list that I haven't delved into, so forgive me for not having any comments on it. I'll put this high on my to-listen list! "Girl" - Pharrell Williams Pharrell Williams has music running through his veins. For someone who has been in the industry for as long as he has (check for yourself, you won't believe it!) and to still be able to reinvent himself as an artist is incredible. While many of these tracks sound like a music supervisors dream (very commercial friendly) I can't say this was my favorite album of the year. I appreciate Pharrell more as a whole than I do taking his work as separate entities.
