Joe Maddon wins Manager of the Year
Not that this is terribly surprising, but it's newsworthy all the same: Joe Maddon is the National League's Manager of the Year. The Cubs went 97-65 this season, a year after going just 73-89. They made the playoffs via the Wild Card and progressed to the NLCS, where they were eventually swept by the Mets in four games. Maddon's presence with the team certainly went a long, long way to turning things around for one of the league's most troubled franchises. It's not all about Maddon, though - this Cubs team was nothing like the 2014 edition. The emergence of young future (and even present) superstars like Kris Bryant and Kyle Schwarber turned this team on its head. The youngsters, combined with amazing seasons by Anthony Rizzo and pitcher Jake Arrieta made the Cubs one of the most feared teams in the National League. Many had them picked to win the World Series before they ran into the piping-hot Mets in the NLCS. They met an unstoppable force and couldn't pull it off, but had a great season nonetheless. In a somewhat surprising move, the Mets' Terry Collins finished third in Manager of the Year voting behind Maddon and Mike Matheny of the Cardinals. Sure, the Cardinals finished with the best record in baseball, but if you ask me, what Collins did as manager was more impressive than Matheny's work. The Mets' head honcho took a minor league roster and guided them through a brutal first half of the season before picking up some huge mid-season acquisitions and turning on the style late in the season, reaching the World Series before falling to the Royals. Sure, none of this actually matters, and I think most people pretty much agreed that Maddon would win Manager of the Year. Many probably picked Collins to finish second ahead of Matheny, but that's just making an argument for no reason. So, there we have it baseball fans: Maddon, Matheny, Collins. Is this the right order? Would you have given the award to someone else? @ButterflyBlu @superiorsl @Starbell808 @DonnaMelton @jokes @BEAUTYgirlARIEL @David19Flo23 @karencorchado @SamuelRodriguez @xitlalicordova1 @AndrewMaldonado @Link4TW @DannyMoses @ClaySharko @Ravenwing92 @FromBlue2U @LemissaNicole @BossDominata @MalikLawary @KyleBerke @DerekGumtow @Straightshooter @Kirooken @TravisManning @GalacticChakra @ChristopherKenn @MrTenThirty @JasonNilsson @addri @GinnaL13 @VeronicaArtino @TomasVasquez
Here's the full MLB playoff schedule
It's playoff time! Who's excited? I know I am - and I bet my fellow baseball fans are too! @mchlyang @christianmordi @ButterflyBlu @superiorsl !! Let's take a look at the Wild Card and NLDS schedule. It all gets started this Tuesday at 8PM ET as Houston travels to the Bronx to face the Yankees. The Yankees could have a tough time with the AL Cy Young frontrunner and 20-game winner, but it should be an intense game one way or the other. Win or go home! In the NL Wild Card, the Cubs face the Pirates in Pittsburgh at 8PM ET on Wednesday. This game also features a likely Cy Young winner, as Jake Arrieta will look to continue his masterful second half and knock out the Cubs' division rivals. After those Wild Card games are settled, we enter into the Division Series. Each series is a 5-game set, with the team with home field advantage playing host in games 1, 2, and 5. Both sets in the National league follow the same schedule of games. MLB Top Plays of the Day (09/20/15)
Here are your Top 5 Plays of the Day! 5. Matt Duffy (San Francisco Giants) A ground ball hit slowly on the third baseline wasn't going to stop Matt Duffy make this amazing play! He made the throw across his body and retired Nick Ahmed to end the inning. The ball looked like it was going to be an infield hit but Duffy made this exceptional play and let the Giants to a 5-1 win over the Diamondbacks. 4. Chase Utley (Los Angeles Dodgers) The ball was shot up the middle but Chase Utley smothered the ball and made a perfect throw on one knee to first to get the out! The 36 year-old veteran has shown strong defense throughout his entire career and this was just one more play that he added to his repertoire. The Dodgers however fell to the Pirates 4-3. 3. David Murphy (Los Angeles Angels) A strong line drive was hit to left field but David Murphy wasn't going to allow any hits. Murphy chased the ball, lunged for it, and made a beautiful diving catch to end the inning. HIs team however fell to the hot Twins 8-1. 2. Eugenio Suarez (Cincinnati Reds) Eugenio Suarez backhanded that ball and it was a long throw to first. It seemed like a very close call but the first base umpire first ruled the play safe. Reds manager Bryan Price however wasn't going to let it go without a challenge. And after a video review, the decision was overturned and his amazing play even got better with that out. It's always so tough to get a lot out of a throw like that but he made it into a perfect play. The Reds however lost 8-4 against the Milwaukee Brewers. 1. Jason Heyward (St. Louis Cardinals) It was a fly ball lifted into right field. Heyward however wasn't going to be satisfied with just one out. He throws a laser beam to home plate and gets it in time for two outs. He got into a perfect throwing position, it was a perfect throw, and he wowed everyone with a double play. And the Cardinals who are the number one ranked team in the MLB, beat the Chicago Cubs, the third best team in the MLB 4-3. Now that was your Top 5 Plays of the Day from last night's games! Series preview: St. Louis Cardinals vs. Chicago Cubs
Here's a preview of the final NLDS Series, this one a Midwest showdown between the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals. Let's take a look. St. Louis Cardinals Season record: 100-62 Home record: 55-26 Away record: 45-36 Key players: Michael Wacha (SP), Matt Carpenter (3B), Jhonny Peralta (SS), Jason Heyward (RF) Key injuries: Carlos Martinez (SP), Yadier Molina (C) Projected starters: John Lackey, Jaime Garcia, Wacha, Lance Lynn, Lackey Here's what you need to know: The Cardinals are a team that seems to be engineered for October baseball year after year. They just do not stop. While the team has suffered countless injuries this season - including recent ones to huge players like their ace Martinez and captain Molina - you can never count them out. Rookie Steven Piscotty seems to get big hit after big hit and the Cards are just never out of it. They also have probably the best home crowd in the league and are tough to beat in St. Louis. Chicago Cubs Season record: 97-65 Home record: 49-32 Away record: 48-33 Key players: Jake Arrieta (SP), Kyle Schwarber (RF), Kris Bryant (3B), Anthony Rizzo (1B) Key injuries: None Projected starters: John Lester, Kyle Hendricks, Arrieta, Lester, Arrieta Here's what you need to know: Is this finally the year for the Cubs? Back to the Future II projected them to finally win it all in 2015 and it looks within the realm of possibility. After beating the Pirates in a heated Wild Card game, the Cubs have more momentum than any team in the league. Arrieta is on an absolutely wild run and should win NL Cy Young - he has been the best player in baseball over the past three months. Rookies Schwarber and Bryant are hitting the snot out of the ball. Watch out for these Cubbies. My projection: While the Cardinals were the best team in the league all year, in the playoffs it's all about pitching and momentum. The Cubs have the league's best pitcher and loads of momentum. While the Cardinals may be a grittier team with more experience, I think the Cubs are just better at this point. I'm taking the Cubs in 5 as an upset. What about you? @christianmordi @mchlyang @ljk901023 @TessStevens @ButterflyBlu @superiorsl @Starbell808 @jokes @DonnaMelton @BEAUTYgirlARIEL @David19Flo23 @karencorchado @SamuelRodriguez @xitlalicordova1 @AndrewMaldonado @Shippudenguy21 @RosePark
Cubs eliminate Cardinals and move on to NLCS
It's a sad day in St. Louis. No, seriously. Cashiers at grocery stores work without smiles. The city is in a haze - you can almost taste it. This means a lot to St. Louisians. The Cardinals - owners of baseball's best record for virtually the entire season - were eliminated from the playoffs at the hands of the red-hot Chicago Cubs. What happened? The best team won, that's what happened. The truth is that the Cardinals were a gritty team all year, but without Yadier Molina and Carlos Martinez (their only true ace), who both got injured at the very end of the regular season, they were a team without real punch. The Cubs, on the other hand, look like they might be the best team in baseball. They dominated the Cards in four games, smacking an MLB record 9 home runs in a span of just two playoff games. This team hits the absolute lights out. With rookie phenoms Kyle Schwarber and Kris Bryant, not only are the Cubs crushing it now; they look like they're built for the future, too. Oh, yeah: winning in four games also means they get to get extra rest for the best pitcher in baseball. Also on the Cubs. With the Mets and Dodgers not playing until Thursday, Arrieta will get at least a few more days rest before being ready to go in Game 1 of the NLDS, regardless of who he faces. That's trouble for the opponent. I know I picked the Cubs to win the series before it started, but I didn't expect them to completely dominate like they did. They look scary good. I wouldn't want to face the Cubs right now. No matter who I am. I'm not sure they can be beaten - maybe this is finally their year? Or is it too soon to say? @christianmordi @mchlyang @ljk901023 @TessStevens @ButterflyBlu @superiorsl @Starbell808 @jokes @DonnaMelton @BEAUTYgirlARIEL @David19Flo23 @karencorchado @SamuelRodriguez @xitlalicordova1 @AndrewMaldonado @Shippudenguy21 @RosePark Can the Cubs really get it done?
MLB Top Plays of the Day (09/13/15)
Here are your Top 5 Plays of the Day! 5. Jason Heyward (St. Louis Cardinals) The Cardinals' nightmare has finally come to an end. Cards' defense was exceptional today with Yadier Molina throwing out NL basestealing leader Billy Hamilton. But the MVP goes to Heyward for snagging Ivan De Jesus Jr.'s home run especially when the game was still in doubt. Heyward learned his lesson on Saturday when Adam Duvall's two run homer bounced off the top of the wall. The Cardinals beat the Reds 9-2. 4. Khris Davis (Milwaukee Brewers) If only the Brewers have won, this guy would have been the Man of the Match. Khris Davis robbed a homer from Francisco Cervelli and kept his team going. He not only robbed that homer, he blasted a two-run homer the next inning to keep the Brewers alive. Despite an amazing performance both defensively and offensivley by Davis, the Brewers lose to the Pirates 7-6 in the 11th inning. 3. Brian Bogusevic (Philadelphia Phillies) The Phillies' right fielder, Brian Bogusevic, and his fully extended diving catch robbed Dexter Fowler's potential double. You could see starting pitcher, Aaron Harang, show his appreciation with an air-five! With Bogusevic's amazing play, the Chicago Cubs lost to the Phillies (the worst team in the MLB) 7-4. 2. Lonnie Chisenhall (Cleveland Indians) The Indians' Right Fielder made this impressive play in deep right field. It was an all out diving effort all the way to the warning track and stole a possible double, or even a triple away from Rajai Davis. Despite Justin Verlander starting for the Tigers' mound, Detroit lost to the Tribe 7-2. 1. Brandon Barnes (Colorado Rockies) And the number one play from last night's games come from Brandon Barnes of the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies' left fielder not only made a phenomenal play, he made that play into a double play. This was the game-winner for the Rockies as they topped the Seattle Mariners 3-2. Barnes said he felt a bit dizzy after he slammed his head into the ground but he kept his focus to sling the ball to first and throw out Ketel Marte. Now that was your Top 5 Plays of the Day from last night's games!
