Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption is an actual church created by John Oliver and his team in another amazing attempt to point out something ridiculous going on in the US. This time it's televangelism.
Recognize this guy? It's Robert Tilton, one of the most well-known televangelists of this generation. He scams tons of Americans into giving him large portions of their income..not without some return, of course!! He promises that these donations will cure cancer, help people lose weight and most ironically, help them get out of debt.
You'd think there would be laws in place to control these obvious scams, but no, add this to the list of ridiculous things that America allows people to get away with. Not only is this totally legal, people like Robert Tilton are ROLLING IN IT. They have mansions and private jets all paid for with donations.
To prove just how ridiculous it is that these scam artists can start churches, John Oliver starts his own.....and it's surprisingly easy.
"Please send us your actual money. If you do this (and this is real) great things will happen to you, and that's apparently something I'm allowed to say!"
