Traveling is amazing. It shows you entirely different cultures, people, traditions, lands, and usually some pretty beautiful beaches and churches. Its something everyone should do in their life, because seeing the world opens your mind and your heart to everything this life has to offer.
But what happens when you go on a long trip without your S.O.?
Last year me and my friend spent months planning a 5 week backpacking Euro-trip. We choose the perfect hostels, got our Euro-rail tickets and were ready to go. I was so excited and my boyfriend was so happy for me. But as my departure date drew near I couldn't help but start to freak.
I was going to be away, without access to my phone (except for hostels) for 5 weeks without my best friend. And while my stomach was turning at the what ifs that always attack the anxious mind (what if he dies while I'm away and other insane thoughts), I told no one. Because I didn't want people to think I was a silly girl missing out on the opportunity of a lifetime because her boyfriend wasn't traveling with her.
Now, I did have an AMAZING time, and my boyfriend drove the 3 hours down to my house the day I landed to see me, but there is something to be said about traveling while in a relationship but without your S.O.

It will be hard. It will be worth it.

But sometimes it won't feel that way at first.

I loved my trip and I would do it again in a heart beat. I had some of the best weeks of my life abroad. But I also had some of the hardest moments.
Frustration at shitty hostel wifi, anxiety when I couldn't make sure everything was ok, and a tad bit of feeling left out when clubbing with friends at hostels ends up with hookups that led me to dancing the night away by myself. And that isn't a big deal, dancing with people always gets complicated anyway, but sometimes you just wish you could have your person with you.
Which is what making traveling without your S.O. so difficult to explain. Because you wish you were with them all the time, but you can not imagine leaving such an amazing trip. You just can't.
So don't feel bad about how you feel. Don't let anyone make you feel guilty for missing your S.O., but don't let it ruin your trip. Because trust me they want you to have all the fun in the world, and can't wait to hear about it when you come back.
Check out this super cute, amazing video, of a birthday surprise when a girlfriend was traveling for 6 months.
