10 Panic! At The Disco Songs That'll Help You Move On
Love is a fickle thing. It comes and goes faster than you can snap your fingers. Certain bands have a way of documenting the bitterness you feel after a break-up, or the freedom of taking a break. Panic! At The Disco is one of those bands. So, if you've been hurt or tricked, heart-broken or forgotten, this one's for you. 1. Nicotine / Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die! Bitter break-ups are a real thing. Trust me, I've been there. Sometimes you get addicted to a person and the way they make you feel. Losing control and hope can lead to freedom...but more or less it just results in a dependence on destruction. Nicotine is an ode to that. When people become addictive, we know it's probably time to move on, just for our own safety. When you enter a relationship that is unstable and exciting, we can fall into bad habits, and just like Nicotine...that person could very well ruin your life. Best Lyric: "Just one more hit and then we're through / cause you could never love me back." 2. Mercenary / Batman Arkham City Soundtrack A lot of fans missed this song because of its limited release. But it's a fantastic song to listen to right after you break up with someone and need reassurance that yes, being alone is hard, but it's better than being jerked around. Best Lyric: I dodge the blast and apologize for collateral damage. Because while we can't save every relationship, we can acknowledge what we learned from the worst ones. 3. Nearly Witches (Ever Since We Met) / Vices Virtues Much like Nicotine, this song centers on the idea of addiction. The person you're with gives you a feeling like no other, and when that crash lands to earth and the honeymoon is over...your feelings have to deal. When something is really really good, and we end up having to let it go for some reason, we almost wish it never happened. By removing the experience of that person, we don't have to feel the pain. Best Lyric: "Ever since we met / I only shoot-up with your perfume / Its the only thing / that makes me feel as good as you do / ever since we met / I've got just one regret to live through/ and that one regret is you." 4. Turn off the Lights / Vices Virtues, Bonus Track After being single for a little while, this song became my anthem. It nails that empty feeling you get after you leave someone for the last time. Things are never easy after you get hurt, or you hurt someone else. But escaping...into a world of your choosing whether it be work, playing music, or finding someone new, could be the anecdote to your love-sick heart. I identify with this song because it's very honest. The lyrics ring out like a lost call over a forgotten battlefield, "Our consciences are always so much heavier than our egos." Sometimes the scariest moments in our lives are when we're forced to be alone with our thoughts. Best Lyric: "I've got my heavy heart to hold me down / once it falls apart / my head's in the clouds." 5. Time To Dance / A Fever You Can't Sweat Out Heavily inspired by Chuck Palahniuk "Invisible Monsters", Time To Dance is an exposing of the fickle nature of beauty and the effect on our relationships with others. When you leave a relationship or are reluctant to move on, there's going to be a lot of anger involved. You're going to feel like you're being pulled in a lot of different directions, and your friends, parents, whoever...are all going to want to weigh in on what you do. "Give me a break" is a lyric that you'll hear in your head over and over again. Sometimes all you need when you're trying to move on is the attention of someone else. Best Lyric: "Give me envy, give me malice, give me your attention, give me envy, give me malice, give me a break." 6. Bittersweet / Vices Virtues Bonus Track When you're trapped in a relationship that you know is doomed, you can often feel like you're setting yourself up for failure. A trap. Bittersweet is the perfect song to soundtrack your hopeless devotion to someone you know won't last for long. There are so many things wrong with this person and this relationship, but you can't pull yourself away. Ever experience that? There is a downside to literally everything, but sometimes you just need that. You have to have that disastrous relationship in order to figure out when things are really really good. Best Lyric: "All that hate is gonna burn you up / it keeps me warm at night." 7. Northern Downpour / Pretty Odd Every break-up or change has that "I'm sad and I need to cry about this for a few minutes" song. Northern Downpour is that song. It's about missing someone. It's about longing for the past. We all go through those moments. Even though we want to be the people who say "fuck 'em!" and move on, we can't always do that. It's not possible or healthy. Sometimes we just have to cry it out and be fond for the times when we were happy. People come and go, and that 's not an easy thing to cope with...but our worlds never stop turning. Best Lyric: "I missed your skin when you were East / You clicked your heels and wished for me." 8. This is Gospel / Too Weird to Live Too Rare to Die Things end for a reason. Whether they were doomed from the start, or just became that way because of new people, new situations, or new personality traits emerging doesn't matter. What matters is that things are falling apart, and rather than committing to polishing the brass on the Titanic, you have to let it go. There is an old adage, "If you love something let it go." And even though the fear of being alone can cripple you, you have to take the dive, and let things go, because somewhere down the line, you'll thank yourself. Best Lyric: If you love me let me go. 9. Hallelujah! / Death of a Bachelor This is the "I'm owning up to my past romantic mistakes and moving on" song. For all the bachelors and bachelorettes who seem to jump from person to person without so much as a passing glance, this one is for you. Reforming your ways and wanting to settle down isn't a crime. "In a state of emergency, who was I trying to be?" If you're trying to fill the void with people, you know there has to be another way to make yourself happy. Each casual affair ends worse than the last, and if you can't figure out why you keep failing...just listen to the music. Best Lyric: "Nobody wants you when you have no heart." 10. New Perspective / Jennifer's Body Soundtrack Okay, so we know what we did wrong. We know all the people we've hurt. We know we need to change...so how? "Stop there and let me correct it / I wanna live a life from a New Perspective." Sometimes when things keep failing, we need to change how we see things. Moving on is all about getting a new perspective on life. We have to look for different qualities in people. We have to grow up a little bit. So if your previous relationships are utter failures, that doesn't have to dictate your romantic future. You have control over this. Give yourself a break and learn from your mistakes. Heartbreak aside...you'll get through it. It's okay, you can move on. Best Lyric: "We move along in some new passion knowing everything is fine.
BTS Fire and WTF Is Tropical House?
Alright y'all, we're going to talk about a topic that affects each and every one of us: TROPICAL HOUSE. It's a subgenre of house music that is influenced by instruments such as steel drums usually used in Jamaican, Cuban, etc music. It's been getting more and more popularity these days but I was still surprised to hear it in at BTS song! It is most noticeable in Rap Mon's part at 2:15. That awesome sound in the back? That's classic Tropical House music! Here are some more examples if you dig that sound: Jeremih - Don't Tell 'Em Thanks to @Lizzeh for reminding me about this awesome example!!!! Justin Bieber - Sorry & What Do You Mean Beibs made his comeback completely backed by this music. It sounds fresh, fun, and you CAN'T STOP LISTENING TO IT. Kygo - Stay Often referenced as the king of the rebirth of TropHouse, Kygo is your go-to DJ if you want nothing but Tropical House in your ears. Skrillex and Diplo - Where Are Ü Now This was the song that really brought the sound to mainstream recently. Those "dolphin sounds" or however you choose to describe it...yup, TropHouse. Fifth Harmony - Worth It & Work It's leaking into the girl group pop scene too with Fifth Harmony using an almost 8-bit take on Trop-Pop. Still groovy. Jamie XX - Loud Places And then we have Jamie XX that combines his smooth sleepy sounds from the XX with the catchy pop of Tropical House. Needless to say, it was love at first listen. Even though it has existed for a long time (and the influences that inspired existed looooooooooong before) I'm glad to hear more of it now in mainstream music! Enjoy!
Why Are These Kids At A Rave?
The 1990s were a simpler time - at least in the realm of kid birthday parties. You went out for laser tag or group-watched a movie. You had slumber parties or rented the 'party room' at your local roller rink. However, sometime between then and now, Skrillex happened - which brings us to the latest trend in children's birthday parties - KIDDIE RAVES. Introducing CirKiz - it's like that neon EDM-packed post-apocalypse you used to go to in college. But with safer goodie bags. You got your wildin' out, glowstick-wielding white bros. Guy with a cool haircut working the 1's and 2's. The person who's been going hard on fruit punch all night. And the one in the corner, currently regretting the fruit punch. CirKiz was created by some NYC-based, EDM-loving parents - Jesse Sprague and Jenny Song - who wanted to create a special place "where families can listen and dance to DJs, see live performances, and experience a nightclub environment in a safe, controlled daytime setting." Available in both New York and London, parents can choose one of several popular warehouse venues and trendy nightclubs for their CirKiz-sponsored event. One such venue, I was surprised to learn, is Cielo, a New York spot known for hosting some pretty 'high-brow' house and trance DJs. In fact, that's exactly where Jesse and Jenny first came up with their Cirkiz idea: "We had [our son's] 1st birthday party at Cielo. We invited friends with kids and friends without. It was so much fun for everyone we decided to make it an annual event but in different clubs. The message we got from all our friends was clear and consistent: 'You should do this professionally and turn it into a business... I'd pay to go.' So after years of just doing it for fun, we finally got our act together and did exactly that." Currently, CirKiz is hosting a 'winter series' of raves at NYC's Space Ibiza on Sundays, where ticket prices range from $15 - 20 per person. You can check out more details at their official website or you can be like me and just stare at these pictures, feeling equal parts confused and disturbed. With that being said: What do you guys think? Is combining kids and rave culture a good idea or bad idea? Let me know in the comments below. (Also shout-out to the LED robot in this picture up here. For a part-time job, that's - admittedly - rad as hell.)
Viral Star "Damn Daniel" Meets Ellen
Daaaaaaaamn Daniel. If you haven't seen the viral video of the newly famed star "Damn Daniel" then you're probably living off the grid. With a hilarious voice coming from high school sophomore Josh Holz, he has been making hilarious vines of his friend, Daniel Lara. Daniel is only 14 years old and a freshman at Riverside Poly High School, CA. The young heart throb is now raking in thousands of fans across social media attracting super-fandom overnight. Hundreds of crazy rumors have flooded the web, everything from Daniel being attacked to he's in hiding. Everyone is just looking for a story to add to the media craze. There are currently a pair of white vans online selling for $300,000 hoping to get someone gullible enough to buy them. This quick rise to fame though hasn't come without consequences. A recent news article hit that fans are pranking and storming Holz's home in California to get a glimpse of the kid behind the voice. The vine has also led to some negative parodies online which have garnered some heat. Of course it was a given that "Damn Daniel" and the voice behind it would appear on The Ellen Show. After a hilarious interview between Ellen and the boys, she surprised them with gifts. For Holz, she gave him an epic and brand new surfboard to commemorate his visit to the show. However, Damn Daniel was the one who truly came home with a winning prize by receiving a lifetime supply of Vans shoes thanks to Ellen partnering with Vans HQ. Talk about an awesome gift! "Back at it again with the white vans!"
How To Survive Your Very First KCON, Advice From A KCON Veteran
For K-Pop fans here in the United States, KCON is hands down the biggest event of the year. It's not only an opportunity to meet up with fellow fangirls (and fanboys!) and make new friends, but it's pretty much a huge Hallyu party, complete with K-Food vendors, celebrity panelists, and - of course - live performances from some of the hottest idols of the year! With KCON finally branching out and coming to BOTH coasts this year, that means a whole lot of you are probably heading out to KCON for the very first time! As a self-described 'veteran KCON-er' myself, I've decided to throw together a fun survival guide for first-timers complete with some exclusive photos of KCON from past years! Dress Comfortably! When you're at the convention, you're going to be doing a whole lot of walking around. Make sure that you're not only staying hydrated (keep some cash handy for water), but you're wearing comfortable shoes and have something to hold all of that K-Pop swag you're going to end up collecting throughout the day. (There's a LOT of cool giveaways, which means a LOT of stuff to be lugging around!) Get Ready To Dance All Day! KCON is full of plenty of opportunities to get your K-Pop dance on. Not only can you join in on a flash mob, but there are also special events throughout the convention where fans can teach and learn the choreography to all their favorite K-Pop songs! Be Prepared For Some Epic Cosplay! Cosplay isn't just for anime conventions anymore! KCON is PACKED with people dressed up as their favorite idols and music video concepts. In past years, I've seen fans arrive dressed as anyone from 'Bar Bar Bar'-era Crayon Pop to 'Doom Dada' T.O.P himself! Ask The Panelists Questions Some Crazy Questions! The celebrity panels are one of my favorite parts of KCON, and it's because you get the chance to play interviewer and ask people whatever they want! In fact, here are some things I found out just by getting to ask different KCON panelists weird questions: John Major, the songwriter behind EXO's 'Growl', has a pretty surprising favorite K-Pop song: 'Turn It Up' by T.O.P of BIGBANG. Lydia Paek might help choreograph and compose some of YG Entertainment's hottest singles, but she's also a licensed pharmacist. When Josh (AKA YouTube celebrity The Korean Englishman) sings karaoke with his friends, his go-to track is 'Supermagic' by Supreme Team. When you get to KCON, review the program, pick out panelists you'd be interested in meeting, and think about what weird questions you'd like them to answer. It's a lot of fun! Impress Your KCON Bias With Your Korean Skills! Fan meetings are probably the most exciting part for many of the fans attending KCON. Depending on what type of ticket you buy, you can get a chance to meet your favorite idols - you might even score yourself a hi-touch or autograph! If you're selected to attend a fan meeting, make sure to get there early, and in the meantime, practice what you're going to say when you finally get to meet them! (Even if you're not an expert at Korean, they'll really be touched that you tried your best.) Want to learn some Korean phrases? Check out @kpopandkimchi's How To Talk To Your Oppa collection. Attend The 'Danny From LA' Live Taping! Danny Im from MNET's 'Danny From LA' shoots a special KCON episode every year on the main outdoor stage, which means that even if you don't gain entrance to your favorite group's fan meeting, you can be in the audience for their on-stage interview! 'Danny From LA' loves bringing fans on stage to meet their favorite idols or participate in some sort of game, so who knows? Maybe you'll even get to be on TV! Show Up Early To The Pre-Show Red Carpet! A couple hours before the concert starts, select fans will be able to attend the pre-show red carpet event, where all of the artists on the evening's line-up will come out to be interviewed by the media, greet the fans, and pose for the cameras - including yours! If you're selected, make sure to get there as early as possible so you get a good view. (Shout-outs to the guy in the red hat here that kept blocking mine!) Go Crazy At The Concert! Once you get to the part we've ALL been waiting for, make sure to scream as loud and as often as you possibly can. All KCON attendees are usually given some sort of lightstick, so make sure to shake it back and forth to support all of your favorites. And DANCE! Dance by yourself, dance with your friends, heck - dance with some strangers! Being at a K-Pop show means being surrounded by people that are just as obsessed as you are. (Believe me, you won't run out of things to talk about.) And, that's it! That's all of the advice I'd give to all of you Vinglers attending KCON this year. I hope you have an amazing time and enjoyed this card!
