One of the reasons why we all love fall fashion are the infinite possibilities for layering once the temperatures drop. Well, it's now September and fall weather still seems distant to say the least. I'm going to bide my time in the heat and look forward to the coming chill by thinking about one of my favorite layering pieces, the tunic. Here are my picks for this fall (and Winter), and they're all under $100!
Whether sleeveless or in a sweaterlike form, knit tunics are perfect for transitioning to colder weather, and chunkier styles are just dying to be layered over leather leggings for a sleek but comfy look. This River Island knit tunic from ASOS will bring your favorite skinny jeans to a more wintery place, and when the temperatures drop, will look great layered over a tissue tee. This sweatervest-like tunic from Nastygal might look silly worn alone, but will layer seamlessly over anything and everything. If you're looking for a knit tunic with sleeves, this ribbed tunic from Topshop has a body-hugging fit and little side-slits to make the sweater far from matronly.
Mock necks and turtlenecks are all the rage, and sleeveless mock neck tunics are an interesting mix of modest and bare when worn without sleeves. This knit tunic from Zara has a modest mock neck for an overall simple and sophisticated look, but daring side slits to keep things interesting. This one from ASOS has a full roll turtleneck to really embrace the trend, but deep arm holes let you still show some skin. This roll neck tunic top from Topshop is much more delicate, with an unexpected keyhole to play with cover and reveal.
A sheer or semi-sheer tunic is great because it invites more layering by requiring layers underneath! Whether simple or printed, sheer tunics look great over thick leggings and layered over tops or bralettes for a sexier feel. This paisley tunic dress from Zara is long enough to be a dress, but the sheerness makes it a layering piece that will elevate your typical dress and tights look. This mesh-paneled tunic from Forever 21 is almost opaque, but the hints of sheerness will either layer over a pretty bralette for a delicate look or over another dress for an edgy coolness. This leopard tunic from Zara delivers sass with the fun print but has a high neck and long cut to counter the sheerness.
Tunic dresses are great because of their versatility, wear them alone for a sexier look, or over shorts in the summer that just barely peak out below, or over leggings or tights come fall. This red tunic dress from Topshop has a bit of seventies flair with the tie-neck. This lace-up dress from Nastygal can be worn alone, but the super-short hem is begging to be layered with tights and knee-high boots. This tunic dress from H&M has the cutest color and print, but the mustard yellow is totally fall-appropriate rather than summery.
