MLB Top Plays of the Day (09/10/15)

Here are your Top 5 Plays of the Day!

5. Eugenio Suarez (Cincinnati Reds)

That was a pretty deep slide into second base but Suarez made that play look so easy! Brandon Phillips also showed some solid defense last night. The Reds' keystone combination were just on a roll last night defensively. The Reds crushed the Cardinals 11-0.

4. Wilmer Flores (New York Mets)

What a dive from Flores! That catch helped the Mets' starting pitcher Bartolo Colon extend his consecutive scoreless innings. Unfortunately, the streak stopped at 31 but the Mets beat the Braves 7-2 and Colon collected his 14th win of the season.

3. Martin Maldonado (Milwaukee Brewers)

I don't know what's up with the Pirates when they meet the Brewers and what was Cervelli doing? He isn't even that fast! Anyways, great throw by Maldonado and the Brewers beat the Pirates 6-4. The Pirates have now lost seven consecutive games against the Brewers.

2. Yangervis Solarte (San Diego Padres)

I was a bit surprised when I heard the Yankees traded Solarte to the Padres. He's been doing pretty well with the Padres considering the fact he made his Major League debut last year. But yes...I love these barehand catches by third basemen. Despite Solarte's barehand and cannon to first, the Padres fell to the Rockies 4-3.

1. Charlie Blackmon (Colorado Rockies)

The number one play of the day today and another one from the Rockies - Padres matchup. Charlie Blackmon simply snagged that homer from Brett Wallace who came in to pinch hit in the bottom of the ninth. What a clutch performance by Blackmon and this catch I feel like was the deciding factor in the Rockies' victory over the Padres!
Now that was your Top 5 Plays of the Day from last night's games!

@jeff4122 Yeah...I don't know what Cervelli was thinking......anyways good thing the Bucs beat the Brewers tonight and ended their losing streak against the Brewers! Also the Cardinals lost tonight too.....NL Central is so fun to watch this year esp because the Cubs have stepped up their game so much haha. @christianmordi wouldn't you agree?
@ljk901023 haha I knew you'd like the Blackmon play! That play def saved the Rockies last night haha
Whoa!! got to give it to Blackmon for sure - what a catch! Maldonado's play is pretty crazy too - i can't imagine how he pops up that quickly to make the throw

A letter to the Mets' owners
Dear Fred and Jeff Wilpon, Please resign Yoenis Cespedes. This shouldn't be too much to ask. The team's payroll is currently somewhere just above $100,000,000. And I know that seems like a lot. Honestly speaking, it is. But relatively speaking, it isn't very much at all. It should be higher. This is a big team in a big market coming off a big year. Spend some money. Please, we're begging you. You made a great move last year by bringing Cespedes in right before the trade deadline. You restored faith in a franchise whose fans needed some love. We have been through a lot in the past decade (and before then, too), and you gave us some indication that you were ready to help this team win. And guess what? It almost paid off. Cespedes turned into a superstar and a fan favorite overnight and turned the Mets from an average team into a potentially great one. With the pitching that this team has in place for the next few years, it won't take that much to push them over the edge and make them legit World Series candidates. But we need a hitter. Bad. Cespedes is that guy. You don't have to sign him to a massive deal of 6 years for $150 million. I understand your hesitation there - he's aging, and can make some silly mistakes in the field. But 2 years for $50-60 million should not be too much to ask. Not for this team. Not in this market. Not with this kind of potential. You see, without Cespedes, the Mets are somewhere on the outside of the top 10 teams in the league, even with their pitching. Without Cespedes, they are a much worse team than the one that made the World Series last year. Without Cespedes, the aging David Wright and the second-year Michael Conforto will be relied on for too much. Without Cespedes, there is a gaping hole in the middle of this lineup. With Cespedes, though, this team is among the league's best. No question about it. He's still on the market, and we should have signed him a long time ago. But there is still time to make amends. You can still take advantage of the strange free agent market right now and make Cespedes the offer that he wants - rumors have it that he wants to be back in New York - and turn these Mets into not only a team that we love, but a team that we believe in. Give us something to believe in. We've waited long enough, and we know how good this team can be. Let's make it happen. Signed, A Hopeful Mets fan
The 5 Strangest Superstition in Sports!
Hello sports fans! It's Friday the 13th! Here are some of the strangest superstitions in sports! Michael Jordan Michael always wore his UNC shorts under his NBA shorts. Thus, he wore longer shorts than his fellow players at that time. In the end however, his fellow players followed suit after the legend. Serena Williams Serena Williams is known for not changing socks once during a tournament. It sucks to wear a pair of socks for more than a day...imagine how it would feel to wear the same socks for an entire tournament! I guess Serena doesn't mind it considering the number of tournaments she has won. Brian Ulracher Brian Ulracher ate two chocolate chip cookies before every game. Maybe that was the secret to his muscular body. I think it'd be fair to call him the "Cookie Monster". Caron Butler Caron Butler was known to be an avid fan of Mountain Dew. He loved the drink so much that he drank before and during every game. During his UNC days, he asked his wife to pick him a 2-L bottle of the green stuff, and drank half of it before the game, and the rest during half-time. In 2007, the Wizards and NBA banned him from drinking it during games so he eventually quit the whole thing in 2009. Moises Alou This one has to be the most f*cked up one out of all of them. Moises Alou used to pee on his own hands to harden them! Should we see that as commitment to the game of baseball or just some pretty weird ass shit? Oh and by the way, don't try to harden your hands by peeing on them ladies and gentlemen, because doctors have confirmed that peeing on your hand doesn't harden them. It actually softens them. @jeff4122 @ButterflyBlu @superiorsl @Starbell808 @DonnaMelton @InPlainSight @jokes @BEAUTYgirlARIEL @David19Flo23 @karencorchado @salahabdalla @Moose892 @BrookieyElba @SamuelRodriguez @ValerieAlissaPa @xitlalicordova1 @AndrewMaldonado @Jovi @Shippudenguy21 @AbdulrahmanSaad @trinityarcangel @thefeels @Link4TW @ChriSingularis @sanazsanaz @WilliamBrown @DannyMoses @ClaySharko @Ravenwing92 @FromBlue2U @TravisBeck @LemissaNicole @BossDominata @gatorchick96 @MatthewBoughton @MarcusJiles @BrandonMcNeil @MalikLawary @KyleBerke @manbungo2000 @DerekGumtow @havic @Straightshooter @PhilAnthony @Kirooken @yaakattackk @RodneyYoung @DreJones @JonathanKerns @bnzattoni @TravisManning @GalacticChakra @smothgreen @afxs @johnnolastname @ChristopherKenn @ChasePage @coreywriley91@MikeWolf @MrTenThirty @JasonNilsson @BrunoDutch @SherzTYC @krishntejanand @addri @ChrisStephens What was your favorite one from the list? Harvey misses team practice, "I screwed up"
The Mets are made the playoffs for the first time in nine years. Tickets are already sold out and Queens is getting ready to welcome back playoff baseball. But they are not off to a great start. Yesterday, Mets ace Matt Harvey missed a mandatory team workout at Citi Field. His excuse? TRAFFIC! Manager Terry Collins said Harvey will be fined for missing mandatory team practice. But he said Harvey will not miss any games and went on to say, "This is minor. This isn't college, where he's going to miss the first quarter of a football game. I'm going to take care of it in-house. I deal with it one way. The players deal with it another way. He's going to get fined. It's no big deal. He's going to continue to pitch. He f----- up. People do that. He feels bad. The players will take care of it on their own. We don't need it. We need to try to stay as positive as we can." Harvey also apologize for his actions and said, "Basically, there's no excuse. I screwed up. I wasn't here. I showed up a little late." The Mets and Harvey haven't been getting along too well especially after the stint they had with Scott Boras, his agent, last month when Boras requested they don't have Harvey pitch more than 180 innings. Personally, I don't really give a damm whether Harvey was stuck in traffic or not. I don't care what he was doing before that. Baseball is a team sport. And if you have a mandatory team practice, you should not miss it under any circumstances, especially if you are the ace and center of that team that is contending in the postseason for the first time in nine years! I am really interested to hear what @jeff4122 has to say. Are you going to defend your best pitcher for missing "mandatory team practice"?
MLB Top 5 Plays of the Day (10/03/15)
Here are your Top 5 Plays of the Day! 5. DJ Lemahieu (Colorado Rockies) What a diving stop by DJ Lemaihieu! He not only stopped the ball, he threw it on his knees to get the out at first. The Rockies however fell to the Giants 3-2. Nice job DJ! 4. Alexi Amarista (San Diego Padres) That was a great diving catch by the little ninja, Alexi Amarista, as he makes an incredible diving catch. That play robbed Gonzalez's potential double to end the inning. The Padres fell to the Dodgers however, 2-1. 3. Kelby Tomlinson (San Francisco Giants) It was a popup to shallow right and it seemed like it was going to be a lucky base hit. And Tomlinson had a hard time finding the ball and that was understandable as he was going for an overhead catch. He however found the ball while running, and caught the ball to get the out. The Giants beat the Rockies 3-2. 2. George Springer (Houston Astros) The ball was hit deep right, but Springer was there to make the diving catch. If that ball went by, it was easily extra bases. Thus, it was simply an enormous play by Springer to keep the Astros in lead. The Astros beat the Diamondbacks 6-2. 1. Carlos Perez & Erick Aybar (Los Angeles Angels) The Rangers needed one more win to clinch the division title, but the Angels were not going to give up that easily, especially because the Angels are one game behind the Astros for that last Wild Card spot. They were down 10-6 but showed once again that the game ain't over till it's over. The Angels scored five runs in the top of the ninth to turn the game around, 11-10. And, with that throw by Perez, Aybar tagged Andrus and got him out to end the game to add another win to their season as they inch closer to that Wild Card spot. Now that was your Top 5 Plays of the Day from last night's games! The Woman Who Struck Out Babe Ruth
And Lou Gehrig too. On April 2, 1931 the seventeen year-old Jackie Mitchell struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig back-to-back. They were arguably the deadliest hitting duo in baseball history, and she did it in only seven pitches. Which is pretty damn impressive. Less impressive is what happened afterwards. "They are too delicate. It would kill them to play ball every day." Ruth wasn't the most gracious in defeat (via), and some historians have dismissed the exhibition game as an April Fool's Prank. It's unlikely that Ruth would have been visibly upset if he struck out on purpose, nor would he have asked the umpire to inspect the ball. And a few days later, Mitchell's contract was voided on the basis that baseball was "too strenuous" for women. Yeah, beating some of the most famous players of all time sounds really strenuous. What if she broke a nail?! /sarcasm She kept playing anyway. So clearly the game wasn't TOO strenuous (she died in 1987 at the age of 74). She joined the amateur team House of David in 1933, and retired in 1937. Meanwhile, women weren't formally banned from the MLB until 1952, though unofficially they were often kept off the field. Such was the case for Eleanor Engle, who never took the field. The President of the minor leagues stated that no contract with a woman would be approved because “not in the best interest of baseball that such travesties be tolerated.” In the 1970s girls were allowed to join Little League, in the 80s women joined college baseball, and in the 1990s, Ila Borders joined the St. Paul Saints of the independent Northern League. But no female player has reached the majors (yet). But the 100-year anniversary of the time a teenage girl struck out some of the toughest hitters in baseball history. Maybe it'll happen again in 2031?
MLB Top Plays of the Day (09/24/15)
Here are your Top 5 Plays of the Day! 5. Cody Anderson (Cleveland Indians) We saw something similar a few days ago with David Price. Well, he's not the only one in the Major Leagues with monster reflexes. Cody Anderson of the Cleveland Indians wasn't even thinking when he lowered his glove. And the next second, the ball was sitting right there in his glove. The Tribe beats the Twins 6-3. 4. Chase Headley (New York Yankees) The ball was hit hard to third, but Chase Headley wasn't going to let it get passed by him. He dived to stop the ball and got up quickly to fire the ball from foul territory all the way to first to get the out. He robbed a hit from Abreu for sure and possibly one or two RBIs. The Yankees inch past the White Sox 3-2. 3. Nolan Arenado (Colorado Rockies) It was a tough ball for Nolan Arenado. But we know we have seen plenty of great plays from the Rockies third baseman. Arenado grabs it barehand and throws a rocket to first to get the out. This play made his case for a Gold Glove a lot stronger. The Pirates however beat the Rockies 5-4. 2. Marcell Ozuna (Miami Marlins) The ball was hit right center and Marcell Ozuna knew exactly where the ball was going. He did not hesitate one bit and timed his slide perfectly to make it to the second spot on the Top Plays list. With a very strong defense game, the Marlins beat the Phillies 1-0. 1. Miguel Rojas (Miami Marlins) Yes, the Miami defense game was on point tonight and the best play of the night goes to another Miami Marlin, Miguel Rojas. It sure looked like it was going to be a base hit up the middle, but Rojas dived, got on his feet, and fired one to first to get the out. And with great defensive plays from Rojas and Ozuna, the Marlins beat the Phillies, 1-0. Now that was your Top 5 Plays of the Day from last night's games! It's playoff time! Who's excited? I know I am - and I bet my fellow baseball fans are too! @mchlyang @christianmordi @ButterflyBlu @superiorsl !! Let's take a look at the Wild Card and NLDS schedule. It all gets started this Tuesday at 8PM ET as Houston travels to the Bronx to face the Yankees. In the NL Wild Card, the Cubs face the Pirates in Pittsburgh at 8PM ET on Wednesday. This game also features a likely Cy Young winner, as Jake Arrieta will look to continue his masterful second half and knock out the Cubs' division rivals. Love It Or Hate It: Live Sporting Events?
Welcome to the Funny Community game, Love It Or Hate It! This game is really similar to Monday's 'No Good or So Good' food game - except this one deals a lot more with non-food things. Every week, I highlight a different thing that a lot of people either really love or really hate and see how our community feels overall! Last week, I asked you how you felt about SELFIE STICKS. It was an EXTREMELY tight vote, but out of the 60 who gave your opinion, 33 of you said that they're actually kind of useful! Soooo... SELFIE STICKS WIN!!!! This week, I want to know: How do you feel about attending live sports games? Spectator sports have been around since the days of Ancient Greece, but the ones we know and love today came into being in the mid 19th century! The number of Americans that attend at least one live sporting event annually is easily in the tens of millions. However, the amount of them that find said sporting event COMPLETELY BORING is still widely unknown. How do YOU feel about spectator sports? Are they tons of fun or brutally boring?
