Hangul 101: Basic Vowels

Welcome to Hangul 101!

The alphabet is your key to studying even more Korean, and it's pretty easy to pick up with a little practice!
Today's lesson is: BASIC VOWELS
Just 8 little symbols for you to remember!

Easy enough, right!?

Let's start off with this guy ---> ㅇ

It's called an '이응/ee-eung' and is one of the most important letters because it is used so often.
It has a double pronunciation so its a little tricky:
In the beginning of a character (like 안, 아, 오, 역) it has no sound!
At the end of a character (like 빵, 강, 등) it has a 'ng' sound. (Take the word 'sing' now say it without the 'si,' just 'ng' :D

Since you can't just write a vowel by itself, I'm going to put a ㅇ in front of each vowel - but since it's at the beginning it is silent!

A!

Ahhh like awesome! You learned your first vowel!

Try writing it a few times or tracing it with your fingers.
아! 아아!! 아아아 :D

Here it is with other letters - can you still find the 'ㅏ' symbol?
밥, 강, 모자, 자전거, 안녕, 사랑해 (it's in there twice!)
Words you see it in: 아이유 (IU), 아빠 (Daddy), 여자 (woman), 한국 (Korea)

Hi kpopandkimchi. I am so happy that you shared this card. I always wanted to learn the Korean language and write it as well. I have been trying to teach myself and it is not working out all that well. I have books and cds but it is hard when you are doing it alone. Thank you for explaining it in this card. I will most definitely follow this card. Have an awesome day.
