Coates described it as a "childhood dream."
Since Marvel is releasing a Black Panther film in 2018 (the character will be appearing in Civil War next year), it's no surprise that they're trying to gain some momentum for the comics. As the first black hero to get his own film in the MCU (Blade's film rights were owned by a different company), this is a really significant character right now. Which is why it's amazing news that Ta-Nehisi Coates will be writing the comic! (Via).
"The reality of Coates writing a black superhero is a gigantic step in an industry where female and non-white creators are still a minority fighting for their voices to be heard."
The Marvel community been talking this week about the lack of diversity in comics, and behind the scenes it sounds like the situation is pretty dire. While this doesn't seem like a solution to some of the institutional problems we've been discussing, it does feel like a step in the right direction!
Ta-Nehisi Coates is a perfect fit.
He's an incredibly talented writer, a correspondent for The Atlantic, the author of Between the World and Me, and a National Book Award Nominee. He's thoughtful, sensitive, and passionate about comics. He is absolutely the right person to be taking on this important project.
The comics will be released next year! Who else is going to check them out?
