3 Movies About Music that Get it Right
If there's one thing I like about movies, it's the way that they try and blend genres into one cohesive piece. And my absolute favorite example of this is when movies tackle the subject of music. The musician's journey is one that most of us (hopefully I'm not the only one) have fantasized about at least once in our lives.
The following three movies are ones that I hold close to my heart and really give the audience a sense of what it might be like if they want to pursue a music career themselves. Now, none of these are any of those musical biopics (that's a totally different card, which will probably end up happening soon) but they all have some merit in their own right.

That Thing You Do!

I can still remember the first time I watched That Thing You Do! I was probably around 8 or 9 years old and it was on VH1. My mom had asked me to watch it with her, so as a good little boy, I did. And from that moment on, I remember how I'd listen to the soundtrack every couple of months until I eventually lost it. The great thing about this movie is that it shows how quick or how short one's stardom could last. None of these characters are really, well, all that great except for Guy but I really like how the movie shows the band go on that journey of being a one-hit wonder to nothing at all.

School of Rock

I saw School of Rock in the theater and promptly picked it up on DVD as soon as it was released. I really enjoyed the way music enriched the class's lives and I desperately wanted to be a part of something like that. Where That Thing You Do! is a movie about hitting big on one of the grandest scales, School of Rock shows us how music (and playing music) can positively change young minds. The characters may not become rich and famous but they do experience the power of music and that's enough for me.

Inside Llewyn Davis

If That Thing You Do! is about quick fame and fortune and School of Rock is about the way music can positively affect your life, then Inside Llewyn Davis is about the complete opposite of both of those things. The titular character Llewyn Davis is a singer/songwriter that doesn't really get any respect as a musician. And he spends the whole movie trying to get that "big break" and it never happens for him. It's a more realistic portrayal of what it might be like for someone new trying to make it into music.
