It looks like Watchmen (the comic book then the Zack Snyder adaptation) might be getting an HBO series. While nothing has been set in stone and "no deals have been made", Deadline recently reported that the preliminary discussions have taken place.
This can literally mean anything. But like many of us nerdfolk like to do, I want to speculate on what a Watchmen TV Series would actually be like. I want to believe that it won't rehash the story told by Zack Snyder (an adaptation I actually loved, especially the super-extended-directors-ultimate edition that's almost four hours long) because there's a lot of lore that has yet to be explored.
There's a bunch of stories that could be adapted from 2012's Before Watchmen series. Which acts as a prequel to the original 1986 run of comics. If they went this route, it would be an interesting way to tie-in to the movie, especially if they have certain actors reprise their roles (I doubt that would happen though but a little pixelated boy can dream). I really loved tone the movie had set and I think this would be one of the better ways to follow that trend.
Another idea is to go deep into the past and have the series revolve around the Minutemen. My memory isn't as good as it used to be so I'm not sure if the movie or the comics got detailed with how they started and who the heroes were but either way, it'd be nice to see some of these stories. They'd come off as new and allow whoever is writing it the freedom to create new storylines.
I know we probably won't hear much about the Watchmen TV series for a while but I absolutely love wondering what might happen and what could be when it comes to visual adaptations of comic books.
