The story revolves around Mahiro Fuwa, a teenager whose family was mysteriously murdered one year before and his friend Yoshino Takigawa. Mahiro is contacted by Hakase Kusaribe, the leader of the Kusaribe clan who was left stranded on an unknown desert island by her followers, and agrees to help Hakase in exchange of her help to find out the culprit for the death of his family. Upon learning of his friend's intentions, Yoshino joins him on his quest to stand against the Kusaribe clan who intends to awake the "Tree of Zetsuen" whose power can bring ruin to the entire world.
Several dialogues and plot elements in Zetsuen no Tempest pay homage to the works of William Shakespeare.
This is a psychological/Magical Anime with one of the most intriguing story I've seen in quite a while. I couldn't stop watching just because of how curious I was to know the progression of the story. It makes you think a lot, and I love animes that make me ponder about it so much that I cant think of anything else. It's an hidden gem that doesn't get the praise it deserves.
Each character has their own type of personalities. Mahiro is this smart rebel whos vision is clouded by revenge for the killer of his family, (I won't spoil who). Yoshino is Mahiros best friend who is also very smart but he's the calm type who thinks before acting. And there's Hakaze who's the most powerful mage in the anime. The story is great thanks to these three, and the supporting characters do an amazing job to make it even better.
The Plot in general, I can't stress this enough but besides the action packed moments, the plot is one of the most unique ones out there. There are two different types of "Magical Powers" in the anime, both receiving their powers from different sources and also different uses, strengths and weaknesses. The animation is also amazing when it wants to be! It seems so pure an elegant sometimes. Lastly, as it's said in the description, it quotes Shakespeare a lot.
Both opening songs are just excellent. The first one is actually in English, but (personal opinion) it felt like those late 90s punk rock bands, but it still captures that anime feeling quite well. The second opening is the better one, with elegant vocals, classical + rock music, making it feel more like "home" (our anime fandom). The endings are just relaxing, it just make you to forget everything that's happening and enjoy the moment.
I enjoyed this one more than I should have. Really one of those hidden gems out there, really worth watching more than once.
Hope You Enjoy!~
