"I can only conclude that I'm paying off karma at a vastly accelerated rate."
Susan Ivanova (Babylon 5) was one of the greatest female characters ever created for a science fiction show. She was a pit bull with a tender heart. When she was pissed, everyone steered clear of her, because they knew heads were about to roll. But she could also be incredibly compassionate and sympathetic.
When I was younger, I identified with Delenn's personality, but wanted to be like Susan Ivanova. Delenn could make her presence known when she wanted to, but Ivanova was WAS a presence and was always in control. She had an extraordinary talent for finding creative solutions to any problems, disputes, obstacles, uprisings, and battles.
But she an enormous heart. She was sensitive and had a loving side, but years of heartache and woe led to closing herself off from love. She didn't "need" love, but when she lost what she never acknowledged she had, she felt the loss in such a profound way.
Looking back at clips from Babylon 5, I realize just how fleshed out this character was. She wasn't just a supporting role, she was a human role, with strengths and flaws and dreams and personality.
"And just one more thing. On your way back, I'd like you to take the time to learn the Babylon 5 mantra: 'Ivanova is always right. I will listen to Ivanova. I will not ignore Ivanova's recommendations. Ivanova is God. And, if this ever happens again, Ivanova will personallyrip your lungs out! Babylon control out."
