Trevor Cahill is no longer the Trevor Cahill we knew back in his Oakland A's days.
But he was near perfect when he was called up to pitch in the eighth inning of Game 3 of the NLDS between the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals.
Cahill pitched 0.2 innings, eight pitches, and striking both batters out.

But something else, other than his stellar performance, caught people's attention.

The Chicago Cubs pitcher was wearing LA Dodgers socks.

So what is going on here?

And Lou Gehrig too. On April 2, 1931 the seventeen year-old Jackie Mitchell struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig back-to-back. They were arguably the deadliest hitting duo in baseball history, and she did it in only seven pitches. Which is pretty damn impressive. Less impressive is what happened afterwards. "They are too delicate. It would kill them to play ball every day." Ruth wasn't the most gracious in defeat (via), and some historians have dismissed the exhibition game as an April Fool's Prank. It's unlikely that Ruth would have been visibly upset if he struck out on purpose, nor would he have asked the umpire to inspect the ball. And a few days later, Mitchell's contract was voided on the basis that baseball was "too strenuous" for women. Yeah, beating some of the most famous players of all time sounds really strenuous. What if she broke a nail?! /sarcasm She kept playing anyway. So clearly the game wasn't TOO strenuous (she died in 1987 at the age of 74). She joined the amateur team House of David in 1933, and retired in 1937. Meanwhile, women weren't formally banned from the MLB until 1952, though unofficially they were often kept off the field. Such was the case for Eleanor Engle, who never took the field. The President of the minor leagues stated that no contract with a woman would be approved because “not in the best interest of baseball that such travesties be tolerated.” In the 1970s girls were allowed to join Little League, in the 80s women joined college baseball, and in the 1990s, Ila Borders joined the St. Paul Saints of the independent Northern League. But no female player has reached the majors (yet). But the 100-year anniversary of the time a teenage girl struck out some of the toughest hitters in baseball history. Maybe it'll happen again in 2031?
Bachelor Party Nightmare
Party for one... Could you imagine attending a bachelor party where no one showed up because their flights were cancelled? Well, that happened to poor guy, Robbie Chernow. This New Yorker was thrilled to celebrate in the Windy City with his friend and groom-to-be, Jake Katz. However, there was a plot twist. The rest of the wedding party coming from NYC was flying Delta and their flight was cancelled causing a few problems. So when everyone doesn't show up, what do you do? You Instagram every moment. Chernow didn't let the horrible news ruin his trip so he decided to still take in the sights of the city. He went to a Chicago Bears Game, Wrigley Field, Navy Pier, and The Bean. He enjoyed the famous eatery Portillo's alone while also going out of his way to meet native Chicagoans. Each post was progressively more comical than the first one and it was impossible not to feel bad for the guy. So far Chernow has gained 14,000 followers on Instagram just this past weekend. He's also been written in every major publication in print and online across the country. He's having his 15 minutes of fame and making every minute of it. You gotta wonder how the groom-to-be feels...embarrassed I'd say. ChicagoOh....I'm alone. Will you take my picture? Yeah it's a long story... Do you think he made the best of his situation?
Joe Maddon wins Manager of the Year
Not that this is terribly surprising, but it's newsworthy all the same: Joe Maddon is the National League's Manager of the Year. The Cubs went 97-65 this season, a year after going just 73-89. They made the playoffs via the Wild Card and progressed to the NLCS, where they were eventually swept by the Mets in four games. Maddon's presence with the team certainly went a long, long way to turning things around for one of the league's most troubled franchises. It's not all about Maddon, though - this Cubs team was nothing like the 2014 edition. The emergence of young future (and even present) superstars like Kris Bryant and Kyle Schwarber turned this team on its head. The youngsters, combined with amazing seasons by Anthony Rizzo and pitcher Jake Arrieta made the Cubs one of the most feared teams in the National League. Many had them picked to win the World Series before they ran into the piping-hot Mets in the NLCS. They met an unstoppable force and couldn't pull it off, but had a great season nonetheless. In a somewhat surprising move, the Mets' Terry Collins finished third in Manager of the Year voting behind Maddon and Mike Matheny of the Cardinals. Sure, the Cardinals finished with the best record in baseball, but if you ask me, what Collins did as manager was more impressive than Matheny's work. The Mets' head honcho took a minor league roster and guided them through a brutal first half of the season before picking up some huge mid-season acquisitions and turning on the style late in the season, reaching the World Series before falling to the Royals. Sure, none of this actually matters, and I think most people pretty much agreed that Maddon would win Manager of the Year. Many probably picked Collins to finish second ahead of Matheny, but that's just making an argument for no reason. So, there we have it baseball fans: Maddon, Matheny, Collins. Is this the right order? I'm Ashamed of My Hometown
San Diego, get your shit together. Each year at the Padres stadium, Petco Park, the LGBT society in SD holds an event called "Out at the Park" that is meant to bring the community together for an evening of baseball. This year, Petco Park really, really screwed up. The San Diego Men's Gay Chorus was meant to sing the national anthem before the game to represent the LGBT community for this event. Their voices were never heard. The stadium let them take the field, and then as they were about to sing, a recorded female voice instead sang the anthem (which, if you've been to a Padres game, isn't something that happens - we always have live singing) The men had to walk off the field hearing people shouting profane, homophobic things at them. The Padres said it was a mistake, a technical error, a third party contractor, and that they were sorry. But that doesn't explain the other examples of mistreatment. Days prior to the game, the Padres organization told the performers that the chorus would have to pay for their tickets in order to sing. This is not something that happens, ever. If you perform the national anthem, you get to enter the park for free, DUH. Why did the Padres suddenly want this now? That would have cost the small organization thousands of dollars, and after dispute they were finally allowed in as performers. You can listen to their great voices here when they performed in 2015. It's a pity their voices weren't heard this year. Get it together Padres, you're a disappointment in baseball but don't be a disappointment to your entire community.

During last night's game between the Chicago Cubs and the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field, Anthony Rizzo made one of the most amazing catches in baseball history! In the top of the sixth inning, Brewers' Ryan Braun hit a high foul ball and at first, it seemed as if the ball was going into the stands. However, Rizzo leaped onto the tarp, balanced himself, and made the catch leaning into the stands. And of course, he fell into the stands afterwards. It was initially ruled a foul ball but the umpires got together to review the play and ruled Braun out. Here is a full video of Rizzo's amazing play!

Cuban Baseball Player Sleeps Outside Dodger Stadium For A Tryout
Noah Linares is from La Habana, Cuba and he is sleeping outside of The Dodgers stadium. He's waiting for the chance to try out for the team. Linares has been playing baseball since he was 8 years old. He's determined to get a chance with The Dodgers. For about three weeks, he has been sleeping on the streets. He is doing this for as long as it takes until he's given a chance to prove he has what it takes. 'If I didn't know how great a baseball player I know I am, I wouldn't be here trying to show off my skills to somebody." (ABC7) His determination is admirable. Although he has been sleeping on the street outside of the stadium, he is still keeping up with his workout regime. He's keeping active with bodyweight workouts. Also, people have helped him by offering food and water. "My Name is Loah Linares and I am Waiting For The Dodgers" I'm cheering for you Loah Linares -- now kick butt!

During his UNC days, he asked his wife to pick him a 2-L bottle of the green stuff, and drank half of it before the game, and the rest during half-time.
