The film Jane Got a Gun was never really on my radar. I mean, at all. Before today, I didn't even know it existed. But, there's a part of me that really, really wants to see it. Also, I'm usually onboard for anything that Natalie Portman is involved in. But there's another part of me that this movie won't be as good as the trailer is trying to make it seem.
The film follows your standard Western formula. Bad guys (Ewan McGregor) come into town and then our protagonists, Portman and Joel Edgarton have to thwart them... or something. But! Instead of taking a more passive role, it looks like Portman's character is taking a more active one. And I think that's the main reason why I want to watch this movie. Just to see more women shooting dudes (I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing).
And even though a part of me still really wants to see this movie, there is still something a little off about it. Part of it is that it's the way the trailer is cut. It looks like a movie that should've hit theaters years ago (which it should have, it went through a lot of pre-production issues).
Another issue I have with it is the way that it was shot. I mean, one of the most powerful moments in the trailer (above) is so dark, it seems like you'd only be able to make out what's happening on screen if you were in the theater watching the film or if you, like me, are sitting with your computer on your lap and a giant blanket over your head like a giant loser.
This one gives me a lot of mixed feelings, honestly, but I think I'd still try to give it a shot anyway. I'm a huge fan of Portman's work and the cast is rounded out nicely with McGregor and Edgarton, so I at least know that the performances will be top-notch.
Jane Got a Gun will be in theaters in France on November 25th and it will come to the States sometime in February 2016.
