Mascara is like that one friend we love to hate.

Like any friendship, we have our moments. We have our ups and downs, but in the end we always come out smiling. They may poke us in the eye, stick to our lids and run throughout the day, but we can't seem to get enough. Don't worry, I was talking about the mascara that time. As much as we can't stand mascara at times, it definitely comes through in times of needs making our lashes go from 0 to 100 real quick.
Although it may every woman's favorite beauty product and we feel like we have the relationship down pat, like any relationship there's always still more to learn. You may think you know, but you have no idea the ever so common mistakes you're making when applying your mascara. No worries. There may not be an app for that, but these mistakes are extremely avoidable and to find out what they happen to be -- keep scrolling.

Even beauty products have expiration dates.

Don't continue using a mascara that you've had for months on end. If you can't recall when you purchased it, it's time to get yourself a new tube [see card on expiration dates here].

Excessive pumping of the wand.

The more air you allow into your tube the more likely your mascara will clump.

Elongate your lashes from the roots.

If you're not applying your mascara properly than it's pointless. "If you don't get mascara at the roots, your lashes look shorter than they are," says makeup artist Diane Kendal.

Layers upon layers of mascara.

We get it, you want thick lashes. We all do, but piling on several layers will just leave your lashes a clumpy mess. The maximum layers for the majority of mascaras is no more than two. "The more you put on, the more likely it will dry mid-application," says makeup artist Kate Lee.

Using a heavy hand to apply your mascara.

When applying your mascara use a light hand or else you will end up with mascara smudged all over your lids. Not cute. When this happens use a q-tip to remove it.

Follow these simple tips and your lashes will forever be fleeky.
