David Goyer interview: Da Vinci’s Demons season 3, cancellation

As the third and final season of Da Vinci’s Demons lands, we chat to creator David Goyer about cancellation, DC movies, and a revival… Warning: contains spoilers for Da Vinci's Demons season two. Da Vinci's Demons, a fantasy historical with a gleefully revisionist take on the life of Leonardo Da Vinci, played by Tom Riley, is primed to air its third and final season on Starz in the US and FOX in the UK. To mark the occasion, we chatted to its creator and original showrunner, David Goyer, about its cancellation, the plans laid for its revival, and his work on the films of the DC universe...
So, Da Vinci’s Demons season two left us with another major cliff-hanger. The Turks are coming and Leonardo’s just discovered his mother, presumably the season three opener will throw us right into the action? Literally. In fact, it even backs up about five minutes and then catches up to where we were, which is sort of what we did in season one. With the explosion? Exactly. And what kind of timeframe are we looking at for the whole season, start to end? It’s pretty fast, it all unravels in about maybe a month’s time, which is a little bit different from the first two seasons. It’s all wrapped about the Siege Of Otranto, which is this real event that happened when the Ottoman Empire invaded Italy. So that siege takes place over multiple episodes? It goes over the whole season. Right! So you’re definitely not going to get to the Bonfire of the Vanities or Michelangelo then? No. No. Which is something that I wanted to do. There was a lot of discussion about whether to continue the show or not and let me just say that the show has a definitive end that I think will be very satisfying, that was designed. Some of the stuff that happens at the end of this season were scenes that I was always going to do and I moved forward. We definitely had an idea for another season but it takes place during the Bonfire of the Vanities, so even if we’d done another season, we would have jumped forward fifteen years. It’s not impossible that we may at one point do another limited series or something like that, at least three or four years from now. We’ll see. In some ways it might work better because the actors will have aged a bit more. Would that still be with Starz if it happened? Yes. Probably yes. They know the idea, they’re interested in the idea but it specifically has to do with the Bonfire of the Vanities and Savanarola and Michelangelo and some other stuff and it would have been impossible to cram that all into this season.
So the door’s not firmly closed? No. Someone else was asking about why it ended and it’s not always a clean question of commerce. I think the main reason was… well, there were three reasons. The show is incredibly complicated to produce, much more so than a lot of shows and I think aside from Game Of Thrones, it probably takes more days to shoot an episode than any other show that’s out there. It takes like sixteen days an episode. That’s like two Walking Deads. Yeah, exactly. The visual effects are incredible time-consuming, and to be honest, the visual effects for this season, which are spectacular, are really time-consuming and took a lot longer than we anticipated. So that was one reason, the other reason was that we shot in Wales and I’ve got three young kids and it was a long, long commute. It was really hard on me and my family. I just couldn’t physically do it, at least immediately. So we said, why don’t we end it now and maybe, if there’s a demand for it, we’ll come back and do this eight-episode, I guess, season four. What they’d call an “event series”? Yeah, exactly. So you were instrumental in the decision to bring it to an end at this point? Yeah. It was an open discussion with everyone. And the other thing that I did was, I tried to step away a little this season and you know, I ended up coming back because it was so much a specific part of my voice that I realised that I just need to be there and to be a part of it, so that was another part of the decision. So people can expect that things will be tied up, temporarily at least, by the end of season three? It’s not going to be another cliff-hanger? No. Well, ish! [Laughs] You can’t tell us that! It’s certainly not a cliff-hanger in the way that season one or two were. You know how series three of Luther ended? Remind me. It had a very satisfying ending, but I believe they’ve just gone and done more. There are two more episodes coming. Exactly. If Luther had ended and that was all you saw, I think that would have felt satisfying, but because I’m a fan of the show I’m glad they’re doing more. I think it’ll feel the same way with this one.
That sounds great. With something like Constantine, there were attempts made by the studio to shop it around other buyers, but obviously that wouldn’t apply in this situation? No, honestly I think I would be wary… Look, it was a complicated show to make because it was a fusion of Starz and Fox International and BBC Worldwide, but having said that, I’m not even sure if another buyer wanted to do it, I would wade into it because at the end of the day I was comfortable with the relationship that we had, and they were comfortable with me and I think I would be wary about doing it elsewhere. From the outside, it seemed to be performing, so the assumption was that it would continue. There was talk that plans for season four were going to be too expensive with what else Starz had on its slate? No, it wasn’t really. I mean, look, I’m not going to lie, the show was expensive. It looks it. It was just a question of, the show was expensive, when we started, Starz was just starting out, it didn’t have much to programme, now they have a lot. I wasn’t ready to go back into production, like next year, and I also wasn’t ready to give up the reigns, so we said, okay, let’s end it here and then if the fans want it, we’ll do another one maybe in a couple of years. You’re a really busy man. There must be a sense of relief sometimes when something ends? Like, it’s not just a case of regret, but also, ‘one less thing to think about for the time being’ [Laughs] I am busy but I adore the show and—it’s not always the case—I adore the cast and crew—look, I’ll be honest, sometimes I’ve done projects where actors and I don’t get along and the project’s still good and they might be talented but we don’t get along, but that’s not the case here. Tom [Riley], Laura [Haddock], Elliot [Cowan], Blake [Ritson], many of these people have become dear, dear friends of mine, so it was bittersweet. I think they’re partially relieved it’s over also because the shows were really hard to make, but they’re also sad, and that’s how I feel. You don’t want to get into that Sherlock situation where they go off and become megastars and then are impossible to schedule ever again. That could happen. I think they’re all really talented and I think many of our cast will become very big stars.
Talking about how busy you are, you’re kind of the architect of the DC shared universe, you have a lot of different things to look after at the moment... architect, I’m not the architect. Okay! Presumably you’re in line to direct one of the upcoming DC features? I’m not directing one of the features, no. Definitively not? No. Come the end of Batman V Superman, is there any DC film we should expect it to lead directly into? Oh, I can’t fault you for asking, but you know I can’t answer [laughs] With Suicide Squad on the way to cinemas, do you think that your Green Arrow: Escape From Super Max script, which was packed from top to bottom with DC villains, was a little ahead of its time? I think it absolutely was. I think if that script had come over the transom a couple of years later… It was completely ahead of its time. By the way, everything I see aboutSuicide Squad looks fantastic and it’s a different story. But it was absolutely ahead of its time. You know, Marvel was considering doing the Sinister Six and at the time, God, I think this was eight or nine years ago that we wrote a couple of drafts, but it certainly was like this oddball project at Warner Bros at the time, they were like—even though the script was good—‘why would we make a movie about a bunch of villains? That makes no sense’. Whatever happened to that idea? We just stopped hearing about it? It just didn’t have…it was ahead of its time, to be quite frank. The executive on it was really visionary but the higher-ups, none of whom are at Warner Bros any more, just thought at the time, you know, we just want to make Batman and Superman movies. We don’t want to make any other characters. But this is before Marvel had really taken off, before more obscure projects like Guardians Of The Galaxy or Ant-Man or things like that had huge success, before the current gold rush I guess, if you will. It’s natural that eventually someone was going to make a villain movie, so that’s just what happened!
What do you make of Starz’s decision to release the entire third season of Da Vinci’s Demons at once online? When Netflix first aired House Of Cards and decided they were going to do that, I think, like a lot of people, I mean, I liked the idea as a consumer, but I wondered whether or not that would be commercial suicide for them? Whether or not it would cannibalise the audience? That said, my wife and I tend to binge-watch most things. We rarely watch anything when it’s actually broadcast so it seems to be working. Sometimes there are shows that, as a consumer, you watch the first episode and you like it but you’re not completely hooked, and it might take until the third or fourth episode to hook you, and I think if you had to wait for that to be broadcast week to week, you might just let it pass you by, but if you’re watching over a weekend you’ll think, ‘well, I’ll try another’. In some ways it’s helping cultivate audiences. We’ll see. It’s a bold decision for them to make but on the other hand, the way they make money is different than a regular non-satellite channel, it’s all subscriber-based, so from that point of view, Starz has already made their money from the subscribers, so why not do it? Because we’re Den Of Geek, we’re obviously fans of geeky references and hidden nods in TV shows, and I know you have plenty of those in Da Vinci’s Demons, with the Bat Symbol in the roof of Leonardo’s workshop and the TARDIS hidden among his papers [a nod to the work of production designer, Ed Thomas, on Doctor Who]. Where should we be looking in season three? There are, but I'm not prepared… Jeez, oh Pete. I’ve put you on the spot I’m trying to remember. I’m super jetlagged right now, but I know there are some because we can’t resist and I drop things like that into everything I do. Right, here's one: this isn’t exactly an Easter Egg, but I will say there’s an image that happens near the end of the first episode of Da Vinci’s Demons, the pilot, that is mirrored in the second to last scene of season three. If people really think about it and think about what happened, they’ll go ‘Holy shit! I think that’s pretty cool’ That brings me to the last question then. “History is a lie” was kind of the show’s mantra. Your revisionist approach when you’ve done previous interviews seems to be “Wouldn’t it be cool if?” Looking back at Da Vinci’s Demons, what was the coolest thing the show pulled off? In terms of modifying history or in general?
Either! With the perspective of three seasons behind you, what can you look back on and think, ‘That was cool’? I think it’s bonkers that the show went to Peru! [laughs] That we were running around with the Inca. I love the fact that they were parachuting out of the Vault of Heaven. I know when I pitched that to Starz, everyone said I was completely insane and it would never work, but even theyloved it. I just think it’s crazy that we did that. I love that they get into the Vault of Heaven and they find the Brazen Head, the mechanical head that Leonardo uses to leave a message for him. It’s a real device that people are rumoured to have created. In some of the Inca tombs there were these objects that look eerily like modern-day airplanes. Then there are the Nazca Lines in the desert that are miles and miles long, and if you look at them from the sky, people are still trying to figure out why they would have made them if the only way you can see them is up a few miles in the air. I’m sure there are all sorts of aspects of history or even inventions that someone invented a hundred years or even a millennium before common knowledge, so that’s one cool aspect of it. I also think, I don’t know if I can swear or not… Permission granted. I still love what we did in episode five of the first season where we had Da Vinci’s sodomy trial, where he glued the magistrate to a pig and then projected it with a camera obscura! I just love the fact that we did that in the show, that we did something that crazy. David Goyer, thank you very much! Da Vinci’s Demons season three arrived on Starz, and online, in the US on Saturday the 24th of October and in the UK on FOX on Sunday the 26th of October.
No, Sylar was the best. 👍 @nicolejb
That’s so true @rodiziketan the original cast is what people loved about that show!! but I mean I think they had to shift and change it because of actors and contracts and script changes. But I really miss Sylar :( is it bad to say I miss the bad guy? lol.
I am just starting to watch third season, I hope they at leat put some effort in it. And about Heores reborn... why did they had to screw such a good tv show up? I do watch reborn now, but it can not compare to the original cast and story. @nicolejb
ohhh man that’s the worst when shows end like that. I’ve never seen this show but maybe they’ll come back like years later like Heroes!
I KNOW RIGHT@rodiziketan! I miss him

It's always up to you!
First of all, I am really happy to be back, to be vingle active. I took some time, away from all the internet and mass media kind of life, which I think it is something everyone of us should do every once in a while. It feels so good. But I have to say, I did miss Vingle, I missed all you lovely vinglers, sharing interesting and funny cards, and now, I am ready for round 2.0. And what is better to post, that this amazingly deep picture (which I am sure, a lot of you have already seen it, am I right?) But in case you havent, take a couple of minutes, read the text carefuly and think. Reading it over and over again makes it even better. It is a great example to approve that it is always up to us, everything. A bad thing, doesn't always have to be a bad thing, you can try and find something positive, and if you try really hard, I'm sure you'll find it. It's only a matter of perspective, and it is so easy, just to flip the case over and embrace the situation. Even if you don't agree with me, at least try. It took me quite a long time to realize this meaningful message, but now I can say, my way of thinking changed. And for the better. Think good, be good and spread the good. I share this card with all the vinglers, but at the same time I want to say "Hi" to some of you: @allischaaff @marshalledgar @alywoah @LauraFisher @TerrecaRiley @nicolejb @shannonl5 @2littlelegs @TessStevens @LizArnone @danidee @skee292 @buddyesd @onesmile @VinMcCarthy @ShadowAnggel87
Calling All Creatives: Its National Novel Writing Month !!!!
Its November and while most people think of the basic; "No Shave November", Thanksgiving pants season, or the worst of all people; The Countdown To Christmas People (stop forgetting Thanksgiving assholes), we writers recognize November as something far more....challenging. It's time to crank out a novel (50,000 words) in a mere 30 days. Thats right...November starts National Novel Writing Month! And I have to say for us procrastinating, totally undisciplined writers (raise your hand if you're with me) this month is awesome to get you kickstarted. Rules are there are no rules....just kidding there are rules but they are pretty lacks! A novel to the NANOWRIMO, which is the National Novel Writing website states that they will accept any word count between 10,000 to 999,999. This means that while your stories will have to be long they by no means have to model themselves after Game Of Thrones. How can you win? Because yes, doing this challenge can mean more then just writing a kick ass story that can make you the next Tolkien or J.K. Rowling. If you sign up on the NANOWRIMO website which is right here, then you will earn badges for getting to your daily word count goal and could even be one of the many winners at the end who will receive prizes! Whats even better is that through this website you will have forums and group chats with other writers struggling to pen their novel while juggling wok, school, family and pretty much life which always seems to be getting in the way. So take the challenge. Start that story that has been rolling around in your mind but keeps getting pushed aside by grocery lists. Take another look at the work that you are half way done with and just can't seem to sit down and finish. Talk, complain, and bitch about the struggles of writing with people doing the exact same thing as you. This November dare to start.
MRW: Netflix Edition!
Thanks to the wacky winter weather that's been keeping me indoors, I've become more and more reliant on my Netflix account. I've marathoned all the seasons of Masterchef, heavily abused the international film section, and made quite the impressive queue of stand-up comedy specials I know I need to watch. As the resident 'Netflix nut', I've decided to post a My Reaction When card responding to all the major changes happening to Netflix in February - both the shows and movies we need to finish by the end of January and the ones I'm excited are coming in soon! THEY'RE GETTING RID OF DOCTOR WHO?! How could you do that to one of the largest fandoms in the world, Netflix? Y'all are some savages. Right, @arnelli? SAVAGES. HOLY CRAP. DOES ANYONE REMEMBER TEEN WITCH? You guys, 'Teen Witch' is by far the best after-school special movie of all time - and Netflix is adding it! If you haven't seen it, YOU MUST. @ButterflyBlu, BACK ME UP. 'Jesus Camp' was on Netflix this entire time? So, I guess if you want to watch a documentary where a director takes one religious subgroup of crazy and edits it in a way to make it look like everyone who follows that religion is crazy, you only have a little time left! Hooray! They're adding TALLADEGA NIGHTS!!! I feel like this is the only Will Ferrell movie I HAVEN'T seen, but all of my friends love quoting it ("Don't you put that evil on me, Ricky Bobby!"), so finally FINALLY I can also be in the know. Has anyone else seen this? Netflix officially hates Pokémon. So apparently, on February 2nd, five Pokémon movies and two Pokémon TV shows are all being removed from the site. Damn, homies. I don't know about any of you, but if I were Pikachu, I'd be taking that ish PERSONALLY. The first season of Fuller House is here! Is anyone else just waiting for this to be the world's biggest TV disaster? I feel like it would be really, really difficult to bring a show back and have it be nearly as successful as it used to be. (However, that Boy Meets World reboot still exists, so I digress.) So there's my Netflix picks moving in or moving out in the next coming weeks. I hope you enjoyed my reactions, and if you agree or disagree, sound off in the comments below!
How to Be a Good Kisser
10 Tips From Scientific Research: What Does Science Say About How To Be A Good Kisser? In all fairness, how to be a good kisser is something no one really gets instruction in. Yet, it can be a huge part of one’s personal life and the sources we do get info from are, well, far from scientific. Let’s tackle it. Have No Illusions: Kissing Is Important Research shows kissing frequency correlates with relationship satisfaction. 59% of men and 66% of women have ended a relationship because someone was a bad kisser. People remember their first kiss more vividly than the first time they had sex. Psychologist John Bohannon from Butler University has found that most of us can recall up to 90 percent of the details of a first romantic kiss. In his study of five hundred people, most remembered this experience more vividly than their first sexual encounter. Movies like “Pretty Woman” have said that prostitutes don’t kiss on the mouth because it’s too intimate. Refraining from mouth-to-mouth kissing has been common among women of the “oldest profession” for a very long time. Social scientists Joanna Brewis and Stephen Linstead report that prostitutes often won’t kiss because it requires a “genuine desire and love for the other person.”By avoiding the lips of a client, they are best able to keep emotions out of their work. A ten-year psychology study undertaken in Germany during the 1980s found that men who kissed their wives before leaving for work lived, on average, five years longer, earning 20 to 30 percent more than peers who left without a peck good-bye. The researchers also reported that not kissing one’s wife before leaving in the morning increased the possibility of a car accident by 50 percent. Psychologists do not believe it’s the kiss itself that accounts for the difference but rather that kissers were likely to begin the day with a positive attitude, leading to a healthier lifestyle. Why Do We Kiss? Kissing is how we test if someone would (biologically) be a good mate. A good deal of the scientific literature speculates that kissing may have evolved to help us choose a suitable partner, or to realize when a match is a bad idea…The exchange of olfactory, tactile, and postural information might trigger unconscious mechanisms that guide us in deciding whether we should continue, and a kiss might even tell us about a potential partner’s level of commitment and genetic compatibility. How kissing is perceived: - It matters a lot more to women than men. - Women were very focused on men’s teeth and hygiene. - Men were much more likely to see kissing as a mere step toward sex. - Other studies reveal these differences held true across cultures. Women were far more likely to see kissing as a good way to assess a potential mate or to initiate, maintain, and monitor a long-term relationship. They also rated the breath and taste of a man’s kiss as highly significant in determining whether to keep on kissing him in the moment or the future. Women were far more interested in healthy-looking teeth, and reported valuing the experience of kissing much more than men did— before, during, and after a sexual encounter. Men, on the other hand, were much less picky about kissing and far more interested in facial and bodily attractiveness. How Do You Find Out If Someone Wants To Kiss You? This dilemma probably produces more nervousness and awkwardness than anything else related to kissing. All the sources I checked agreed: It’s a matter of breaking into your partner’s personal space in a plausibly deniable way and gauging their reaction. It’s important to note that whether or not your intentions are romantic, to kiss another person on the cheek or elsewhere— or to sniff him or her—it’s necessary to move into that individual’s “personal space.” To get this close, there must be some level of trust or expectation. Thus delivering a friendly kiss or sniff, or receiving one, amounts to an unspoken gesture of acceptance. The best specific method came from pick-up artist David D'Angelo: Guys, adjust a woman’s hair. It’s an intimate enough gesture that a flinch can tell you she’s not interested – while a more pleasant response could be a green light. Either way it provides the information necessary without making things tooawkward for either party. Advice for Women For The Art of Kissing William Cane asked men what their biggest complaints and desires were regarding kissing. Ladies, want to make guys think you’re a great kisser? Here are some takeaways from the research: - Open your mouth more. Research shows men prefer “wetter kisses with more tongue. - Initiate more. - Be more aggressive with your tongue and take an active part in the kiss. You could probably sum them all up by saying: Stop holding back. Advice For Men - Don’t jam your tongue down her throat. This was women’s most frequent complaint. You’re kissing her, not trying to implant an alien embryo in her stomach. - Keep your ears attuned to her breathing. Bluntly, make sure you’re allowing her to breathe. Women tend to enjoy kissing more when they’re not being suffocated. - “Listen” to the way she’s kissing.Match her tempo. Reply to her tongue action with similar tongue action. Leading and being aggressive can be good but being oblivious is bad. Also, aligning with the research on hygiene, take care of your teeth, use mouthwash and carry mints. No matter how attractive someone may be, poor hygiene can kill the moment before it even begins. This is particularly true for men. As preceding chapters have described, women depend heavily on taste and smell and pay close attention to teeth when evaluating a partner. A few other tidbits from an interview with William Cane, author of The Art of kissing: - “53% of women prefer (to kiss) a clean-shaven man.” - “Women’s favorite spot to be kissed, other than the mouth, is the neck.Ninety-six percent of women reported that they like neck kisses, while only about 10% of men do.” - “Women also complain that men don’t do enough variations in kissing, that they’re too machine-like or repetitive. Women would like a number of different kisses: the neck, the ears, “liposuction,” which is moving from the upper lip to the lower lip…be creative.” And It’s Not All About Technique As Sun Tzu said, “all wars are won or lost before they are ever fought.” By and large, the same is true about kissing. You can be a great kisser but behave in a way that makes sure no one ever wants to kiss you. Circumstances can hamper things as well. - Looking good matters, so look good. Yeah, it’s obvious but if you’re the guy wearing black socks with sandals and a fanny pack, take note. (More on the scientific approach to being sexier here and here). - Set the stage. Getting to know one another eases awkwardness and lays the groundwork for a hormonal profile conducive to intimacy. Love researcher Arthur Aron has a list of questions shown to make people bond almost instantly. - Context matters. If you want it to go well, pick the right time, not some sloppy smothering outside the bar. I’ve posted before about the things that help in this area; dim lights, wearing red, sharing secrets and a touch of excitement can all be a good lead-in. - Get to know your partner’s likes and dislikes. Kissing isn’t an Olympic sport judged by an objective 1-10 score. A big part of it is personal preference. Get to know your partner and you will become a better kisser in their eyes as the relationship progresses. Now go practice some “science.”

Why My Anxiety Makes Me Braver Then You.
Okay, so maybe not braver, sorry. My anxiety is pounding my skull knowing that people will get upset, think that my title is me calling them cowards, that they know I'm not brave. Don't be mad at me its not what I meant, I'm sorry. Let me start over. My anxiety makes me braver then you think; after you call me a worrier, after you deem me too "inside my head." My anxiety doesn't just clog my vision, it fogs yours to the fact that everything I do is a big deal, while flashes of "but what if the worse happens" shoot though your head in my voice. What you don't understand is that it is so very hard to live a life of spontaneity, of breathing in the air and wishing I was the wind, when my mind makes me think that every second someone I love will die because of some arbitrary decision that I chose wrong. It's hard to live a life when your brain only focuses on destruction. So, what I want you to understand is that if I had to describe myself in one word its brave. And not in the valiant knight, stand in front of an armed man to stop is bullet brave. I'm talking about how every day when I come home I check the closets, under the bed, and behind the shower curtain because I always think someone broke in. You never do that because you aren't afraid of that, you aren't anxious. But through the tight grip my anxiety has on my stomach I look. Every day. My anxiety makes me afraid of almost every situation, yet in every single one, I swallow and search out my fear; I push forward. My anxiety makes me braver then you.
