Father dies before son takes the mound for Game 1 of the World Series
Edinson Volquez took the mound for the Kansas City Royals as they faced the New York Mets in Game 1 of the World Series...
just shortly after he found out his father had passed away.
The heartbreaking news broke out as Volquez was on his way to pitch one of the biggest games of his life.
The Royals' pitcher tossed six strong innings and gave up three runs to lead the 5-4 victory over the Mets in extras, as the game was decided by Chris Young's sacrifice fly at the bottom of the 14th inning.
According to a family source, Volquez knew of his father's death before he began pitching.
And after he was taken out of the game, Volquez went straight to the clubhouse to be with his family.
Here are the highlights of today's game.
Yes the Royals won. But imagine how hard it must have been for Volquez to pitch today's game. My thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family.
