Did you know Afro could have been based on a real person whom existed back in the 1500's? That persons name was Yasuke(which is what the Japanese called him).
The Real Afro Samurai Yasuke, (variously rendered as 弥助 or 弥介, 彌助 or 彌介 in different sources.) (c. 1555/6-?) was a black (African, or of African origin) retainer who was in the service of the Japanese hegemon and warlord Oda Nobunaga between 1581 and 1582. The name "Yasuke" was granted to him by Nobunaga, although why and when is unclear. His original name is not recorded in any source, so we do not know if Yasuke is a Japanese rendering of his previous name, or a wholly new name granted by his lord. He actually came to Japan as a slave, but was then granted the title of samurai and served as a retainer to Oda Nobunaga. here's the wiki link check it out https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yasuke
Idk about you all but, This is very interesting to me and it makes Afro look alot cooler than he already is in in my eyes!
@VinMcCarthy I don't think Japan was involved in the transatlantic slave trade. Yasuke came there as a slave. Then Nobunaga gave him power.
this is awesome! I didn't know that there was much of a slave trade in japan, but this seems like the most ideal ending to this kind of story
