That was so disappointing

I have so many thoughts after the Mets' Game 1, 5-4, 14 inning loss to the Royals.

The prevailing emotion is disappointment, but here are my piece-by-piece reactions.

Matt Harvey: not bad, but not what the Mets were looking for.

After allowing a lead-off inside-the-park home run (which I still think should've been an error, but no matter), Harvey settled in really nicely for a few innings. He was himself, mowing down hitters and changing speeds really nicely.
But Ben Zobrist, a thorn in the Mets' side all night, came through big and Harvey exited after the sixth, having allowed 3 runs. The Mets need depth out of their starters if they're going to win the series, and Harvey's six innings just weren't enough.

Jeurys Familia is human.

Familia had a big 'welcome-to-the-show' moment last night. It's so easy to forget that this is his first season as a closer because of how good he's been, but that's the reality, and with inexperience comes mistakes.
Last night, he made a big one. Two outs away from a Game 1 victory, Familia served up a game-tying home run to Alex Gordon. It was crushing for the Mets, who nearly stole Game 1 on the road.
But it wasn't reasonable to expect Familia to go through the entire playoffs unscathed. He was going to slip at some point. The timing of this is tough, but I know that he will bounce back.

The Royals are extremely good.

Since they play in the American League, I hardly ever watched the Royals play this season. After last night, one thing is very clear: they are an outstanding baseball team.
There is no hole in their lineup. 1-9, they put up good at bats and come up with big hits and walks. They are the best contact team in baseball and it showed early, as Harvey seemed uncomfortable pumping fastballs. It messed with him, no question about it.

This is going to be an incredible series.

If I learned anything last night, it's that these two teams are ready to put on a spectacle. For neutral fans, this is going to be a total treat. For Mets or Royals fans, this is going to be a terribly nerve-wracking couple of days.
The MLB's office is going to be thrilled with the quality of the games. Last night was a really, really, really good baseball game. It had everything: baserunning, pitching, hitting, fielding, mistakes, drama, you name it.
It was a tough loss for the Mets in Game 1, but it's only Game 1. They can bounce back with deGrom on the hill tonight. I have faith.

Did you watch the game? What are your reactions?

The Woman Who Struck Out Babe Ruth
And Lou Gehrig too. On April 2, 1931 the seventeen year-old Jackie Mitchell struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig back-to-back. They were arguably the deadliest hitting duo in baseball history, and she did it in only seven pitches. Which is pretty damn impressive. Less impressive is what happened afterwards. "They are too delicate. It would kill them to play ball every day." Ruth wasn't the most gracious in defeat (via), and some historians have dismissed the exhibition game as an April Fool's Prank. It's unlikely that Ruth would have been visibly upset if he struck out on purpose, nor would he have asked the umpire to inspect the ball. And a few days later, Mitchell's contract was voided on the basis that baseball was "too strenuous" for women. Yeah, beating some of the most famous players of all time sounds really strenuous. What if she broke a nail?! /sarcasm She kept playing anyway. So clearly the game wasn't TOO strenuous (she died in 1987 at the age of 74). She joined the amateur team House of David in 1933, and retired in 1937. Meanwhile, women weren't formally banned from the MLB until 1952, though unofficially they were often kept off the field. Such was the case for Eleanor Engle, who never took the field. The President of the minor leagues stated that no contract with a woman would be approved because “not in the best interest of baseball that such travesties be tolerated.” In the 1970s girls were allowed to join Little League, in the 80s women joined college baseball, and in the 1990s, Ila Borders joined the St. Paul Saints of the independent Northern League. But no female player has reached the majors (yet). But the 100-year anniversary of the time a teenage girl struck out some of the toughest hitters in baseball history. Maybe it'll happen again in 2031?
Back To The Future or the Curse of the Billy Goat?
Yes, the Cubs clinched a spot in the playoffs for the first time since 2008. Yes, They beat the Pirates in the National League wild card game. Yes, they clinched the NLDS against the St. Louis Cardinals. Now, they only have to beat the Mets to make it to the World Series. But there's something more to the Cubs' run for the World Series. As @LizArnone have mentioned in her card, "The Cubs Have Been Destined To Win The World Series Since 1989". In Back To The Future II time traveling Marty McFly ends up in 2015 with a holographic news story blaring the Cubs have just won the World Series. Thats something that hasn't happened since 1908! So can Back To The Future II beat break the famous Curse of the Billy Goat? The Curse of the Billy Goat was placed on the Chicago Cubs when Billy Goat Tavern owner, Billy Sianis was asked to leave the World Series game against the Detroit Tigers at Wrigley Field because his pet goat's odor was bothering other fans. As he was leaving the game, Sianis said, "Them Cubs, they ain't gonna win no more." And yes, the Cubs haven't won a World Series since 1908 nor have they been to one since 1945. The Cubs have been amazing this year so far under the leadership of manager, Joe Maddon. Even though they're two games down in the NLCS right now, they still have a chance to make a comeback and appear in their first World Series since 1945. But wait. Did you know that the goat that was forced to leave along with Billy Sianis was called Murphy? And.... Daniel Murphy, the hot-hitting Mets infielder, who was also the NLDS MVP when the Mets faced the Dodgers, hit a monster home run against Cubs' ace Jake Arrieta. Coincidence? Well, I'll leave it up to you to decide! Who do you think will come on top on this one? 1. Back To The Future II 2. The Murphy Brothers: Murphy the Goat and Daniel Murphy
Harvey misses team practice, "I screwed up"
The Mets are made the playoffs for the first time in nine years. Tickets are already sold out and Queens is getting ready to welcome back playoff baseball. But they are not off to a great start. Yesterday, Mets ace Matt Harvey missed a mandatory team workout at Citi Field. His excuse? TRAFFIC! Manager Terry Collins said Harvey will be fined for missing mandatory team practice. But he said Harvey will not miss any games and went on to say, "This is minor. This isn't college, where he's going to miss the first quarter of a football game. I'm going to take care of it in-house. I deal with it one way. The players deal with it another way. He's going to get fined. It's no big deal. He's going to continue to pitch. He f----- up. People do that. He feels bad. The players will take care of it on their own. We don't need it. We need to try to stay as positive as we can." Harvey also apologize for his actions and said, "Basically, there's no excuse. I screwed up. I wasn't here. I showed up a little late." The Mets and Harvey haven't been getting along too well especially after the stint they had with Scott Boras, his agent, last month when Boras requested they don't have Harvey pitch more than 180 innings. Personally, I don't really give a damm whether Harvey was stuck in traffic or not. I don't care what he was doing before that. Baseball is a team sport. And if you have a mandatory team practice, you should not miss it under any circumstances, especially if you are the ace and center of that team that is contending in the postseason for the first time in nine years! I am really interested to hear what @jeff4122 has to say. Are you going to defend your best pitcher for missing "mandatory team practice"?
MLB Top Plays of the Day (09/29/15)
Here are your Top 5 Plays of the Day! 5. Anthony Gose (Detroit Tigers) This one went deep and looked like trouble for the Detroit Tigers. But Gose was already at the fence to leap up and snag that home run from Moreland. He timed his jump perfectly and made the play even better with the nonchalant, sidearm throw after he made the catch. The Tigers fell to the Rangers 7-6. 4. Lorenzo Cain (Kansas City Royals) Another great play from a center fielder! The ball stayed high up in the air for some time and looked as if it was just going over the center field wall. Lorenzo Cain however wasn't going to give up and was not afraid of the fence. He leaped up and caught the ball to rob Thompson's home run. The Royals however fell to the White Sox 4-2. 3. Drew Stubbs (Texas Rangers) It's the top of the ninth with the Rangers leading by 1. Runners are on second and third and a big hit could turn the game around. And that is exactly what Ian Kinsler did as he hit one deep into the outfield. But Stubbs wasn't going to let this one get by. He ran full speed and caught the ball to end the game and lead the Rangers to victory. You could see he went all out as he leaped up the fence and almost went over it. Thanks to an amazing play by Stubbs, the Rangers beat the Tigers 7-6. 2. Trayce Thompson (Chicago White Sox) We all know Trayce Thompson is Superman by day, and baseball player by night. Another fantastic play by the Chicago White Sox outfielder. He reached, leaped, and flew for a couple of seconds to make that catch and end the inning. What a play! The White Sox beat the Royals with Thompson's amazing play, 4-2. 1. Martin Prado (Miami Marlins) I'm just going to say it one more time by Martin Prado is one of the best third basemen in the league. He is also one of the toughest players as well. He made it to the list once again with this amazing over-the-fence play when he chased the ball all the way into foul territory, leaped over the fence, and caught it. Derek Jeter might have left baseball, but we definitely have a lot of players to fill his shoes. The Marlins fell to the Rays 4-2. Now that was your Top 5 Plays of the Day from last night's games! What was your favorite play of the day? @christianmordi @jeff4122 @ljk901023 @TessStevens @ButterflyBlu @superiorsl @Starbell808 @jokes @DonnaMelton @BEAUTYgirlARIEL @David19Flo23 @karencorchado @SamuelRodriguez *If you guys would like to be tagged every time I upload a Top 5 Plays of the Day card, please let me know by commenting on the comments section below!
[MLB Community] Welcome Baseball Fans!
Welcome MLB fans! This is Michael, your former Sports community moderator…and this quarter’s new MLB community moderator! Even though I’m going to miss being the Sports community moderator, I’m sure my main man, @KyleBerke, will do an excellent job in making the community great. In the meantime, I’m going to moderate my favorite sports of all time, BASEBALL! This year’s Major League season starts on April 3rd, 2016, starting with the game between division rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates. It will be a face-off between Adam Wainwright and Francisco Liriano. There’s a lot to look forward to this season…but since its the beginning of the season, let’s have some fun in predicting this year’s World Series champion! Here are my Top 3 picks for the 2016 World Series Champion. San Francisco Giants I mean why not? It’s an even year and they acquired two great pitchers to their starting rotation, the Shark and Johnny Baseball, and also have Denard Span in outfield! And they still have MadBum and Buster Posey, the best catcher in the league! Bruce Bochy is ready to show the world that it’s no longer Even Year Magic. It’s Even Year Science! Chicago Cubs Can the curse be reversed? I think so, especially with Theo Epstein as their GM? He’s done it with the Red Sox, why not with the Cubs! With Joe Maddon as their manager, if Jake Arrieta can put up monster numbers, and the Kris Bryant + Anthony Rizzo combo can drive in runs, they have a great shot of reversing the curse! Kansas City Royals The 2015 World Series Champions. They resigned Alex Gordon, and they still have Kendrys Morales (.847 OPS) and Mike Moustakas (who posted career highs in batting average, HRs, and RBIs). Oh and let’s not forget about Lorenzo Cain who came in 3rd in the MVP voting last season. And Ned Yost is just an amazing manager! Well, can’t wait to connect with all the baseball fans out there right here on Vingle! Who do you guys think is going to win this year’s World Series?
