The Mets' silver lining from the Game 1 loss

I know, I know: you show me a good loser, and I'll show you a loser.

But this isn't a one-game playoff. It's a seven game series. There's lots of time for the Mets to bounce back.
Last night's marathon game was so exciting. It was a great baseball game. Even though the Mets lost, I believe that they actually will benefit from the unusual length of the game and the toll that it took on the teams.

Here's why.

The Mets' pitching is still better.

There's no doubt about it. Especially tonight, in a HUGE Game 2, the Mets enter with the advantage, as their ace Jacob deGrom is just plain better than the Royals' Johnny Cueto.
deGrom is also capable of going deep into the game, as he has had a full week of rest. That could be huge on a night when both teams' bullpens will be tired from pitching basically every guy on the staff last night.

Most importantly, though, the Mets' bullpen was better set up for a long game than the Royals'.

Bartolo Colon wasn't great last night and eventually walked away with the loss in Game 1, but what he did do is eat innings. That's what he does best. He pitched 2.1 innings in a game that the Mets needed, and even by losing he contributed.
The Royals had no true long reliever in their bullpen and were forced to use Chris Young, who they had planned to have start in Game 4. That means their whole strategy will have to be altered.
So now they Mets have the advantage tonight with deGrom against Cueto. They probably have the advantage in Game 3 with Syndergaard against Yordano Ventura, though that's a really even matchup.

But they definitely have the advantage in Game 4, with Steven Matz likely facing Edison Volquez on short rest.

Chris Young, who also pitched three innings, will almost surely not be able to start Game 4 as planned. Steven Matz, who obviously did not pitch last night, will get to pitch against a patchwork pitching team for the Royals.

It's really going to screw with their rotation, I can just smell it.

Think about it: if Volquez goes on four days' rest in Game 4, he won't be able to pitch deep into the game.

The Royals will have to stretch their bullpen for the entire season because of the way they used Young last night.

I can't blame them - after all, it's the World Series, and you do whatever it takes to win the game that is right in front of you, rather than worrying about tomorrow - but the implications of last night's marathon undoubtedly favor the Mets, the way I see it.

I agree with DannyMoses! Tonight's gonna be a good match and I guess it really depends on how much Cueto can step up his stuff!

San Diego, get your shit together. Each year at the Padres stadium, Petco Park, the LGBT society in SD holds an event called "Out at the Park" that is meant to bring the community together for an evening of baseball. This year, Petco Park really, really screwed up. The San Diego Men's Gay Chorus was meant to sing the national anthem before the game to represent the LGBT community for this event. Their voices were never heard. The stadium let them take the field, and then as they were about to sing, a recorded female voice instead sang the anthem (which, if you've been to a Padres game, isn't something that happens - we always have live singing) The men had to walk off the field hearing people shouting profane, homophobic things at them. The Padres said it was a mistake, a technical error, a third party contractor, and that they were sorry. But that doesn't explain the other examples of mistreatment. Days prior to the game, the Padres organization told the performers that the chorus would have to pay for their tickets in order to sing. This is not something that happens, ever. If you perform the national anthem, you get to enter the park for free, DUH. Why did the Padres suddenly want this now? That would have cost the small organization thousands of dollars, and after dispute they were finally allowed in as performers. You can listen to their great voices here when they performed in 2015. It's a pity their voices weren't heard this year. Get it together Padres, you're a disappointment in baseball but don't be a disappointment to your entire community.

That was so disappointing
I have so many thoughts after the Mets' Game 1, 5-4, 14 inning loss to the Royals. The prevailing emotion is disappointment, but here are my piece-by-piece reactions. Matt Harvey: not bad, but not what the Mets were looking for. After allowing a lead-off inside-the-park home run (which I still think should've been an error, but no matter), Harvey settled in really nicely for a few innings. He was himself, mowing down hitters and changing speeds really nicely. But Ben Zobrist, a thorn in the Mets' side all night, came through big and Harvey exited after the sixth, having allowed 3 runs. The Mets need depth out of their starters if they're going to win the series, and Harvey's six innings just weren't enough. Jeurys Familia is human. Familia had a big 'welcome-to-the-show' moment last night. It's so easy to forget that this is his first season as a closer because of how good he's been, but that's the reality, and with inexperience comes mistakes. Last night, he made a big one. Two outs away from a Game 1 victory, Familia served up a game-tying home run to Alex Gordon. It was crushing for the Mets, who nearly stole Game 1 on the road. But it wasn't reasonable to expect Familia to go through the entire playoffs unscathed. He was going to slip at some point. The timing of this is tough, but I know that he will bounce back. The Royals are extremely good. Since they play in the American League, I hardly ever watched the Royals play this season. After last night, one thing is very clear: they are an outstanding baseball team. There is no hole in their lineup. 1-9, they put up good at bats and come up with big hits and walks. They are the best contact team in baseball and it showed early, as Harvey seemed uncomfortable pumping fastballs. It messed with him, no question about it. This is going to be an incredible series. If I learned anything last night, it's that these two teams are ready to put on a spectacle. For neutral fans, this is going to be a total treat. For Mets or Royals fans, this is going to be a terribly nerve-wracking couple of days. The MLB's office is going to be thrilled with the quality of the games. Last night was a really, really, really good baseball game. It had everything: baserunning, pitching, hitting, fielding, mistakes, drama, you name it. It was a tough loss for the Mets in Game 1, but it's only Game 1. They can bounce back with deGrom on the hill tonight. I have faith. Did you watch the game? The 5 Strangest Superstition in Sports!
Hello sports fans! It's Friday the 13th! Here are some of the strangest superstitions in sports! Michael Jordan Michael always wore his UNC shorts under his NBA shorts. Thus, he wore longer shorts than his fellow players at that time. In the end however, his fellow players followed suit after the legend. Serena Williams Serena Williams is known for not changing socks once during a tournament. It sucks to wear a pair of socks for more than a day...imagine how it would feel to wear the same socks for an entire tournament! I guess Serena doesn't mind it considering the number of tournaments she has won. Brian Ulracher Brian Ulracher ate two chocolate chip cookies before every game. Maybe that was the secret to his muscular body. I think it'd be fair to call him the "Cookie Monster". Caron Butler Caron Butler was known to be an avid fan of Mountain Dew. He loved the drink so much that he drank before and during every game. During his UNC days, he asked his wife to pick him a 2-L bottle of the green stuff, and drank half of it before the game, and the rest during half-time. In 2007, the Wizards and NBA banned him from drinking it during games so he eventually quit the whole thing in 2009. Moises Alou This one has to be the most f*cked up one out of all of them. Moises Alou used to pee on his own hands to harden them! Should we see that as commitment to the game of baseball or just some pretty weird ass shit? Oh and by the way, don't try to harden your hands by peeing on them ladies and gentlemen, because doctors have confirmed that peeing on your hand doesn't harden them. It actually softens them. @jeff4122 @ButterflyBlu @superiorsl @Starbell808 @DonnaMelton @InPlainSight @jokes @BEAUTYgirlARIEL @David19Flo23 @karencorchado @salahabdalla @Moose892 @BrookieyElba @SamuelRodriguez @ValerieAlissaPa @xitlalicordova1 @AndrewMaldonado @Jovi @Shippudenguy21 @AbdulrahmanSaad @trinityarcangel @thefeels @Link4TW @ChriSingularis @sanazsanaz @WilliamBrown @DannyMoses @ClaySharko @Ravenwing92 @FromBlue2U @TravisBeck @LemissaNicole @BossDominata @gatorchick96 @MatthewBoughton @MarcusJiles @BrandonMcNeil @MalikLawary @KyleBerke @manbungo2000 @DerekGumtow @havic @Straightshooter @PhilAnthony @Kirooken @yaakattackk @RodneyYoung @DreJones @JonathanKerns @bnzattoni @TravisManning @GalacticChakra @smothgreen @afxs @johnnolastname @ChristopherKenn @ChasePage @coreywriley91@MikeWolf @MrTenThirty @JasonNilsson @BrunoDutch @SherzTYC @krishntejanand @addri @ChrisStephens What was your favorite one from the list? Blue Jays fight one back
Toronto needed one, and they got it. After dropping Games 1 and 2 to the Royals in Kansas City, the Blue Jays absolutely had to have Game 3 in order to save their season. Going down 3-0 would not have boded well for their chances. Early in the game, it looked like Kansas City was going to continue their hot streak - they scored in the top of the first to make it 1-0. However, the Blue Jays jumped on Johnny Cueto, scoring 3 runs in the second and putting up a six spot in the 3rd. Cueto has been all over the place recently. After being traded from the Reds to the Royals at the deadline in the summer, when he was one of the best pitchers in the league, the long-haired monster has struggled mightily since coming to Kansas City. He had a few good starts in earlier in the playoffs, but was rocked in Monday's game, putting up a line of 2.0 innings pitched, walking 4 and allowing 6 hits and 8 runs. Das not good. Blue Jays starter Marcus Strohman wasn't great - he allowed 11 hits over 6.1 innings - but he limited the damage to 4 runs allowed, which was enough on a night that the Blue Jays really had the bats going. So now the series is 2-1, still in favor of the Royals, with two more games in Toronto before the series heads back to Kansas City for Game 6 and Game 7. It's getting tighter, and tonight's game will go a long way to either watching Kansas City start to wrap things up or seeing Toronto level the thing at 2. Tonight, it's knuckeballer R.A. Dickey for Toronto vs. Chris Young for the Royals. I'm happy to see Dickey, an ex-Met, get a really key start in the playoffs. I'm rooting for the Royals in this series, but think Toronto gets the win tonight behind the veteran starter. What do you think? Will KC take a 3-1 lead tonight or can Toronto continue to fight? @ButterflyBlu @superiorsl @Starbell808 @DonnaMelton @jokes @BEAUTYgirlARIEL @David19Flo23 @karencorchado @SamuelRodriguez @xitlalicordova1 @AndrewMaldonado @Link4TW @DannyMoses @ClaySharko @Ravenwing92 @FromBlue2U @LemissaNicole @BossDominata @MalikLawary @KyleBerke

The slow death of the fan forum
Way back before the web turned into the behemoth it presently is, football fanzines were the objective for fan remark and conversation. Back during the 1990s, Football Forums started to succeed and develop, with very much run autonomous locales viably supplanting fanzines in the mind of football fans hoping to impart their insights and talk about their clubs with their kindred fans. Yet, a look at fan discussions nowadays (and the fan forums for my own club, Gillingham FC, specifically) recommends things are particularly on the wind down. The football gathering is gradually vanishing, and it’s bit by bit being supplanted by web-based media. Before we shut it down last year the Gills365 Forum was performing unequivocally contrasted with different Gills forums out there, yet it was as yet in consistent decay contrasted with past seasons as far as the volume, profundity and level of conversation. Taking a gander at different discussions apparently to be a comparative story, with just a modest bunch of clients — and sometimes only a few — giving the main part of the movement on the loads up. Also, the actual club shut down their discussions subsequent to letting what was before a flourishing local area separate and vanish through an absence of consideration. 10 years prior certain Gills discussions would handily pull in more than 200–300 posts each week. A little while these days you could separate that number by 10. The justification for this can be found in the manner individuals utilize the web to impart nowadays. Forums may have been the go-to places for all football visits and discussion, thinking back to the 1990s and mid 2000s, however we now live in the realm of web-based media, and the conversation has moved to organizations like Facebook and Twitter. Facebook bunches permit a comparable assemblage of fans on an objective page, however with an all around perceived stage and without the requirement for any kind of specialized nous. Setting up a gathering page is simple, and on the off chance that you can get individuals you need onto it routinely, you’ll have a hive of conversation and action in two or three weeks. Then, at that point there’s Twitter. It’s my online media outlet of decision, and is significantly more prompt and live than Facebook. Twitter dominates during live occasions, as fans can in a flash share their interpretation of occasions, as they occur, and continuously. It’s something we exploited effectively on Gills365, which was the principal Gills outlet anyplace to accept online media. Our #gills365 hashtag demonstrated tremendously well known during matches specifically, with fans at the ground tweeting their updates adding #gills365 to their tweets to allow ousted allies to finish the activity with a totaled feed of the multitude of inhabitant fans’ updates. All the more as of late fans have begun making their own networks on Facebook, and there are several very much upheld conversation bunches on Facebook where individuals can impart their perspectives to individual fans. The two stages have a lot to bring to the table. Facebook offers all the more a local area building angle, though Twitter is considerably more ‘at the time’. The development in prominence of both has implied football fans have floated towards them, as opposed to fan gatherings, for their football conversations. Twitter permits fans the chance to peruse and react straightforwardly to writers, media sources and even players themselves, and has given an additional measurement to the game as those columnists and players who decide to do so assist with narrowing the hole between the expert game and its fans. With Facebook offering suitable, free, options in contrast to gatherings, and Twitter offering the capacity to remark and impart insights live and continuously, the time of the fan discussion would seem to have passed.
[MLB Community] Welcome Baseball Fans!
Welcome MLB fans! This is Michael, your former Sports community moderator…and this quarter’s new MLB community moderator! Even though I’m going to miss being the Sports community moderator, I’m sure my main man, @KyleBerke, will do an excellent job in making the community great. In the meantime, I’m going to moderate my favorite sports of all time, BASEBALL! This year’s Major League season starts on April 3rd, 2016, starting with the game between division rivals, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates. It will be a face-off between Adam Wainwright and Francisco Liriano. There’s a lot to look forward to this season…but since its the beginning of the season, let’s have some fun in predicting this year’s World Series champion! Here are my Top 3 picks for the 2016 World Series Champion. San Francisco Giants I mean why not? It’s an even year and they acquired two great pitchers to their starting rotation, the Shark and Johnny Baseball, and also have Denard Span in outfield! And they still have MadBum and Buster Posey, the best catcher in the league! Bruce Bochy is ready to show the world that it’s no longer Even Year Magic. It’s Even Year Science! Chicago Cubs Can the curse be reversed? I think so, especially with Theo Epstein as their GM? He’s done it with the Red Sox, why not with the Cubs! With Joe Maddon as their manager, if Jake Arrieta can put up monster numbers, and the Kris Bryant + Anthony Rizzo combo can drive in runs, they have a great shot of reversing the curse! Kansas City Royals The 2015 World Series Champions. They resigned Alex Gordon, and they still have Kendrys Morales (.847 OPS) and Mike Moustakas (who posted career highs in batting average, HRs, and RBIs). Oh and let’s not forget about Lorenzo Cain who came in 3rd in the MVP voting last season. And Ned Yost is just an amazing manager! Well, can’t wait to connect with all the baseball fans out there right here on Vingle! Who do you guys think is going to win this year’s World Series?
Mets fans are calling for the heater
For the first two games of the series, it seemed as if the Mets outsmarted themselves. They got intimidated by the Royals' reputation for hitting fastballs, so Matt Harvey and Jacob deGrom - both of whom have outstanding fastballs that are difficult for anyone to hit - went away from their fastball. deGrom and Harvey were not beaten because the Royals attacked their fastballs. They were beaten because they hardly threw their best pitch in the first place. deGrom, who usually throws something like 65% fastballs, threw only about 35% heaters in his Game 2 loss. This is the World Series. You can't be too cute. You have to rely on what got you here. For the Mets, it's in large part their starters' fastballs. So now analysts and fans alike have been calling on Noah Syndergaard, Game 3's starter for the Mets, to do one thing early and often: PUMP THE HEATER ! It's better to go down swinging, being the team that we have been all season, rather than to limp out because we got outsmarted, right? I know Syndergaard doesn't ever look like he feels pressure, but tonight there's going to be lots of it. It's as simple as this: the Mets need Syndergaard to save their season. So, with that said, it's time for Terry Collins to advise his young starter to go in with the wheels already off. Syndergaard has one of the hardest and most brutalizing fastballs in baseball. Let him use it. Often. The Royals have attacked the Mets for the first two games of the series. Let's get them back in Game 3 and attack them with a crushing fastball and some good, old-fashioned HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE! Citi Field is ready. I'm ready. A letter to the Mets' owners
Dear Fred and Jeff Wilpon, Please resign Yoenis Cespedes. This shouldn't be too much to ask. The team's payroll is currently somewhere just above $100,000,000. And I know that seems like a lot. Honestly speaking, it is. But relatively speaking, it isn't very much at all. It should be higher. This is a big team in a big market coming off a big year. Spend some money. Please, we're begging you. You made a great move last year by bringing Cespedes in right before the trade deadline. You restored faith in a franchise whose fans needed some love. We have been through a lot in the past decade (and before then, too), and you gave us some indication that you were ready to help this team win. And guess what? It almost paid off. Cespedes turned into a superstar and a fan favorite overnight and turned the Mets from an average team into a potentially great one. With the pitching that this team has in place for the next few years, it won't take that much to push them over the edge and make them legit World Series candidates. But we need a hitter. Bad. Cespedes is that guy. You don't have to sign him to a massive deal of 6 years for $150 million. I understand your hesitation there - he's aging, and can make some silly mistakes in the field. But 2 years for $50-60 million should not be too much to ask. Not for this team. Not in this market. Not with this kind of potential. You see, without Cespedes, the Mets are somewhere on the outside of the top 10 teams in the league, even with their pitching. Without Cespedes, they are a much worse team than the one that made the World Series last year. Without Cespedes, the aging David Wright and the second-year Michael Conforto will be relied on for too much. Without Cespedes, there is a gaping hole in the middle of this lineup. With Cespedes, though, this team is among the league's best. No question about it. He's still on the market, and we should have signed him a long time ago. But there is still time to make amends. You can still take advantage of the strange free agent market right now and make Cespedes the offer that he wants - rumors have it that he wants to be back in New York - and turn these Mets into not only a team that we love, but a team that we believe in. Give us something to believe in. We've waited long enough, and we know how good this team can be. Let's make it happen. Signed, A Hopeful Mets fan
How can you diagnose pain?
Your healthcare professional will perform a physical exam and ask questions if you are seeking medical attention for pain. You should be able to describe your pain, including its origin, intensity, duration, and severity. You may also be asked by your doctor: How pain can impact your life If you have any other symptoms If there are triggers that make it worse, If you have any medical conditions, please let us know. If you have suffered any recent injuries, illnesses If you have recently made changes to your exercise or diet regimen, If you are taking medication or supplements Your doctor may order the following tests depending on your symptoms and your medical history to determine the cause of your pain. To check for infection, blood tests, stool tests or cerebral spinal fluid tests are all available. Endoscopy is used to examine your reproductive, gastrointestinal, and respiratory tracts for damage. X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans or ultrasound scans can be used to determine if there are any signs of damage to your muscles, ligaments or bones. Functional pain syndromes are those where there is no evidence of underlying disease. After other possible causes have been ruled out, these syndromes can be diagnosed based only on the symptoms. How can pain be treated? The cause of pain, if any, must be addressed. Once the cause of acute pain has been addressed or eliminated, it will usually go away. Chronic pain, particularly if it is from an unknown cause, can be more difficult and costly to manage. You might experience pain from an injury. It might heal on its own or you may need medication, surgery or other medical attention. An infection can cause pain that doesn't go away on its own, or it may require medication or other treatment. Your doctor may prescribe medication, surgery or other treatments to treat chronic conditions such as arthritis, cancer, and chronic migraines. The healthcare professional may also recommend pain relief treatments. They might recommend or prescribe: Over-the-counter pain relief medications, such as aspirin, acetaminophen or ibuprofen, are available. Prescription anti-inflammatory drugs such as corticosteroids and certain COX-2 inhibitors are available. Opioid medications may be prescribed to relieve acute pain after surgery or injury. Massage is a technique in which the therapist massages muscles and other soft tissues to relieve tension and pain. Meditation is a way to relax and release tension and stress through meditation Tai chi and yoga combine gentle movements with deep breathing to stimulate the muscles and relieve tension. Progressive muscle relaxation is a method of consciously relaxing different muscle groups and promoting relaxation. Guided imagery allows you to visualize calming images through guided imagery Your doctor might also suggest lifestyle changes or home remedies that can help you manage your pain. They might suggest that you: Apply a cold pack wrapped in a towel to reduce inflammation and swelling from injuries or chronic conditions like arthritis. Warm baths or heating pads can be used to relieve stiffness, soreness or cramps. Avoid or limit certain triggers or activities that can make your pain worse. Take steps to reduce stress and make it less stressful Regular gentle exercise Get enough sleep Lose weight Follow the RICE general rule for minor injuries that do not require medical attention. The injured area can be treated Apply a towel-wrapped cold or ice pack to the area. Ice it for between 10 and 20 minutes. Apply pressure to the area. Wrap it in an elastic bandage that provides support but is not too tight that it causes numbness. Lift the area that is injured above your heart
Harvey misses team practice, "I screwed up"
The Mets are made the playoffs for the first time in nine years. Tickets are already sold out and Queens is getting ready to welcome back playoff baseball. But they are not off to a great start. Yesterday, Mets ace Matt Harvey missed a mandatory team workout at Citi Field. His excuse? TRAFFIC! Manager Terry Collins said Harvey will be fined for missing mandatory team practice. But he said Harvey will not miss any games and went on to say, "This is minor. This isn't college, where he's going to miss the first quarter of a football game. I'm going to take care of it in-house. I deal with it one way. The players deal with it another way. He's going to get fined. It's no big deal. He's going to continue to pitch. He f----- up. People do that. He feels bad. The players will take care of it on their own. We don't need it. We need to try to stay as positive as we can." Harvey also apologize for his actions and said, "Basically, there's no excuse. I screwed up. I wasn't here. I showed up a little late." The Mets and Harvey haven't been getting along too well especially after the stint they had with Scott Boras, his agent, last month when Boras requested they don't have Harvey pitch more than 180 innings. Personally, I don't really give a damm whether Harvey was stuck in traffic or not. I don't care what he was doing before that. Baseball is a team sport. And if you have a mandatory team practice, you should not miss it under any circumstances, especially if you are the ace and center of that team that is contending in the postseason for the first time in nine years! I am really interested to hear what @jeff4122 has to say. Are you going to defend your best pitcher for missing "mandatory team practice"?

Symptoms of lumbar disc herniation The most susceptible disc to degenerate are L4-L5 and L5-S1 There are many ways to describe the clinical presentation of herniated back but there are 2 main groups of symptoms: • One is lumbar spine pain symptom: when suffering from this symptom, the patient will tend to support the back / side often to relieve pain, or limit lumbar spine movement. • Two are symptoms caused by nerve damage: Because the lumbar spinal nerve dominates movement and feeling for the lower limbs as well as the pelvis.
