Recently as I've started utilizing a delicate layering process where I start with very light cross-hatching strokes using light 2H or 4H leads - loaded into my 0.3mm mechanical pencil (in the photo above you can see how smudged it is... it's the yellow one - It's really my favorite illustration tool); I have discovered I need a bright light source I can adjust the placement of. You'll note the LED light - on an adjustable neck - clipped to my clipboard. It is a Mighty Bright light - made right here in Santa Barbara, CA by Gold Crest, LLC. I always try to buy local if I can! :D It is a great tool that's a real game-changer as I focus on deeper layers of detail.
I used the "negative space" illustration style that is more typical of my pen & ink illustrations - I learned from one of my many illustration instructors in my youth - the amazing Linda Thorne - that what ISN'T on the canvas is often as important and can define the composition as the strokes that ARE present. This has had a profound affect on my illustration style through the years.
