To Love or not to Love-
...It's not even a Question.
My response to the Love or Hate challenge by: @hikaymm
That's right folks. There is only one character that makes an utter mess of my heart, and it's this adorkable guy right here. Sakata Gintoki is the main protagonist of the Gintama series. He is the founder and president of the Yorozuya Gin-Chan, as well as a highly skilled samurai, having fought in the Joui War in the past.
Nothing is known about Gintoki's biological parents. As a child and orphan, he looted food from corpses in the battlefield to the point of being known as a "corpse-eating demon." After being picked up from that bloody hell, he was taught the way of the samurai. He was put through even more emotionally wrecking tests and due to certain circumstances, he later joined in the last years of the Joui War; becoming known as the Shiroyasha (lit. White Demon) for his powerful swordplay and demonic white appearance.
Since then, he founded the Old Yorozuya, and later, the current Yorozuya, consisting of Shimura Shinpachi, Kagura, Sadaharu[Large Dog] and himself.
Gintoki has many childish personality traits despite his age, calling himself a child in a man's body. He is very lazy, and is often shown reading Jump and lying around the Yorozuya. He has an incredibly funny side. His normal use of dirty talk, scatological innuendos, and ability to find ladies in unstrategic places also seem to suggest this. His past continues to influence who he is and how he acts. He admitted at one point that he believes having a loving family is all someone really needs in life. (Due to his own lack of a family.) His inability to protect many of his friends in the Joui war still haunts him, even feeling regret ;as a result he is -very- protective of his current friends. He acts like a coward most of the time and will attempt to leave behind his friends if his life is in danger, but this only occurs in the more comical stories, as he is willing to risk his life for anyone, and is shown to be extremely caring.
He has indeterminate grey/green/blue (in the manga) or bordeaux-colored (in the anime) "dead fish eyes" (comparison courtesy of Hijikata Toushirou), which are called such because they are nearly always half-lidded. Generally he wears the same outfit and he has a closet full of duplicates, so whenever it gets destroyed, he can appear in the next episode or chapter with a new one. All in all, his outfit suggests an air of laziness, and may be a reflection of his own personal sense of style.
Despite his appearance and initial behavior, Gin has a great amount of pride for the old bushido code. He takes it upon himself to rescue or avenge not only his comrades and friends but also people he barely knows. It's been said he's a bit of a sadist. Despite all these traits (or perhaps due to these traits) Gin possesses immense charisma and is able to attract anyone, he always knows what to say to make anyone feel more comfortable and can make anyone laugh even in the most inappropriate times and make them feel alive. This ability has given him very loyal allies and friends and even former enemies.
Sweets. (He is obsessed with sweet food such as parfaits, ice cream and cakes. To the point of nearly developing diabetes. Strawberry milk is his favorite.) His second obsession is reading the manga anthology magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump. (Which, not coincidentally, is where Gintama is published in). Gin will go to great lengths to get the latest Jump issue, to the point of reckless behavior. His Jump obsession makes him easily dream of being like other Jump heroes, including wishing that he had a "Bankai" similar to the hero characters of Bleach. He also goes through great lengths for Meat; or free meals. He loves alcohol but his tolerance for sake is not high. Being drunk has got him quite a few messes. (Due to his poverty, he is always behind on his rent.) He attempts to save money whenever he can, but he also loves to play Pachinko and other gambling games, resulting in him spending all his money and running or making excuses when it's time to pay rent.
He is extremely scared of ghosts, but is very sensitive to their presence and many times will try to deny their existence. Mayonnaise. Smoking. He seems to dislike his curly perm hair. (He says his lack of girlfriends is due to his 'natural perm' hair. Though there are quite a few women interested in him. He's quite picky.)
Lazy... sugar-filled and for the most part a goofy fellow, he does manage to say things that stick with you. A lot of the quotes have deep meaning and flow wonderfully with the story of Gintama and it's characters.
Though Gin does tend to sport a goofy care-free sort of smile; there are times when his expression is hauntingly beautiful. The smile may still linger, but it changes drastically. The struggle within is sometimes too much, and something heart-crushing and memorizing appears. You can feel the pain sharply just through the shift in his countenance and the emotional mirror of his eyes and body language. This is one of things I love most about him. He honestly tries his best to appear all is well, but that is usually not the case. Protecting what he loves and a deep sense of duty battle within him with each step.

Through everything Gintoki has managed to make his own family. He protects what's close to him and he truly has a heart worthy of love. His sword protects his soul and his loved ones with a ferocity that walks a line of a fallen-demons wrath. He's not perfect. Not by a long shot. His many traits make him both ridiculous and addictive. I wouldn't ever tire of him, nor Gintama as a whole. He's my sweet-soulmate. Well, in that obsessed sort of way we tend to have over certain characters, ahem. Maybe it's just me. I'm okay with that. :3
