Genre: Action, Comedy and Shounen
The story follows high school student Hotaru Tachibana, a girl disguised as a boy. Through strange circumstances she finds herself drawn into the world of survival games by a host, Masamune Matsuoka. The two form a team with ero-manga artist Tooru Yukimura and aim to be the best in Japan.
Status: Completed (12 Episodes)
Unfortunately, the plot is predictable and nothing new, but that doesn't mean it was bad. Even though it was predictable, it has been one of the most enjoyable as well. The plot is easy to follow and the main theme of the anime is what's unique. An anime that focuses on paintball survival? Count me in! I also felt that the anime was rushed which is understandable but it makes the story confusing at times. The comedy is there when it needs to be but it's nothing to go crazy for.
The characters is what kept me coming back to watch and finish the series. Hotaru is a very energetic, has a sense of justice and is a girl disguised as a guy (you'll understand this when you watch it). Then there's the captain of the survival team Masamune who is the typical cool guy in anime. He's also a "Host" for a club and loves survival games. Lastly, my favorite character, Yukimura. He's Masamune's childhood friend, quiet, shy, kinda anti-social and is a Ero-Manga writer. Ha! I certainly didn't expect that when I watched this.
The opening of Aoharu x Kikanjuu is great. Especially how the actual characters are actually singing the opening which makes the voice actors and opening even more enjoyable. If this were to be dubbed I think it wouldn’t be to the standard of the original voice actors and it would lose the essence the original has. During the scenes that unfolded during the anime, OST’s were played and they all absolutely fitted into the scene and mood.
-Reasons to Watch-
If you are a person who absolutely needs an amazing plot to watch an anime. This is not for you. Even though the plot is not deep or anything, it is still enjoyable. If you want a new theme for your anime collection, this one is a must. It delivers with the "Survival Games" themes and it doesn't disappoint. The characters are charming and as I mentioned above, the reason why I kept watching this anime. I won't say this is a must-watch anime but I do think it does deserve a chance. I haven't heard any bad criticisms from those who I have recommended this one. A soft-anime for those who just want to relax and watch anime instead of watching those plot heavy-animes. Perfect for a break.
I really mean it when I say "Give this one a chance". Who knows, Aoharu x Kikanjuu might become one of your most enjoyable animes from last spring season. I certainly ended enjoying it and still can't get enough of Yukimura! Hope You Enjoy!~
