I'll let you in on a not-so-secret - 'Fresh Off The Boat' is one of my favorite television shows. I've talked about it from time to time in a few of my cards, like the one where I talked about the show's series premiere at the San Diego Asian Film Festival and the other where I related it back to the everyday stories of most kids in immigrant families.
I'm not 100% caught up on the series right now, but I will say that i try to watch an episode whenever I find myself with some free time. It's like catching up with family friends - albeit these ones live in Florida, days away from anywhere I've lived before.
My favorite character is Jessica, and I think that, generally, she's the favorite of most fans. Why? Well, I don't think that's something I can sum up in a few short words.
She brings a hard dose of reality to the typical sitcom family.
Leave the happy-go-lucky sentiment to the Cleavers. Let's be real - being visited by relatives is a big pain in the ass sometimes. Sibling rivalry is not even close to where it ends. Let's not forget your cousins' shameless whine-bragging and your (obligatory) drunken uncle.
She knows all the ground rules to a perfect karaoke night.
Nothing is more annoying than a person who steals your song. One of the times I laughed the hardest during season 1 is when Jessica not-so-politely shoves Honey out of the way when her friend tries to move in on her block party Whitney Houston number.
Plus, the way she handles money is reminiscent of all moms.
If your mother didn't buy in bulk, make you finish your dinner plate, and insist on sewing or patching up every hole you got in your hand-me-downs, you haven't truly lived. When Jessica says "How much?", she might as well be saying "No."
She is equal parts maternal unit and bonafide hustler.
Moms don't mess around, and neither does Jessica. Not only will she find ways to earn a dollar, but she's always standing up for herself and her family. I love when she threatens to sue the school after Eddie gets in trouble for defending himself from racism. (Yasss, queen.)
She's not out to be someone that she's not.
Jessica doesn't really see eye-to-eye with the 'cool moms' in her neighborhood, especially coming from her own background and sense of what's right. She won't do something because everyone else is. She only does what's right for her or what she's inspired to do.
Do any of you watch 'Fresh Off The Boat' too? What's your favorite Jessica moment?
