Joe Maddon wins Manager of the Year

Not that this is terribly surprising, but it's newsworthy all the same:

Joe Maddon is the National League's Manager of the Year.

The Cubs went 97-65 this season, a year after going just 73-89. They made the playoffs via the Wild Card and progressed to the NLCS, where they were eventually swept by the Mets in four games.
Maddon's presence with the team certainly went a long, long way to turning things around for one of the league's most troubled franchises.

It's not all about Maddon, though - this Cubs team was nothing like the 2014 edition.

The emergence of young future (and even present) superstars like Kris Bryant and Kyle Schwarber turned this team on its head.
The youngsters, combined with amazing seasons by Anthony Rizzo and pitcher Jake Arrieta made the Cubs one of the most feared teams in the National League.
Many had them picked to win the World Series before they ran into the piping-hot Mets in the NLCS. They met an unstoppable force and couldn't pull it off, but had a great season nonetheless.
In a somewhat surprising move, the Mets' Terry Collins finished third in Manager of the Year voting behind Maddon and Mike Matheny of the Cardinals.

Sure, the Cardinals finished with the best record in baseball, but if you ask me, what Collins did as manager was more impressive than Matheny's work.

The Mets' head honcho took a minor league roster and guided them through a brutal first half of the season before picking up some huge mid-season acquisitions and turning on the style late in the season, reaching the World Series before falling to the Royals.
Sure, none of this actually matters, and I think most people pretty much agreed that Maddon would win Manager of the Year. Many probably picked Collins to finish second ahead of Matheny, but that's just making an argument for no reason.

So, there we have it baseball fans: Maddon, Matheny, Collins. Is this the right order? Would you have given the award to someone else?

Also, any updates on Cespedes?
@jeff4122 I seriously think the Cubs are the favorite to win the WS next season...let's wait and see!
Also, people expected Kris Bryant to be pretty good, but not this good. And Arrieta was just simply in beast mode.
I would've given it to Maddon. Who would've expected the Cubs to make it to the playoffs esepcially when they were in the same division as the Cards and Pirates!

Love It Or Hate It: Live Sporting Events?
Welcome to the Funny Community game, Love It Or Hate It! This game is really similar to Monday's 'No Good or So Good' food game - except this one deals a lot more with non-food things. Every week, I highlight a different thing that a lot of people either really love or really hate and see how our community feels overall! Last week, I asked you how you felt about SELFIE STICKS. It was an EXTREMELY tight vote, but out of the 60 who gave your opinion, 33 of you said that they're actually kind of useful! Soooo... SELFIE STICKS WIN!!!! This week, I want to know: How do you feel about attending live sports games? Spectator sports have been around since the days of Ancient Greece, but the ones we know and love today came into being in the mid 19th century! The number of Americans that attend at least one live sporting event annually is easily in the tens of millions. However, the amount of them that find said sporting event COMPLETELY BORING is still widely unknown. How do YOU feel about spectator sports? Are they tons of fun or brutally boring? Cubs eliminate Cardinals and move on to NLCS
It's a sad day in St. Louis. No, seriously. Cashiers at grocery stores work without smiles. The city is in a haze - you can almost taste it. This means a lot to St. Louisians. The Cardinals - owners of baseball's best record for virtually the entire season - were eliminated from the playoffs at the hands of the red-hot Chicago Cubs. What happened? The best team won, that's what happened. The truth is that the Cardinals were a gritty team all year, but without Yadier Molina and Carlos Martinez (their only true ace), who both got injured at the very end of the regular season, they were a team without real punch. The Cubs, on the other hand, look like they might be the best team in baseball. They dominated the Cards in four games, smacking an MLB record 9 home runs in a span of just two playoff games. This team hits the absolute lights out. With rookie phenoms Kyle Schwarber and Kris Bryant, not only are the Cubs crushing it now; they look like they're built for the future, too. Oh, yeah: winning in four games also means they get to get extra rest for the best pitcher in baseball. Also on the Cubs. With the Mets and Dodgers not playing until Thursday, Arrieta will get at least a few more days rest before being ready to go in Game 1 of the NLDS, regardless of who he faces. That's trouble for the opponent. I know I picked the Cubs to win the series before it started, but I didn't expect them to completely dominate like they did. They look scary good. I wouldn't want to face the Cubs right now. No matter who I am. I'm not sure they can be beaten - maybe this is finally their year? Or is it too soon to say? @christianmordi @mchlyang @ljk901023 @TessStevens @ButterflyBlu @superiorsl @Starbell808 @jokes @DonnaMelton @BEAUTYgirlARIEL @David19Flo23 @karencorchado @SamuelRodriguez @xitlalicordova1 @AndrewMaldonado @Shippudenguy21 @RosePark Can the Cubs really get it done?
Series preview: St. Louis Cardinals vs. Chicago Cubs
Here's a preview of the final NLDS Series, this one a Midwest showdown between the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals. Let's take a look. St. Louis Cardinals Season record: 100-62 Home record: 55-26 Away record: 45-36 Key players: Michael Wacha (SP), Matt Carpenter (3B), Jhonny Peralta (SS), Jason Heyward (RF) Key injuries: Carlos Martinez (SP), Yadier Molina (C) Projected starters: John Lackey, Jaime Garcia, Wacha, Lance Lynn, Lackey Here's what you need to know: The Cardinals are a team that seems to be engineered for October baseball year after year. They just do not stop. While the team has suffered countless injuries this season - including recent ones to huge players like their ace Martinez and captain Molina - you can never count them out. Rookie Steven Piscotty seems to get big hit after big hit and the Cards are just never out of it. They also have probably the best home crowd in the league and are tough to beat in St. Louis. Chicago Cubs Season record: 97-65 Home record: 49-32 Away record: 48-33 Key players: Jake Arrieta (SP), Kyle Schwarber (RF), Kris Bryant (3B), Anthony Rizzo (1B) Key injuries: None Projected starters: John Lester, Kyle Hendricks, Arrieta, Lester, Arrieta Here's what you need to know: Is this finally the year for the Cubs? Back to the Future II projected them to finally win it all in 2015 and it looks within the realm of possibility. After beating the Pirates in a heated Wild Card game, the Cubs have more momentum than any team in the league. Arrieta is on an absolutely wild run and should win NL Cy Young - he has been the best player in baseball over the past three months. Rookies Schwarber and Bryant are hitting the snot out of the ball. Watch out for these Cubbies. My projection: While the Cardinals were the best team in the league all year, in the playoffs it's all about pitching and momentum. The Cubs have the league's best pitcher and loads of momentum. While the Cardinals may be a grittier team with more experience, I think the Cubs are just better at this point. I'm taking the Cubs in 5 as an upset. What about you? @christianmordi @mchlyang @ljk901023 @TessStevens @ButterflyBlu @superiorsl @Starbell808 @jokes @DonnaMelton @BEAUTYgirlARIEL @David19Flo23 @karencorchado @SamuelRodriguez @xitlalicordova1 @AndrewMaldonado @Shippudenguy21 @RosePark

The Woman Who Struck Out Babe Ruth
And Lou Gehrig too. On April 2, 1931 the seventeen year-old Jackie Mitchell struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig back-to-back. They were arguably the deadliest hitting duo in baseball history, and she did it in only seven pitches. Which is pretty damn impressive. Less impressive is what happened afterwards. "They are too delicate. It would kill them to play ball every day." Ruth wasn't the most gracious in defeat (via), and some historians have dismissed the exhibition game as an April Fool's Prank. It's unlikely that Ruth would have been visibly upset if he struck out on purpose, nor would he have asked the umpire to inspect the ball. And a few days later, Mitchell's contract was voided on the basis that baseball was "too strenuous" for women. Yeah, beating some of the most famous players of all time sounds really strenuous. What if she broke a nail?! /sarcasm She kept playing anyway. So clearly the game wasn't TOO strenuous (she died in 1987 at the age of 74). She joined the amateur team House of David in 1933, and retired in 1937. Meanwhile, women weren't formally banned from the MLB until 1952, though unofficially they were often kept off the field. Such was the case for Eleanor Engle, who never took the field. The President of the minor leagues stated that no contract with a woman would be approved because โ€œnot in the best interest of baseball that such travesties be tolerated.โ€ In the 1970s girls were allowed to join Little League, in the 80s women joined college baseball, and in the 1990s, Ila Borders joined the St. Paul Saints of the independent Northern League. But no female player has reached the majors (yet). But the 100-year anniversary of the time a teenage girl struck out some of the toughest hitters in baseball history. Maybe it'll happen again in 2031?

A letter to the Mets' owners
Dear Fred and Jeff Wilpon, Please resign Yoenis Cespedes. This shouldn't be too much to ask. The team's payroll is currently somewhere just above $100,000,000. And I know that seems like a lot. Honestly speaking, it is. But relatively speaking, it isn't very much at all. It should be higher. This is a big team in a big market coming off a big year. Spend some money. Please, we're begging you. You made a great move last year by bringing Cespedes in right before the trade deadline. You restored faith in a franchise whose fans needed some love. We have been through a lot in the past decade (and before then, too), and you gave us some indication that you were ready to help this team win. And guess what? It almost paid off. Cespedes turned into a superstar and a fan favorite overnight and turned the Mets from an average team into a potentially great one. With the pitching that this team has in place for the next few years, it won't take that much to push them over the edge and make them legit World Series candidates. But we need a hitter. Bad. Cespedes is that guy. You don't have to sign him to a massive deal of 6 years for $150 million. I understand your hesitation there - he's aging, and can make some silly mistakes in the field. But 2 years for $50-60 million should not be too much to ask. Not for this team. Not in this market. Not with this kind of potential. You see, without Cespedes, the Mets are somewhere on the outside of the top 10 teams in the league, even with their pitching. Without Cespedes, they are a much worse team than the one that made the World Series last year. Without Cespedes, the aging David Wright and the second-year Michael Conforto will be relied on for too much. Without Cespedes, there is a gaping hole in the middle of this lineup. With Cespedes, though, this team is among the league's best. No question about it. He's still on the market, and we should have signed him a long time ago. But there is still time to make amends. You can still take advantage of the strange free agent market right now and make Cespedes the offer that he wants - rumors have it that he wants to be back in New York - and turn these Mets into not only a team that we love, but a team that we believe in. Give us something to believe in. We've waited long enough, and we know how good this team can be. Let's make it happen. Signed, A Hopeful Mets fan
Harvey misses team practice, "I screwed up"
The Mets are made the playoffs for the first time in nine years. Tickets are already sold out and Queens is getting ready to welcome back playoff baseball. But they are not off to a great start. Yesterday, Mets ace Matt Harvey missed a mandatory team workout at Citi Field. His excuse? TRAFFIC! Manager Terry Collins said Harvey will be fined for missing mandatory team practice. But he said Harvey will not miss any games and went on to say, "This is minor. This isn't college, where he's going to miss the first quarter of a football game. I'm going to take care of it in-house. I deal with it one way. The players deal with it another way. He's going to get fined. It's no big deal. He's going to continue to pitch. He f----- up. People do that. He feels bad. The players will take care of it on their own. We don't need it. We need to try to stay as positive as we can." Harvey also apologize for his actions and said, "Basically, there's no excuse. I screwed up. I wasn't here. I showed up a little late." The Mets and Harvey haven't been getting along too well especially after the stint they had with Scott Boras, his agent, last month when Boras requested they don't have Harvey pitch more than 180 innings. Personally, I don't really give a damm whether Harvey was stuck in traffic or not. I don't care what he was doing before that. Baseball is a team sport. And if you have a mandatory team practice, you should not miss it under any circumstances, especially if you are the ace and center of that team that is contending in the postseason for the first time in nine years! I am really interested to hear what @jeff4122 has to say. Are you going to defend your best pitcher for missing "mandatory team practice"?
