Joe Maddon wins Manager of the Year

Not that this is terribly surprising, but it's newsworthy all the same:

Joe Maddon is the National League's Manager of the Year.

The Cubs went 97-65 this season, a year after going just 73-89. They made the playoffs via the Wild Card and progressed to the NLCS, where they were eventually swept by the Mets in four games.
Maddon's presence with the team certainly went a long, long way to turning things around for one of the league's most troubled franchises.

It's not all about Maddon, though - this Cubs team was nothing like the 2014 edition.

The emergence of young future (and even present) superstars like Kris Bryant and Kyle Schwarber turned this team on its head.
The youngsters, combined with amazing seasons by Anthony Rizzo and pitcher Jake Arrieta made the Cubs one of the most feared teams in the National League.
Many had them picked to win the World Series before they ran into the piping-hot Mets in the NLCS. They met an unstoppable force and couldn't pull it off, but had a great season nonetheless.
In a somewhat surprising move, the Mets' Terry Collins finished third in Manager of the Year voting behind Maddon and Mike Matheny of the Cardinals.

Sure, the Cardinals finished with the best record in baseball, but if you ask me, what Collins did as manager was more impressive than Matheny's work.

The Mets' head honcho took a minor league roster and guided them through a brutal first half of the season before picking up some huge mid-season acquisitions and turning on the style late in the season, reaching the World Series before falling to the Royals.
Sure, none of this actually matters, and I think most people pretty much agreed that Maddon would win Manager of the Year. Many probably picked Collins to finish second ahead of Matheny, but that's just making an argument for no reason.

So, there we have it baseball fans: Maddon, Matheny, Collins. Is this the right order? Would you have given the award to someone else?

Also, any updates on Cespedes?
@jeff4122 I seriously think the Cubs are the favorite to win the WS next season...let's wait and see!
Also, people expected Kris Bryant to be pretty good, but not this good. And Arrieta was just simply in beast mode.
I would've given it to Maddon. Who would've expected the Cubs to make it to the playoffs esepcially when they were in the same division as the Cards and Pirates!

Series preview: St. Louis Cardinals vs. Chicago Cubs
Here's a preview of the final NLDS Series, this one a Midwest showdown between the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals. Let's take a look. St. Louis Cardinals Season record: 100-62 Home record: 55-26 Away record: 45-36 Key players: Michael Wacha (SP), Matt Carpenter (3B), Jhonny Peralta (SS), Jason Heyward (RF) Key injuries: Carlos Martinez (SP), Yadier Molina (C) Projected starters: John Lackey, Jaime Garcia, Wacha, Lance Lynn, Lackey Here's what you need to know: The Cardinals are a team that seems to be engineered for October baseball year after year. They just do not stop. While the team has suffered countless injuries this season - including recent ones to huge players like their ace Martinez and captain Molina - you can never count them out. Rookie Steven Piscotty seems to get big hit after big hit and the Cards are just never out of it. They also have probably the best home crowd in the league and are tough to beat in St. Louis. Chicago Cubs Season record: 97-65 Home record: 49-32 Away record: 48-33 Key players: Jake Arrieta (SP), Kyle Schwarber (RF), Kris Bryant (3B), Anthony Rizzo (1B) Key injuries: None Projected starters: John Lester, Kyle Hendricks, Arrieta, Lester, Arrieta Here's what you need to know: Is this finally the year for the Cubs? Back to the Future II projected them to finally win it all in 2015 and it looks within the realm of possibility. After beating the Pirates in a heated Wild Card game, the Cubs have more momentum than any team in the league. Arrieta is on an absolutely wild run and should win NL Cy Young - he has been the best player in baseball over the past three months. Rookies Schwarber and Bryant are hitting the snot out of the ball. Watch out for these Cubbies. My projection: While the Cardinals were the best team in the league all year, in the playoffs it's all about pitching and momentum. The Cubs have the league's best pitcher and loads of momentum. While the Cardinals may be a grittier team with more experience, I think the Cubs are just better at this point. I'm taking the Cubs in 5 as an upset. MLB Top Plays of the Day (09/13/15)
Here are your Top 5 Plays of the Day! 5. Jason Heyward (St. Louis Cardinals) The Cardinals' nightmare has finally come to an end. Cards' defense was exceptional today with Yadier Molina throwing out NL basestealing leader Billy Hamilton. But the MVP goes to Heyward for snagging Ivan De Jesus Jr.'s home run especially when the game was still in doubt. Heyward learned his lesson on Saturday when Adam Duvall's two run homer bounced off the top of the wall. The Cardinals beat the Reds 9-2. 4. Khris Davis (Milwaukee Brewers) If only the Brewers have won, this guy would have been the Man of the Match. Khris Davis robbed a homer from Francisco Cervelli and kept his team going. He not only robbed that homer, he blasted a two-run homer the next inning to keep the Brewers alive. Despite an amazing performance both defensively and offensivley by Davis, the Brewers lose to the Pirates 7-6 in the 11th inning. 3. Brian Bogusevic (Philadelphia Phillies) The Phillies' right fielder, Brian Bogusevic, and his fully extended diving catch robbed Dexter Fowler's potential double. You could see starting pitcher, Aaron Harang, show his appreciation with an air-five! With Bogusevic's amazing play, the Chicago Cubs lost to the Phillies (the worst team in the MLB) 7-4. 2. Lonnie Chisenhall (Cleveland Indians) The Indians' Right Fielder made this impressive play in deep right field. It was an all out diving effort all the way to the warning track and stole a possible double, or even a triple away from Rajai Davis. Despite Justin Verlander starting for the Tigers' mound, Detroit lost to the Tribe 7-2. 1. Brandon Barnes (Colorado Rockies) And the number one play from last night's games come from Brandon Barnes of the Colorado Rockies. The Rockies' left fielder not only made a phenomenal play, he made that play into a double play. This was the game-winner for the Rockies as they topped the Seattle Mariners 3-2. Barnes said he felt a bit dizzy after he slammed his head into the ground but he kept his focus to sling the ball to first and throw out Ketel Marte. Now that was your Top 5 Plays of the Day from last night's games! To my sports fans...
I said this in a previous card, but I want you all to know that I don't think I'm going to be able to be on Vingle as much, at least for now. I am in my last semester of college right now and really need to focus on my studies as I finish my degree... plus... you know... that job search that everyone talks about! I've had so much fun being involved with all of you over the past few months through the MLB playoffs (how great were those Mets!?!?), EPL and NFL seasons - culminating with the Super Bowl next week! I know this community can be an amazing resource for everyone and I hope you all continue to share ideas, thoughts, favorite plays and players and games and everything else that I've seen go on here recently. You guys are the best! Thanks for reading and commenting on my posts!
