Nicki Minaj channeled her inner Maya Angelou last night, as she offered her own rendition of Maya Angelou’s 1978 poem Still I Rise, on Wednesday night in Los Angeles’s Shrine auditorium.
The event was titled Shining a Light: A Concert for Progress on Race in America. The concert benefit, (which was presented by A&E) focused on addressing ongoing racial conflicts in the country and raise money for the nonprofit organization, United Way Worldwide.
Dressed in a fitted and shimmery black and gold dress, the rapper’s rendition of the poem – which was also the title of a volume of Angelou’s work – caused the crowd to cheer after reciting the following verse:
“Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I’ve got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?”
