Nicki Minaj channeled her inner Maya Angelou last night, as she offered her own rendition of Maya Angelou’s 1978 poem Still I Rise, on Wednesday night in Los Angeles’s Shrine auditorium.
The event was titled Shining a Light: A Concert for Progress on Race in America. The concert benefit, (which was presented by A&E) focused on addressing ongoing racial conflicts in the country and raise money for the nonprofit organization, United Way Worldwide.
Dressed in a fitted and shimmery black and gold dress, the rapper’s rendition of the poem – which was also the title of a volume of Angelou’s work – caused the crowd to cheer after reciting the following verse:
“Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I’ve got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?”

Maya Angelou would have been proud of your performance tonight, Nicki. Great work.

Beautiful! Yay Nicki!!
Maya Angelou is one of my favorite ladies of all time. Happy to see her work in pop culture :D props to Nicki!
