I saw this movie by chance on an airplane, and since Lee Jong Suk was in it, I decided to give it a try!
So first I thought it was going to be all Jong Suk eye candy and smooth sailing for 2 hours...
And yes, there was plenty of eye candy...
I was actually learning a lot about ancient Korean court culture, and was having a good time, until they started to hit me with feelings.
Like, tragedy and loss and sadness and betrayal.
LOOK AT THIS ANGEL CRYING. THIS ISN'T WHAT I SIGNED UP FOR.
So now I'm stuck on an airplane sobbing (probably scaring the person sitting next to me) and yet, I continued to watch the movie.
Basically, the plot follows a man who studies physiognomy, aka he has the ability to know a lot about a person simply based on the characteristics of their face.
He is so talented that he is brought to the royal court, but because of political struggles he finds himself in the middle of a potential war breaking out.
The face reader's son, Lee Jong Suk's character, is trying to become a scholar to help his family out of the poorer classes (his ancestors were shamed at one point so they lost their social standing) so the king somewhat uses Lee Jong Suk as a way to keep the face reader at court - or else he'll ruin Jong Suk's chances.
From there is gets messy and scary and complicated but it is DEFINITELY worth the watch!
