Is Spirit Albarn really that bad?

Hello everyone! This is my second card in the "defending anime" series and today we're looking at Spirit Albarn aka Death Scythe from Soul Eater. This one is a little different as I won't be looking at what the audience thinks of him but yet a certain character. As far a my understanding goes, besides a few feminist (no offense if you are one), no one really dislikes Spirit; although I could be way wrong.
Regardless, I'm mostly talking about his Daughter, Maka Albarn and her feelings towards him.
When she was younger Maka and her dad, Spirit seemed to have a close relationship. Unfortunately that all changed when Maka caught Spirit cheating on her mom.
Now I'm not condoning what spirit did and what he continues to do; cheating is wrong and as someone who has been cheated on I'll tell you it's not fun. So he's not the greatest guy in the world but I'll tell you something he is good at and that's being a dad.
You might find me out of line on this one but I got to state the facts and the facts are that Maka's mother is not around; the only thing we know is that she's off around the world. Now Maka holds her in high regard and looks up to her. No doubt that when Maka was young her mother was an incredible women but now she's not even there and her father is but yet her father is the bad guy. Occasionally her mother will send a post card from wherever she last was so she's not completely out of the picture but does that really put her over Spirit?
Now Spirit Albarn is no saint and is not the perfect father but he does care for his daughter and in my opinion deserves better from her.

What do you all think? Do you agree? Am I way out of line or off base? Is there a character you want me to defend?

Let me know in the comments. Thanks for reading and have a great day!

@TylerDurso We agreed that even though Spirit made is mistakes, he's a darn good dad and really cares about Maka much more than some dads do.
@ShinigamiSan good on ya mate.
@ShinigamiSan strange how life works sometimes. How'd that go?
I actually had a conversation yesterday with someone that went something like this.
