This festival is dated back from the Heian period (794-1185) hence the costume is from that period too. This costume is called junihitoe, the predecessor of today's kimono. It literally means 12-layer robe but usually more are worn in formal occasion. The whole set can weight around 40Ibs o_O. I'm in love with junihitoe so I gotta snapped this picture. Back in the day, the priestess was selected from one of the princesses of the royal family and went through cleansing ritual before she goes to some big name shrine of which she was assigned to be the Grand priestess
