This was definitely an interview worth having.
I had the pleasure of getting to know curator and designer of Tikedi, Ti-Asia Dickenson. If you're not familiar with the shred-a-licious brand, what are you waiting for? Her pieces are absolutely amazing and let's not forget to add, trendy. I've been a huge fan of Tikedi for quite a few years now and I was so pleased when Ti-Asia accepted my offer to do a brief interview on her amazing pieces.
Ti-Asia was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York and currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia. She graduated college in 2012 and in that same year, nearly 4 years ago, her vision came to life when she launched her brand and business, Tikedi. She has had huge names in the curvy blogging community such as Nadia Alboulhosn to huge names in the entertainment business such as T-Boz from TLC rock her threads. She's a busy woman, but in her spare time she enjoys cuddling under the covers watching her favorite shows, working on her graphic design business and helping out with her sister's business. If you're enjoying learning at Ti so far and want to know me, keep scrolling to get inside her head.
Q: How long have you been into fashion and designing?
A: I’ve always been into fashion, I just went from a little girl that dabbled in her cousins closet to a woman with her own sense of style. As I have gotten older I’ve learned to notice and appreciate all the ideas, stories, details, etc. that goes into designing and the fashion industry. But once again officially since 2007.
Q: Where or who do you get most of your inspiration from?
A: I definitely get most of my inspiration from the street. Growing up in New York has always been a melting pot of looks. My mom helped with that as well because shes all about self expression and creating your look.
Q: What’s the backstory on your clothing line Tikedi?
A: Well TiKeDi came about I want to say around 2010 or 2011. In the blogging community shredding was really big and there was an endless amount of DIY tutorials on how to achieve the look. I created a piece, posted about it and got inquiries and others wanting me to create one for them. Fast forward a few months later, I had gotten laid off from my job and needed a way to bring in income and tada TiKeDi was born. Courtney Clark of The Style Playlist helped me promote it via the blogosphere and I just said a prayer and hoped it paid off.
Q: If you could give one fashion tip to beginners, what would it be?
A: If I could give one fashion tip it would be to stay true to who you are. It is so easy to be influenced by everything that’s going on outside of yourself and your space but it can really take away from your being and essence. And honestly, I feel like when it comes to fashion and style for each individual different things work for different people and that’s what make you, you or other people take notice to what you do and how you do it.
Q: Must have fashion item for the fall?
A: Moto jacket and fur/faux fur.
Q: Favorite Designer?
A: Alexander Wang and Pucci.
Q: A leather jacket or an amazing pair of booties?
A: Always a leather jacket. I dieee for a good jacket.
Q: One word to describe your taste in fashion.
Q: Favorite Tikedi item?
A: The Adisa cardigan. When thinking of this piece, I imagined I was Pam Grier somewhere in Jamaica on a porch lounging.
Q: Favorite clothing brand?
A: TiKeDi of course.
Q: What’s one thing you would tell up and coming entrepreneurs?
A: It’s not easy. I don’t say this to deter them, I say this so they can get it out of their heads that everything will be 1,2,3. There are definite highs and definite lows, you will want to quit more than succeed but there are those moments that happen once every 4 months and you remember why you’re doing it and all the heartache is worth it.
Q: Name one fashion faux pa that drives you crazy.
A: Glasses indoors.. this drives me up the wall!
Q: Fashion tip you live by?
A: Comfort. You got to be comfortable in what you’re in to own it.
Q: What can we expect from Tikedi in the future?
It's been a pleasure Ti.
