Fun thing about shooting photos of beautifully sculpted and painted models/replicas - you only need a little imagination, patience, and a lens with a really big maximum aperture to capture images that could be right out of a movie.
The Kotobukiya Avengers Iron Man Mark VII ArtFX Statue is a beautifully rendered foot-tall (1/6th scale) replica of the Iron Man Mark VII armor worn by Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) in the first Avengers film. It comes in 5 pieces you have to assemble - which is extremely easy. Built into the statue are 3 LED lights and a power switch to turn them on and off. They have two brightness levels. Obviously his eyes and chest "reactor" light up.
To shoot photos like these having a lens with a very fast aperture (low aperture number such as 1.4, 1.8, 2, or 2.8) is a must. I shot these images with a Nikon 85mm f/1.4G AF-S series lens. Having the ability to limit DOF (depth of field) helps take the otherwise unrealistic background setting (which are normal scale and far too large to allow you to present the model as anything BUT a model) and make everything a blur of colors and shapes. For instance, the fireplace behind the statue in the photo above goes from being a fire in a fireplace to being a tank or other vehicle on fire.
ABOVE - I placed the statue on my coffee table and put X-Men II on my TV in the background. Now Cyclops's plasma blast turns into some other particle beam or light source behind Iron Man. The main thing is that you couldn't tell that the background light and shape patterns are from a TV.
ABOVE - More fireplace shots. BELOW - More TV background shots.
BELOW - A shot in my kitchen with just general kitchen stuff in the background.
BELOW - Another fireplace shot - this time over the shoulder.
BELOW - And lastly, being surrounded (literally) by my giant house leopard. :D Zeph had to join the fun!
I want to thank Vingle for making such a cool statue available in a contest. And I especially want to thank @shannonl5 for her amazing energy, dedication, and leadership as the moderator for the Vingle Marvel Community. Everyone who participates does so with sincere appreciation for the Marvel Universe and the love of the characters and stories therein. You all are AWESOME! <3
Stunning pictures as usual! I'm actually really jealous right now. As for the last photo, I couldn't help it ... Iron Man: "Is it better to be feared or respected? I say, is it too much to ask for both?" Cat: Get over it.
Oh gosh the last image with the cat in it is amazing! you could make a miniseries of this guy!
Dude, those were some pretty creative lightsource ideas, especially considering you're going for the whole comic book action movie look. It keeps tricking my eye and making him look full-sized, hahaha. ALSO HI, ZEPH. <3
incredible pictures!!!
