EPL Matchday 16: What we learned

After a great weekend of EPL action, let's step back and see what this week taught us.

Watford may be here to stay

A team that most expected to go right back down to the Championship at the end of this season, Watford have surprised many and have somehow climbed up to 7th in the table with a win over Sunderland. Sure, beating Sunderland is nothing overly impressive, but their 7 wins from 16 matches is a good haul and it looks like they could establish themselves in this division.

Liverpool continue their inconsistent form

In a wild match, Liverpool clawed back with a late, late goal to earn a point in a 2-2 draw with West Brom. Keeper Simon Mignolet will take a lot of the blame as he allowed as soft a goal as you'll see. But a deflected long-rage effort from Divock Origi gave Liverpool the point and Klopp will be happy to take something. Liverpool sit in 9th and need to put together a good run in the Christmas season.

Palace are legit European contenders

Form, and Palace have plenty of it. They climb to 6 with a win over Southampton and are flying high. Their defense is amongst the best in the league as they've allowed just 15 goals in 16 matches. Alan Pardew has the Eagles playing a great brand of football and they deserve their place in the business end of the table.

United in crisis

Uh oh. A 2-1 loss to Bournemouth has United officially in crisis following their Champions League exit. While they still sit in 4th, they have been unconvincing all season and something is going to have to start changing. Manager Louis van Gaal will begin taking some real fire unless the results change. At the moment, this is not a good football team, plain and simple.

Did you watch any of the matches this week? What do you think?

And I've officially given up hope for a spot in next season's UEFA Champions League match for Chelsea....
@jeff4122 i know...crazy
@InPlainSight Townsend is a truly forgotten man
hahah @InPlainSight congrats on that. Ayoze has been lots of fun to watch but i fear that you may be right, they may have to sell
We learned that Ayoze Perez's snapshot can steal a bonus 2 points at White Hart Lane. Shame he'll be playing for them by the end of January.

EPL Match of the Week: ARSENAL vs. Chelsea
This week we've got a real gem to look forward to as Chelsea face Arsenal at the Emirates in the EPL. Here's how it all looks to me: Arsenal This could be the return to action for winger Alexis Sanchez, who has been out with injury since November. Arsenal have been playing great football even without him, but when he's healthy he can be easily one of the best players in the league. He can be a huge boost for an Arsenal team attempting to mount a major title challenge and fight off tough competition from Leicester City, Man City and Spurs. Their defense has been really solid with the emerging Hector Bellerin, while the midfield has the strings pulled by Mesut Ozil, who continues to prove that he is one of the best in the whole world. He leads the league in assists and is a real joy to watch. Chelsea We all know about Chelsea's struggles this season. They have been better since Guus Hiddink took over as manager, but still sit in 14th place. For me, a large part of their struggles comes down to the horrible form of Eden Hazard, who has completely failed to live up to the expectations he set for himself during last seasons' PFA Player of the Year winning campaign. He needs to be better, and if he is, Chelsea can mount a challenge toward the upper end of the table. Champions League football is out of the question, but they can still challenge for Europe and it may well start with a big match against Arsenal this weekend. My pick Chelsea have been looking better, but Arsenal are the best team in the league getting their best player back from injury. For me, that settles it. Arsenal 2, Chelsea 1. [Discussion] Pick a player for your EPL team
With the January transfer window open, it's time for EPL fans to start dreaming of how their teams can improve as they embark on the 2nd half of the season. And what are sports for if not an outlet for our imaginations? I love crazy transfer scenarios and I think it's well within our rights as fans to dream up something far-fetched. Crystal Palace need help, there's no question about it. While they have had an amazing season to this point, they could be doing even better if they had a real striker to get them some goals. Connor Wickham was their signing at the summer, but he has been injured. When he's been healthy, he has worked hard and played well but hasn't been good at getting on the scoresheet. A hard worker, but not a goal scorer. The other strikers on the squad have similar problems. Dwight Gayle comes up with the very occasional super-sub appearance, but cannot be relied on. Marouane Chamakh is not someone to get excited about, and nor is Frazier Campbell. Simply put, Palace need a striker. What about QPR's Charlie Austin? Austin had a monstruous season last year, single-handedly making QPR a team worth watching. While he couldn't do quite enough to keep Rangers up in the EPL - the team got relegated - his season made him a favorite for many. I was shocked to see him stay at QPR once they got relegated, as I am sure that he has the quality to be a good EPL striker. He could be tempted by a team that is doing extremely well - punching above their weight, maybe - and in desperate need for a player just like him. Austin isn't the most creative player, but Palace have plenty of creativity in Yannick Bolasie, Wilf Zaha and Yohan Cabaye. What they need is an out-and-out striker, a target man, and Charlie Austin is just that. I think it's the perfect match. A player too good for the second division meets a team in the first division desperate for someone with his attributes. This could be the move that spurs Palace to that top-6 finish that they are dreaming of. What do you think? Who would you like to see your team sign in the transfer window? @InPlainSight @AbdulrahmanSaad @trinityarcangel @thefeels @MarcusJiles @DerekGumtow @havic @yaakattackk @bnzatton @SherzTYCi @krishntejanand @addri @mishthi @andwas @NimishMathur @Sydsocquet @starli @kyleatekwana @BenjiPhilip @Eduardo14 @AshfakEjaaz @EmanueleYagoda
United escape with a win
Manchester United got the weekend of EPL football underway with a tight win over Watford on early Saturday morning. Despite being on the road, this was a match that United really needed to win, and they came out firing from the first minute. Manager Louis van Gaal went with an attacking formation as youngster Jesse Lingard got another start for the Red Devils against lowly Watford. Major signing Memphis Depay got the scoring started in the 11th minute and is hoping to answer some of the people who think he was a waste of money after a difficult start to live in Manchester but this was a big performance for the Dutch winger. Troy Deeney scored a late penalty for Watford to equalize - he tied it up in the 87th minute - before conceding an own goal in added time that gave United the win. It was a gusty performance from Watford, who seem to put in a decent showing each week but are struggling to come up with results. It's always difficult for new teams in the EPL and Watford are feeling the effects of the increased quality in a major way. It wasn't all good for United, though, as midfielder Ander Herrera limped off the pitch in the first half with an injury. Definitely one of the more underrated players in the league, Herrera was just recovering from a different injury and had made his way back into the first team for the first time in a few weeks today so he'll be upset to have another spell on the sidelines. All in all, a good win for United, as they move to first in the table over their rivals City. City have a game in hand but United can only be thrilled with their performance and especially the result. They'll be hoping City drop points today against Liverpool to maintain the top spot. Anyone see the match today? @InPlainSight @AbdulrahmanSaad @trinityarcangel @thefeels @MarcusJiles @DerekGumtow @havic @yaakattackk @bnzatton @SherzTYCi @krishntejanand @addri @mishthi @andwas @NimishMathur @Sydsocquet @starli
To my sports fans...
I said this in a previous card, but I want you all to know that I don't think I'm going to be able to be on Vingle as much, at least for now. I am in my last semester of college right now and really need to focus on my studies as I finish my degree... plus... you know... that job search that everyone talks about! I've had so much fun being involved with all of you over the past few months through the MLB playoffs (how great were those Mets!?!?), EPL and NFL seasons - culminating with the Super Bowl next week! I know this community can be an amazing resource for everyone and I hope you all continue to share ideas, thoughts, favorite plays and players and games and everything else that I've seen go on here recently. You guys are the best! Thanks for reading and commenting on my posts! For now, farewell! @InPlainSight @AbdulrahmanSaad @trinityarcangel @thefeels @MarcusJiles @DerekGumtow @havic @yaakattackk @bnzatton @SherzTYCi @krishntejanand @addri @mishthi @andwas @NimishMathur @Sydsocquet @starli @kyleatekwana @BenjiPhilip @Eduardo14 @AshfakEjaaz @EmanueleYagoda @Bobs @mchlyang @christianmordi @Starbell808 @karencorchado @BrookieyElba @ValerieAlissaPa @Link4TW @sanazsanaz @TravisBeck @Shippudenguy21 @gatorchick96 @MatthewBoughton @MarcusJiles @BrandonMcNeil @KyleBerke @DerekGumtow @havic @Straightshooter @yaakattackk @RodneyYoung @DreJones @JonathanKerns @TravisManning @GalacticChakra @smothgreen @afxs @johnnolastname @ChristopherKenn @ChasePage @coreywriley91 @MrTenThirty @JasonNilsson @addri @ChrisStephens @AniBreo @VeronicaArtino @TomasVasquez @oct6eg10 @Darlin972 @ALEXCAMACHO @GabrielaAlvarez @strawhatblakley @Silver925 @RyanGraham96 @brolyxxrborn @martinesquivel @TiffanyPerez @PASCUASIO @ShoMoPayton @mackenzieorr186 @EvanYannetti @RaulGamboa @in4mtoxic006 @PaulFotiadis @sanRico @BlakeKaler @lilleonz @misterE @shagnasty360 @Bobs @CheyenneHorton @TylerDurso @ChrisSantiago @ButterflyBlu @superiorsl @Starbell808 @DonnaMelton @jokes @BEAUTYgirlARIEL @David19Flo23 @karencorchado @SamuelRodriguez @xitlalicordova1 @AndrewMaldonado @Link4TW @DannyMoses @ClaySharko @Ravenwing92 @FromBlue2U @LemissaNicole @BossDominata @MalikLawary @KyleBerke @DerekGumtow @Straightshooter @Kirooken @TravisManning @GalacticChakra @ChristopherKenn @MrTenThirty @JasonNilsson @addri @GinnaL13 @VeronicaArtino @TomasVasquez @GingerMJones @starli @strawhatblakley @FernandaMontalv @jgallegos222 @DennieySnyder @PaulFotiadis @misterE @Bobs @CheyenneHorton @TylerDurso
