Tonight, at 11:49 EST, the Winter Solstice will begin. Tomorrow, many will celebrate the first day of winter with feasts and family gatherings and gift-giving, just as others do when they celebrate Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, or any of the other many holidays that are celebrated at this time of year. Traditionally, winter was a time when communities had to band together to make it through the harsh cold. Feasting and gift-giving provided bonding opportunities and brought the people of communities closer together (as much of the rest of the year was spent planting, growing, harvesting, and preparing, which gave little time for such leisurely activities). I appreciate Vingle so much, for the positive sense of community it provides. And so, I would like to send everyone warm wishes this season!
