Suarez apologises for Ivanovic 'bite

(CNN) -- Luis Suarez illustrated why he is one of the world's most controversial soccer players on Sunday as he appeared to bite an opponent before going on to save his club from defeat with a last-gasp goal. The Liverpool star showed his best and worst sides in a controversial 2-2 draw with Chelsea, and he potentially faces another long suspension after his assault on Branislav Ivanovic. Suarez, the English Premier League's top scorer, wrestled with the Chelsea defender and then clearly sank his teeth into the Serbian's arm. The incident was not seen by referee Kevin Friend, who shrugged off Ivanovic's angry protestations. Suarez later apologized on his Twitter account -- he has been "I'm sad for what happened this afternoon, I apologize Ivanovic and all football world for my inexcusable behavior. I'm so sorry about it!!" wrote Suarez. Among his Twitter followers is former boxing champion Mike Tyson, who infamously bit off part of an opponent's ear in 1997. It is not the first time Suarez has bitten an opponent -- he was suspended for seven matches in late 2010 after an incident while playing for Dutch club Ajax, two months before joining Liverpool.

What's with the Chinese football league?
There's something strange happening in the football world right now. Even with all the money and appeal that the world's top leagues bring - the EPL, La Liga, Germany's Bundesliga, France's Ligue 1 and Italy's Serie A, some top players have recently departed their clubs and gone to accept enormous contracts in the Chinese Super League. The latest star to make the move is Chelsea's Ramires, a player at the peak of his career at age 28. I'm stunned. There is a history of great players making the move to China, but in the past it has been players at the very tail end of their careers moving across the world to make huge amounts of money before they retire. Think Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka, who in recent years went to Shanghai to play. And I understand the appeal for an aging player. Someone like Drogba couldn't keep up with the pace of the top European leagues anymore, but could still be a huge star in China, where the league quality is extremely low. They are major marketing moves for the Chinese teams too, who can bring in world superstars to boost their image. But recently, the players making the move have not been aging stars. They are players in the prime of their careers, like Chelsea's Ramires. Other players to recently make the move are Roma's Gervinho (formerly of Arsenal), who is just 28 years old and Colombia and Inter Milan's Freddy Guarin, a young midfielder of enormous quality and potential. He has been on the radar of the top EPL clubs for years, and to see him turn them down in exchange for a move to the low-level China league is shocking. Alessandro Diamanti, Momo Sissokho, Demba Ba and Paulinho are other players who have recently moved from their European clubs to play in China under huge contracts. It's a bizarre phenomenon. Football in China is not known to be a very popular sport, but the Chinese owners have loads of money and are doing a good job convincing top players to come and join them. I'm sad to see exciting players like Ramires and Gervinho leave Europe, where I could watch them in the Champions League, but I'm fascinated to see what they will make of themselves in China, and to follow along to see if the Chinese league continues to pry away great talent from Europe. @InPlainSight @AbdulrahmanSaad @trinityarcangel @thefeels @MarcusJiles @DerekGumtow @havic @yaakattackk @bnzatton @SherzTYCi @krishntejanand @addri @mishthi @andwas @NimishMathur @Sydsocquet @starli @kyleatekwana @BenjiPhilip @Eduardo14 @AshfakEjaaz @EmanueleYagoda @Bobs What do you make of this recent trend?
EPL Match of the Week: ARSENAL vs. Chelsea
This week we've got a real gem to look forward to as Chelsea face Arsenal at the Emirates in the EPL. Here's how it all looks to me: Arsenal This could be the return to action for winger Alexis Sanchez, who has been out with injury since November. Arsenal have been playing great football even without him, but when he's healthy he can be easily one of the best players in the league. He can be a huge boost for an Arsenal team attempting to mount a major title challenge and fight off tough competition from Leicester City, Man City and Spurs. Their defense has been really solid with the emerging Hector Bellerin, while the midfield has the strings pulled by Mesut Ozil, who continues to prove that he is one of the best in the whole world. He leads the league in assists and is a real joy to watch. Chelsea We all know about Chelsea's struggles this season. They have been better since Guus Hiddink took over as manager, but still sit in 14th place. For me, a large part of their struggles comes down to the horrible form of Eden Hazard, who has completely failed to live up to the expectations he set for himself during last seasons' PFA Player of the Year winning campaign. He needs to be better, and if he is, Chelsea can mount a challenge toward the upper end of the table. Champions League football is out of the question, but they can still challenge for Europe and it may well start with a big match against Arsenal this weekend. My pick Chelsea have been looking better, but Arsenal are the best team in the league getting their best player back from injury. For me, that settles it. Arsenal 2, Chelsea 1. [Discussion] EPL's most UNDERrated player?
So after we talked about the most overrated players yesterday, it only makes sense to do the opposite today! Who are the most underrated players in the EPL? Riyad Mahrez - Leicester City While teammate Jamie Vardy gets lots of the headlines for his goal scoring, Mahrez has been an absolute standout for Leicester this season. He's turned in great performance after great performance and has even added to his game with some goals. He definitely deserves more credit. Yannick Bolasie - Crystal Palace You knew I had to include a Palace player on the list! At his best, Bolasie is an absolute terror down the wing or through the middle. He has pace and strength like any player in the league and just needs to round out his goalscoring form to make his game complete. He nearly made a big money move to Spurs over the summer but Palace held onto him, and with his form this season they'll be happy they did. Jack Butland - Stoke City While Butland is beginning to accumulate some accolades for his play this season in net for Stoke, it's time we start considering him one of the league's best keepers. He's got a little while to go before he unseats Joe Hart as England's #1, but it looks like the future of English goalkeeping is in safe hands with Butland's talent. Philippe Coutinho - Liverpool Sure, everyone knows that Coutinho is a great player, but I don't think he gets nearly enough credit for what he does for Liverpool. His work rate is off the charts and he has come up with some truly ridiculous goals to go along with amazing assists over the past few seasons. For my money, he's as good as attacking midfielders come in the Premiership. Romelu Lukaku - Everton Lukaku is a player whose stock has gone from way up to way down and now he's flying high again. After being a highly touted Chelsea youth product, Mourinho sold him away to Everton. He struggled for the Toffees at first but has come up with the best form of his career this season. At just 22 years old, the Belgian has a huge future ahead of him. I'm going with Coutinho as my choice. The man simply cannot be stopped and does not get enough credit! Who do you think? @InPlainSight @AbdulrahmanSaad @trinityarcangel @thefeels @MarcusJiles @DerekGumtow @havic @yaakattackk @bnzatton @SherzTYCi @krishntejanand @addri @mishthi @andwas @NimishMathur @Sydsocquet @starli @kyleatekwana @BenjiPhilip @Eduardo14 @AshfakEjaaz @EmanueleYagoda
EPL Matchday 16: What we learned
After a great weekend of EPL action, let's step back and see what this week taught us. Watford may be here to stay A team that most expected to go right back down to the Championship at the end of this season, Watford have surprised many and have somehow climbed up to 7th in the table with a win over Sunderland. Sure, beating Sunderland is nothing overly impressive, but their 7 wins from 16 matches is a good haul and it looks like they could establish themselves in this division. Liverpool continue their inconsistent form In a wild match, Liverpool clawed back with a late, late goal to earn a point in a 2-2 draw with West Brom. Keeper Simon Mignolet will take a lot of the blame as he allowed as soft a goal as you'll see. But a deflected long-rage effort from Divock Origi gave Liverpool the point and Klopp will be happy to take something. Liverpool sit in 9th and need to put together a good run in the Christmas season. Palace are legit European contenders Form, and Palace have plenty of it. They climb to 6 with a win over Southampton and are flying high. Their defense is amongst the best in the league as they've allowed just 15 goals in 16 matches. Alan Pardew has the Eagles playing a great brand of football and they deserve their place in the business end of the table. United in crisis Uh oh. A 2-1 loss to Bournemouth has United officially in crisis following their Champions League exit. While they still sit in 4th, they have been unconvincing all season and something is going to have to start changing. Manager Louis van Gaal will begin taking some real fire unless the results change. At the moment, this is not a good football team, plain and simple. Did you watch any of the matches this week? To my sports fans...
I said this in a previous card, but I want you all to know that I don't think I'm going to be able to be on Vingle as much, at least for now. I am in my last semester of college right now and really need to focus on my studies as I finish my degree... plus... you know... that job search that everyone talks about! I've had so much fun being involved with all of you over the past few months through the MLB playoffs (how great were those Mets!?!?), EPL and NFL seasons - culminating with the Super Bowl next week! I know this community can be an amazing resource for everyone and I hope you all continue to share ideas, thoughts, favorite plays and players and games and everything else that I've seen go on here recently. You guys are the best! Thanks for reading and commenting on my posts!
