Ah, the noble Treasure Hunter.
A class of hero (or even enti-hero) made most popular by our old friend and eternal adventuring inspiration, Johnny Quest.
Or Indiana Jones, I guess. He's cool too. Jones doesn't have a badass turtleneck, though. Either way, whichever adventurer you choose as the inspiration for all that came afterward, you understand what it takes to make one: an indomitable spirit and the thirst for adventure combined with a lust for uncovering something brand new.
Video gaming has seen it's share of adventurers, but there are two who sit at the top of the adventuring pyramid. You know them, these iconic characters who are most often covered in dirt and being shot at by hostile forces in dimly-lit, dank ancient ruins.
There are two iconic adventurers at the front of the genre right now. So let's see who beats who:
Lara Croft or Nathan Drake
Lara is a long-time adventurer and raider of tombs, first introduced to audiences in 1996 in her debut game Tomb Raider.
Over the years we've seen Lara in a bunch of different iterations across several platform generations, the most recent of which, Rise of the Tomb Raider, just came out a few months ago.
In every iteration, Lara is a force to be reckoned with. She is athletic, she is determined, she can take a hit. She is competent with a firearm and she is a capable hand-to-hand fighter. She is clever and quick on her feet, too, being able to solve daunting puzzles on the fly and avoid lethal traps. She is also highly inventive, cobbling together makeshift weapons as the need arises.
Compared to Lara Croft, Nathan Drake is a relative newcomer. First appearing in Uncharted: Drake Fortune in 2007, Drake burst out onto the Playstation scene as an early favorite for the console.
Over his series of games, we've seen Drake through a handful of heart rate-heightening adventures, whether he's fighting his way through an old ruin filled with venomous scarab bettles to battling his way up a moving train.
Similar to Lara, Drake is competent with a firearm and quick on his feet, acting quickly in life-or-death situations in order to escape by the nape of his neck. He has shown some significant endurance, able to pull himself up a train hanging off of a cliff edge despite being severely weakened. Drake is a risk-taker and often puts his life in harm's way in pursuit of his treasure-seeking goals.
