Braids been here for years... However they are becoming more popular again.
Growing up in Bushwick, Brooklyn with a mother that is very skilled at doing hair my sisters and I had the freshest cornrows ever. She used to do styles with yarn intertwined with the braids spelling out our name and any design you can think of she made it happen. There was always someone at our apartment getting their hair done by my mother. Whenever I got my hair braided MAN OH MAN was it the most painful experience. [I'm VERY tender headed]
I cant lie, once my hair was done I felt like a nubian princess. My baby hairs laid down perfect and my eyes were extra chinky. Not to mention that gave me a week of not doing my hurrrr.
I can tell the difference from early 2000 style to more recent styles. In the early 2000's Allen Iverson a retired NBA player was known for having some really dope braids. He broke out the design with a bunch of tiny cornrows combined into one big cornrow. Everyone called that particular style the "Iversons". Like "Hook me up with those Iversons yo" they would say. LOL
I feel like back then people were more creative with the designs they rocked. I would say its been about two years since I've seen people doing cornrows to their hair again. This time around the styles are more simple. I would see two simple cornrows or three. No intricate designs just straight backs with the baby hairs on FLEEK.
HOWEVER I'm ready to turn up and get my hair braided in a really nice design again. Something similar to the early 2000's. I feel like its coming back again and even if it wasn't guess what I'm still down for it. Since I braid my own hair I'm just waiting on the day to come to where I'm up for the challenge. Just know it's-about-to go-down!
