Does The Acquisition Of Justin Upton Make The Tigers A Championship Contender?

The Tigers are going all in with Justin Upton.
Detroit finished last in the AL Central last year, and have focused this entire off-season on acquiring the right pieces to change the culture of the ball club. The Tigers landed starter Jordan Zimmermann and soon after added Mike Pelfrey to the rotation. The club acquired a bona fide closer in Francisco Rodriguez via trade with Milwaukee and added fellow relievers Justin Wilson and Mark Lowe as setup men.
Today, the team made major noise by adding Justin Upton via free agency.
Upton not only provides an upgrade in left field (a position of weakness for the Tigers entering this winter), but a strong bat in the middle of the lineup. The 28-year-old is not only a solid (albeit streaky) producer (.271/.352/.473), he’s young.
While the Tigers have a solid core of bats in the lineup in Kinslef, Victor Martinez and Miguel Cabrera, they are getting older. Upton is 28 and entering the prime of his career. He shows the ability to field, hit and run the bases at a top tier rate for his position.

I don't know if it makes them a championship team, but it's a big step forward.

Andy Murray headlines Great Britain Davis Cup finals team
Andy Murray surprised the tennis world on Sunday by winning the European Open in Antwerp. The Scotsman had been out of the limelight of tennis over the last year following hip surgery. Murray had struggled to regain form and fitness following the procedure and Sunday’s win at the European Open was his first victory in two years. Tennis fans can enjoy Murray’s return to action. The tennis star is expected to return to the courts at the Davis Cup finals in November. The tennis tournament in Madrid will feature Murray alongside captain Leon Smith, Dan Evans, Jamie Murray, and Neal Skupski. The tournament will see Murray compete in the Davis Cup for the first time since 2016. Great Britain last won the Davis Cup in 2015. Great Britain will start the Davis Cup finals against The Netherlands on 20 November and Kazakhstan on 21 November. Despite Murray’s return to winning tennis, injuries could see the tennis star struggle to win further events. Murray has been praised by tennis players and pundits following his win at the European Open. However, the positivity hasn’t carried over to everyone. Swiss surgeon Dr Hannes Rudiger has warned Murray that he faces “catastrophic consequences” if he continues to play tennis. Murray is just 32-years old and still has – barring injury – more years left to play. At least he does theoretically. Great Britain may have Murray in their Davis Cup finals team but they are 10th in odds according to major bookmakers. Spain, France, Croatia, and the United States lead the way in Davis Cup finals odds for the tournament in November. While Murray may not be able to lead Great Britain to success in Madrid, the tennis star is nearing his best once more. Perhaps next season he could be back in his best form. How good was Murray at the European Open? According to stats kept at the tournament in Antwerp, Murry was hitting the ball seven miles per hour faster on his backhand side. Pundits also raved about Murray’s serve and ball toss during the tournament. Both his backhand and ball toss were credited as reasons for his win over Stan Wawrinka. Murray isn’t the only major tennis star set to play at the Davis Cup finals. Novak Djokovic, Rafa Nadal, and Daniil Medvedev will all be competing for their respective countries. This year’s Davis Cup will be a history-making event played at Madrid’s La Caja Magica. Eighteen nations in all will compete for the finals trophy. According to leading sportsbooks, the longest shots to win the finals are the Netherlands, Kazakhstan, and Colombia. Each nation is at 100/1 odds to win the event. Both the Netherlands and Kazakhstan will open the tournament against Great Britain. The Davis cup finals will have a round-robin tournament format with teams playing in groups. The winner of each group along with the following two best teams will advance to the knockout stages. Ties will see two singles matches and one doubles rubber match. They will also feature the best of three tie-break sets.
I'm Ashamed of My Hometown
San Diego, get your shit together. Each year at the Padres stadium, Petco Park, the LGBT society in SD holds an event called "Out at the Park" that is meant to bring the community together for an evening of baseball. This year, Petco Park really, really screwed up. The San Diego Men's Gay Chorus was meant to sing the national anthem before the game to represent the LGBT community for this event. Their voices were never heard. The stadium let them take the field, and then as they were about to sing, a recorded female voice instead sang the anthem (which, if you've been to a Padres game, isn't something that happens - we always have live singing) The men had to walk off the field hearing people shouting profane, homophobic things at them. The Padres said it was a mistake, a technical error, a third party contractor, and that they were sorry. But that doesn't explain the other examples of mistreatment. Days prior to the game, the Padres organization told the performers that the chorus would have to pay for their tickets in order to sing. This is not something that happens, ever. If you perform the national anthem, you get to enter the park for free, DUH. Why did the Padres suddenly want this now? That would have cost the small organization thousands of dollars, and after dispute they were finally allowed in as performers. You can listen to their great voices here when they performed in 2015. It's a pity their voices weren't heard this year. Get it together Padres, you're a disappointment in baseball but don't be a disappointment to your entire community.

The 5 Strangest Superstition in Sports!
Hello sports fans! It's Friday the 13th! Here are some of the strangest superstitions in sports! Michael Jordan Michael always wore his UNC shorts under his NBA shorts. Thus, he wore longer shorts than his fellow players at that time. In the end however, his fellow players followed suit after the legend. Serena Williams Serena Williams is known for not changing socks once during a tournament. It sucks to wear a pair of socks for more than a day...imagine how it would feel to wear the same socks for an entire tournament! I guess Serena doesn't mind it considering the number of tournaments she has won. Brian Ulracher Brian Ulracher ate two chocolate chip cookies before every game. Maybe that was the secret to his muscular body. I think it'd be fair to call him the "Cookie Monster". Caron Butler Caron Butler was known to be an avid fan of Mountain Dew. He loved the drink so much that he drank before and during every game. During his UNC days, he asked his wife to pick him a 2-L bottle of the green stuff, and drank half of it before the game, and the rest during half-time. In 2007, the Wizards and NBA banned him from drinking it during games so he eventually quit the whole thing in 2009. Moises Alou This one has to be the most f*cked up one out of all of them. Moises Alou used to pee on his own hands to harden them! Should we see that as commitment to the game of baseball or just some pretty weird ass shit? Oh and by the way, don't try to harden your hands by peeing on them ladies and gentlemen, because doctors have confirmed that peeing on your hand doesn't harden them. It actually softens them. @jeff4122 @ButterflyBlu @superiorsl @Starbell808 @DonnaMelton @InPlainSight @jokes @BEAUTYgirlARIEL @David19Flo23 @karencorchado @salahabdalla @Moose892 @BrookieyElba @SamuelRodriguez @ValerieAlissaPa @xitlalicordova1 @AndrewMaldonado @Jovi @Shippudenguy21 @AbdulrahmanSaad @trinityarcangel @thefeels @Link4TW @ChriSingularis @sanazsanaz @WilliamBrown @DannyMoses @ClaySharko @Ravenwing92 @FromBlue2U @TravisBeck @LemissaNicole @BossDominata @gatorchick96 @MatthewBoughton @MarcusJiles @BrandonMcNeil @MalikLawary @KyleBerke @manbungo2000 @DerekGumtow @havic @Straightshooter @PhilAnthony @Kirooken @yaakattackk @RodneyYoung @DreJones @JonathanKerns @bnzattoni @TravisManning @GalacticChakra @smothgreen @afxs @johnnolastname @ChristopherKenn @ChasePage @coreywriley91@MikeWolf @MrTenThirty @JasonNilsson @BrunoDutch @SherzTYC @krishntejanand @addri @ChrisStephens What was your favorite one from the list? The Woman Who Struck Out Babe Ruth
And Lou Gehrig too. On April 2, 1931 the seventeen year-old Jackie Mitchell struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig back-to-back. They were arguably the deadliest hitting duo in baseball history, and she did it in only seven pitches. Which is pretty damn impressive. Less impressive is what happened afterwards. "They are too delicate. It would kill them to play ball every day." Ruth wasn't the most gracious in defeat (via), and some historians have dismissed the exhibition game as an April Fool's Prank. It's unlikely that Ruth would have been visibly upset if he struck out on purpose, nor would he have asked the umpire to inspect the ball. And a few days later, Mitchell's contract was voided on the basis that baseball was "too strenuous" for women. Yeah, beating some of the most famous players of all time sounds really strenuous. What if she broke a nail?! /sarcasm She kept playing anyway. So clearly the game wasn't TOO strenuous (she died in 1987 at the age of 74). She joined the amateur team House of David in 1933, and retired in 1937. Meanwhile, women weren't formally banned from the MLB until 1952, though unofficially they were often kept off the field. Such was the case for Eleanor Engle, who never took the field. The President of the minor leagues stated that no contract with a woman would be approved because “not in the best interest of baseball that such travesties be tolerated.” In the 1970s girls were allowed to join Little League, in the 80s women joined college baseball, and in the 1990s, Ila Borders joined the St. Paul Saints of the independent Northern League. But no female player has reached the majors (yet). But the 100-year anniversary of the time a teenage girl struck out some of the toughest hitters in baseball history. Maybe it'll happen again in 2031?
