I know this is the one sporting event that every single sports fan around the world is looking forward to this year: the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics. The opening ceremony will take place on August 5th and the closing ceremony will take place on August 21st. And this year, the Olympics will feature 28 sports (my favorite sports, baseball, will have to wait till the 2020 Tokyo Olympics).
And the main reason why I am looking forward to the 2016 Summer Olympics is because of this man:
Phelps, the most decorated Olympic athlete of all time with 22 medals, including 18 gold medals, will come back at the age of 30 to swim at the Olympic level once again. Phelps announced his retirement after the 2012 London Olympics, but the man simply could not hold back from racing and announced his return from retirement in 2014.
We all know about the personal issues that Phelps have run into (DUI, marijuana, etc.), but I'm just really excited to see him back in the pool and racing. He is my all-time favorite and I just love the fact that he decided to come back even after he turned 30 which is old, I mean very old, in the world of swimming.
And if we are lucky...we might be able to see another great race like the one he had against Milorad Cavic in the 100m fly, in which Phelps beat Cavic by 0.01 second. And thanks to that, Phelps was able to garner eight gold medals, breaking Mark Spitz's record of seven gold medals in a single Olympic games.
