After the announcement of the Academy Awards nominees, and a HUGE backlash from the film community demanding some representation for minorities, and woman I decided to do a little research to see if we are getting anywhere when it comes to representation within the films themselves.
One of the things we looked in college were representation test. One of the them - them Bechdel Test takes an interesting look at women characters in film.
What's the Bechdel Test? Well, it's a simple way to see if women are being represented in film. And to test a movie you only need to do 3 things:
1. It has to have at least two (named) women in the film
2. Who talk to each other
3. About something besides a man
So how does Hollywood do in the test? Well, according to BechdelTest.com they desperately fail.
International Films seem to do way better than the rest of the U.S.
Only 5 film studios passed with a Green rating (less that 37% of films failing)
While 16 international studios got the green.
The U.S. overall films that fail this test? 45%
