[Discussion] Who will win the EPL?

This weekend, the EPL takes a break from regular league play to shift focus to the FA Cup.

That gives us a minute to step back and take a look at the league so far. With 23 of 38 rounds in the books, who is going to win the league?

The way I see it, there are four real challengers.

Leicester City

Leicester are the team that shocks the world more and more each week as they inch closer to the title. They currently hold a 3 point lead in the league, sitting on 47 points. It has been a remarkable season for a team that was nearly relegated last season and didn't appear to get all that better over the summer. But they have been inspired by Riyad Mahrez, N'Golo Kante and Jamie Vardy and look to be ready to make a legitimate race toward the end. Despite everyone's reservations, Leicester are in it to win it.

Arsenal

At this point it seems that Arsenal are favorites. While they are 3 points behind Leicester, they are just now getting many of their injured players back (Alexis Sanchez, Francis Coquelin) and they have a very experienced roster, full of players who are used to playing in huge matches. That experience could prove invaluable for a team that is looking to win its first league title in ages and ages. The fan base wants it, and this could be the year that Arsenal break their curse.

Manchester City

City are another team with a great pedigree. They are full of experience and talent, and many of the players on this team were around when City last won the league a few season ago. They are no doubt hungry to repeat that success, and are level with Arsenal on points. However, they just got news that superstar newcomer Kevin de Bruyne will be out 6 weeks, which could seriously hurt their chances. He has been one of their star performers this season.

Tottenham

Spurs are the sleepers in this race, sitting 5 points behind leaders Leicester. But their form has been superb. They have one of the best goalkeepers in the world in Hugo Lloris and a terrific defense to boot, not to mention their talisman Harry Kane and the blossoming midfielder Dele Alli proving to be one of the most exciting players around. Many see Spurs as more pretenders than contenders, but I'm not ready to count them out.
My money is on Arsenal. I think they have the squad depth required to make it happen, with the experience and quality they have on their roster. I'm not counting out any of these teams and I honestly think anyone could win, but for the moment, I'm picking Arsenal.

Who do you think will win the league when it's all said and done?

Arsenal, once we get everybody back n fit.
Arsenal
I thought Leicester would start going downhill earlier this year....but from what I'm seeing, they are serious contenders to win the whole thing. But in the end, I feel like Man City is going to take it haha
@InPlainSight naw that was in 2004, I wasn't following them at that time.
@yaakattackk invincibles?

To my sports fans...
I said this in a previous card, but I want you all to know that I don't think I'm going to be able to be on Vingle as much, at least for now. I am in my last semester of college right now and really need to focus on my studies as I finish my degree... plus... you know... that job search that everyone talks about! I've had so much fun being involved with all of you over the past few months through the MLB playoffs (how great were those Mets!?!?), EPL and NFL seasons - culminating with the Super Bowl next week! I know this community can be an amazing resource for everyone and I hope you all continue to share ideas, thoughts, favorite plays and players and games and everything else that I've seen go on here recently. I'm Ashamed of My Hometown
San Diego, get your shit together. Each year at the Padres stadium, Petco Park, the LGBT society in SD holds an event called "Out at the Park" that is meant to bring the community together for an evening of baseball. This year, Petco Park really, really screwed up. The San Diego Men's Gay Chorus was meant to sing the national anthem before the game to represent the LGBT community for this event. Their voices were never heard. The stadium let them take the field, and then as they were about to sing, a recorded female voice instead sang the anthem (which, if you've been to a Padres game, isn't something that happens - we always have live singing) The men had to walk off the field hearing people shouting profane, homophobic things at them. The Padres said it was a mistake, a technical error, a third party contractor, and that they were sorry. But that doesn't explain the other examples of mistreatment. Days prior to the game, the Padres organization told the performers that the chorus would have to pay for their tickets in order to sing. This is not something that happens, ever. If you perform the national anthem, you get to enter the park for free, DUH. Why did the Padres suddenly want this now? That would have cost the small organization thousands of dollars, and after dispute they were finally allowed in as performers. You can listen to their great voices here when they performed in 2015. It's a pity their voices weren't heard this year. Get it together Padres, you're a disappointment in baseball but don't be a disappointment to your entire community.
Palace sign Adebayor!
I never thought I'd really get excited about Emmanuel Adebayor in any way, shape, or form, but I'm desperate. Crystal Palace and the ancient Togolese striker agreed to terms today after long negotiations, and the striker will join the team until the end of the season. Adebayor is actually just 31 years old, but it feels like he has been around for decades. He has been without a club since Spurs released him at the end of last season, but Adebayor has a long history in the EPL, and has played for many of the top clubs. He's got a very impressive resume, even if he is the butt end of many jokes in the EPL for being somewhat underwhelming and always a second-best option. He played for Arsenal for 3 years, Manchester City for 3 years, went on loan at Real Madrid for a season, and then played at Spurs for some four years as well. That's quite a list of top teams. At this stage in his career, Adebayor is nothing to really get terribly excited about. He is slow, but strong as an ox and has always had a really particular nose for goal. And that hunger and desire to score is exactly what Palace need. After they started the season so strongly, Palace have really struggled since the Christmas period. They have picked up just 2 points total in their past 6 league matches and in that period they have scored a grand total of 1 goal. This is a team desperate for a striker, and Ade fills that role. Connor Wickham was brought into get goals, and he has worked hard, but does not seem to be developing into the goal-getter that everyone hoped. Marouane Chamakh, Dwight Gayle and Frazier Campbell have not been even close to good enough and enough is enough. With great service coming from the wings by emerging stars Wilf Zaha and Yannick Bolasie, not to mention a real strength through the middle with Yohan Cabaye and a very solid defense led by Scott Dann and Damien Delaney, Palace have it in them to be a really good side. We saw how well they can play when they racked up points in the first half of the season, and I see no reason they can't recapture that form. They have suffered lots of injuries, but many of their players are back or nearing their return. This could be the cusp of a change in form for the Eagles. I'm thrilled about the Adebayor signing. He can immediately help a side that needs a jolt of energy and experience. What do you think? Is the big man too old to make an impact in the Prem, or can he really be of service to Palace? @InPlainSight @AbdulrahmanSaad @trinityarcangel @thefeels @MarcusJiles @DerekGumtow @havic @yaakattackk @bnzatton @SherzTYCi @krishntejanand @addri @mishthi @andwas @NimishMathur @Sydsocquet @starli @kyleatekwana @BenjiPhilip @Eduardo14 @AshfakEjaaz @EmanueleYagoda @Bobs

EPL Match of the Week: Leicester City vs. Chelsea
We'll have to wait until Monday for this week's EPL Match of the Week, but it should be a great one all the same. It's the two most surprising teams of the season, if you ask me: Chelsea vs. Leicester City. However, their surprises have been for wildly different reasons. Chelsea, last year's champions, currently sit in 14th place with just 15 points from 15 matches. Leicester, who only barely avoided relegation last season, sit in first place in the shock of the season. Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahre have led the way for Leicester in their renaissance, as Vardy leads the scoring charts in the division and Mahrez is being celebrated as one of the league's best midfield, especially after his hat trick last week. Leicester are coming off a huge 3-0 win over Swansea City with led to the subsequent sacking of Gary Monk for the Swans. Their form has been super and it's time we take them seriously. Chelsea, on the other hand, continue to struggle. While they had a good week by qualifying for the Champions League final 16 to salvage some hope of silverware, their EPL form has been dreadful. The midweek win over Porto and the qualification will definitely have spirits high in Chelsea's camp but it cannot be ignored that the players just aren't getting it together in the same way they did last year. Manager Jose Mourinho is under fire and deservedly so. Prediction I never thought I'd say this at the beginning of the season, but I believe Leicester can do it. I think they're going to add to their amazing run and continue to put Chelsea to shame. I'll say Leicester 2, Chelsea 1. Bang. What do you think? I know @mchlyang will disagree and hopes Chelsea will pull it off but can they do so against the hottest team in the league? @InPlainSight @AbdulrahmanSaad @trinityarcangel @thefeels @MarcusJiles @DerekGumtow @havic @yaakattackk @bnzatton @SherzTYCi @krishntejanand @addri @mishthi @andwas @NimishMathur @Sydsocquet @starli @kyleatekwana @BenjiPhilip @Eduardo14 @AshfakEjaaz @EmanueleYagoda
EPL Boxing Day Fixtures Preview
It's the most exciting time of the year in the English Premiership, with teams playing on Boxing Day (Saturday) and again on Monday. Lots of points are decided in these two rounds, so let's take a look at the Boxing Day match list first! Here are some of the matches to really look forward to. Stoke City vs. Manchester United Many think this could be the beginning of the end for Louis van Gaal. Stoke are always a tough match, especially at home (though their home form hasn't been as good this year as it usually is). But United are struggling mightily and are winless in 6. van Gaal will need to put out an attacking side to try to instill some faith in the United board and supporters so he can turn around the fate of this club before it's too late for him. My pick: United 2, Stoke 0. Liverpool vs. Leicester City These are two of the most surprising teams in the league this year, albeit for very different reasons. We all know the Leicester story, as they have been atop the table for some weeks now and look to be the real deal. On the other hand, Liverpool continue to struggle despite having brought in big-name manager Jurgen Klopp. They sit in 9th, though they are just 5 points off the coveted top 4. This could be a big turn around match for Klopp. My pick: Liverpool 2, Leicester 2. Chelsea vs. Watford So, which Chelsea is for real? The team that struggled and slumped to 15th under Jose Mourinho? Or the team that looked great last time out against Sunderland following the sacking of Mourinho? The Watford test will go a long way to showing us. Watford have been great recently, winning four in a row and climbing to 7th. Chelsea will want to put an end to that run and begin to string together some victories of their own. My pick: Chelsea 3, Watford 0.
EPL Match of the Week: ARSENAL vs. Chelsea
This week we've got a real gem to look forward to as Chelsea face Arsenal at the Emirates in the EPL. Here's how it all looks to me: Arsenal This could be the return to action for winger Alexis Sanchez, who has been out with injury since November. Arsenal have been playing great football even without him, but when he's healthy he can be easily one of the best players in the league. He can be a huge boost for an Arsenal team attempting to mount a major title challenge and fight off tough competition from Leicester City, Man City and Spurs. Their defense has been really solid with the emerging Hector Bellerin, while the midfield has the strings pulled by Mesut Ozil, who continues to prove that he is one of the best in the whole world. He leads the league in assists and is a real joy to watch. Chelsea We all know about Chelsea's struggles this season. They have been better since Guus Hiddink took over as manager, but still sit in 14th place. For me, a large part of their struggles comes down to the horrible form of Eden Hazard, who has completely failed to live up to the expectations he set for himself during last seasons' PFA Player of the Year winning campaign. He needs to be better, and if he is, Chelsea can mount a challenge toward the upper end of the table. Champions League football is out of the question, but they can still challenge for Europe and it may well start with a big match against Arsenal this weekend. My pick Chelsea have been looking better, but Arsenal are the best team in the league getting their best player back from injury. For me, that settles it. Arsenal 2, Chelsea 1. Who takes it for you? @InPlainSight @AbdulrahmanSaad @trinityarcangel @thefeels @MarcusJiles @DerekGumtow @havic @yaakattackk @bnzatton @SherzTYCi @krishntejanand @addri @mishthi @andwas @NimishMathur @Sydsocquet @starli @kyleatekwana @BenjiPhilip @Eduardo14 @AshfakEjaaz @EmanueleYagoda @Bobs
Chelsea lose again, Leicester win again!
I feel like I'm writing the same card each week. Looking at the above is truly unbelievable. Leicester City, the team that everyone expected to be relegated after somehow escaping relegation last year, sit in FIRST PLACE after half of the season has passed. And the best part is, they've earned every bit of it. Riyad Mahrez - who assisted one goal (to the perfect Jamie Vardy) and scored an absolute stunner of his own (seriously, he looked like Messi, curling one around the keeper with his left foot) - could be the best midfielder in the Prem right now. He's that good. Vardy can't stop scoring, as he continues to lead the scorers' chart with 15 goals from 16 matches. Truly, hard to believe. His goal yesterday which got the scoring started vs. Chelsea was beautiful, as he latched on to the end of a delicious cross from Mahrez and poked it home for the goal. Pure class. The other end of the table brings a very different reality. Chelsea, who at this time last year were all but certain to go on to win the title (which they did), sit in 16th place. One point off the relegation zone. They have been outplayed all season long and their 9 losses are no illusion. They just are not any good. It's difficult to believe that a team with Eden Hazard, Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas, Willian and others in their First XI could lose 9 matches. But they have done. Manager Jose Mourinho said that he felt 'betrayed' by his players in the game last night as they continuously missed assignments and failed to follow his instruction. I'm not sure how true that is but in any case, for me, it's time for him to go. Cheers to Leicester City. I hope their success continues. They are an absolute joy to watch, as they seem to be as shocked as everyone else when they keep winning. Did you see any of the match? @InPlainSight @AbdulrahmanSaad @trinityarcangel @thefeels @MarcusJiles @DerekGumtow @havic @yaakattackk @bnzatton @SherzTYCi @krishntejanand @addri @mishthi @andwas @NimishMathur @Sydsocquet @starli @kyleatekwana @BenjiPhilip @Eduardo14 @AshfakEjaaz @EmanueleYagoda
What's with the Chinese football league?
There's something strange happening in the football world right now. Even with all the money and appeal that the world's top leagues bring - the EPL, La Liga, Germany's Bundesliga, France's Ligue 1 and Italy's Serie A, some top players have recently departed their clubs and gone to accept enormous contracts in the Chinese Super League. The latest star to make the move is Chelsea's Ramires, a player at the peak of his career at age 28. I'm stunned. There is a history of great players making the move to China, but in the past it has been players at the very tail end of their careers moving across the world to make huge amounts of money before they retire. Think Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka, who in recent years went to Shanghai to play. And I understand the appeal for an aging player. Someone like Drogba couldn't keep up with the pace of the top European leagues anymore, but could still be a huge star in China, where the league quality is extremely low. They are major marketing moves for the Chinese teams too, who can bring in world superstars to boost their image. But recently, the players making the move have not been aging stars. They are players in the prime of their careers, like Chelsea's Ramires. Other players to recently make the move are Roma's Gervinho (formerly of Arsenal), who is just 28 years old and Colombia and Inter Milan's Freddy Guarin, a young midfielder of enormous quality and potential. He has been on the radar of the top EPL clubs for years, and to see him turn them down in exchange for a move to the low-level China league is shocking. Alessandro Diamanti, Momo Sissokho, Demba Ba and Paulinho are other players who have recently moved from their European clubs to play in China under huge contracts. It's a bizarre phenomenon. Football in China is not known to be a very popular sport, but the Chinese owners have loads of money and are doing a good job convincing top players to come and join them. I'm sad to see exciting players like Ramires and Gervinho leave Europe, where I could watch them in the Champions League, but I'm fascinated to see what they will make of themselves in China, and to follow along to see if the Chinese league continues to pry away great talent from Europe. @InPlainSight @AbdulrahmanSaad @trinityarcangel @thefeels @MarcusJiles @DerekGumtow @havic @yaakattackk @bnzatton @SherzTYCi @krishntejanand @addri @mishthi @andwas @NimishMathur @Sydsocquet @starli @kyleatekwana @BenjiPhilip @Eduardo14 @AshfakEjaaz @EmanueleYagoda @Bobs What do you make of this recent trend?
EPL Match of the Week: Arsenal vs. Man City
We've got one match this week that stands out above the rest, and it comes to us on Monday afternoon, 2PM ET. It's Arsenal vs. Man City - who takes it? City are coming off a good win over Swansea City, though they left it to late to steal 3 points. It was an important win for them as they kept pace with those at the top of the table. Midfielder David Silva is back from injury and is playing super football, showing again how valuable he is to this team. They just aren't the same team without him. With his form plus that of Raheem Sterling and Kevin de Bruyne, City have maybe the league's most powerful midfield. Goalkeeper Joe Hart is in great form in net, too, and is saving some real stunning shots to keep City safe. 32 points from 16 matches puts City right toward the top, fighting neck and neck with other title contenders. The often-criticized Olivier Giroud is in the form of his life for Arsenal at the moment, coming off a huge hat trick in the Champions League against Olympiacos to secure Arsenal's advance to the knockout stages. He scored again last week against lowly Aston Villa and is proving to everyone that he can be the main striker for a title-winning side. Mesut Ozil is also incredibly impressive week in and week out and has a ridiculous 13 assists in the league this season. Arsenal sit ahead of City by just one point, with 33 from 16 matches. My pick This is a very tough one to call. With the match being played at the Emirates and Arsenal's form as strong as it is, I'm going to have to take the Gunners. I'll say 2-1 to Arsenal in a big win. Who takes it for you? @InPlainSight @AbdulrahmanSaad @trinityarcangel @thefeels @MarcusJiles @DerekGumtow @havic @yaakattackk @bnzatton @SherzTYCi @krishntejanand @addri @mishthi @andwas @NimishMathur @Sydsocquet @starli @kyleatekwana @BenjiPhilip @Eduardo14 @AshfakEjaaz @EmanueleYagoda
