An Ode To Loserdom: Green Day's Dookie Turns 22

I wasn't one of those kids that grew up with punk in their veins. I discovered Green Day in 2004 when I was 11 years old. Had I known what a profound impact their music would have on me, I'd have gotten to know them a lot sooner.
Dookie is a record that I discovered around the same time. Though it was nearly 10 years old when I first heard it, it always seemed fresh to me. That's how you know an album is good, it never gets old.
Much like the greats before them, Green Day took punk and turned it into a national treasure for kids who were growing up and out in all the wrong directions. I remember days spent looking out my suburban windows, dreaming of something more, something real.
Released on February 1st, 1994, Dookie put music and lyrics to a feeling that most of us have when we're growing up: hopelessness, apathy, loneliness, confusion. These songs take place in a headspace where the future is indefinite, life is going by too slowly and yet everyone is bitching at you to move faster. I had never known anyone else who felt this way, until I listened to Green Day.
Although American Idiot set the standard for us millennials as the record that defined our generation politically and culturally, there was something indescribably perfect about Dookie, an album that nearly out aged us all.
Songs like "Sassafras Roots" and "Pulling Teeth" bring up those awkward first moments of love and wasting time with someone you might not know in 10 years. "Longview" makes you remember the boredom and isolation of being a young person.
"Basket Case" became the anthem for millions of kids who were cast off as undesirable, kooky or too off-kilter to function. These feelings ebb and flow, they grow and change, but underneath everything...including 22 years of shit, they're still there.
Burnouts and degenerates of every generation can bond over these songs. Whether you're 13 or 35 some of those feelings still exist.
I doubt that they knew this at the time, but when Billie Joe Armstrong, Tre Cool and Mike Dirnt made this record they went down in history as three punks from the Bay (my current home) who changed everything.
I'm now a 23 year old working professional. I'm still a musician, and I'm definitely still a punk. I still feel left out and lonely. I still have the same irrational fire and guilt for my generation locked away in my anxiety riddled brain, and whenever I put this record on, I remember that 22 years ago three dudes from the Bay felt the exact same way.
In 22 years, both Dookie an I have done a lot of growing up. As more and more kids discover the power of this album, the ones who were there at the beginning are starting families, making money and continuing the legacy of their parents...whom they either resented or just didn't understand in 1994. It's funny how life works. It's so cyclical.

Now, as I look out at where I've ended up, I have to credit Green Day, and this album for some of it.

The individuality I gained through this music has afforded me incredible opportunities. Green Day helped me develop my world view: embracing the chaos, letting go of the future and reveling in hopeless youth. We're still the same people, just in a different time. And life goes on, losers grow up, but the truth still remains...and its in these songs.

This album is still a love letter to all the lost kids out there, and 22 years on, as more and more of us find our way, the band included, there's something really beautiful about being lost.

Ah Kill The DJ is so awesome! Definitely a party song and @JayZK 86 is about being forced out of Gilman Street, the place they came up in. It's just kind of like, when you grow past something and become unwelcome. But there's a part of you that wants to go back to that time and do it over.

It's a zombie romance that has arguably the most famous choreography ever. Fall Out Boy - A Little Less Sixteen Candles, A Little More "Touch Me" The boys of FOB are unapologetically obsessed with MJ so it makes sense that they would pay homage to him with a movie music video all their own. Ukraine needs $411 bn for reconstruction, recovery: World Bank
Ukraine's reconstruction and recovery needs have grown to $411 billion, just over a year since Russia's invasion, the World Bank said Wednesday. The assessment, made jointly by Ukraine's government, the World Bank, the European Commission and the United Nations, is an increase from the $349 billion estimated in a report released in September. The latest evaluation expects Kyiv to require $14 billion for critical and priority reconstruction and recovery investments in 2023. Meeting these needs will call for $11 billion in financing beyond what Ukraine's government has already addressed in its 2023 budget, according to the assessment. Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has displaced millions of people, and global food and energy prices surged on the fallout from the war. "Energy infrastructure, housing, critical infrastructure, economy and humanitarian demining are our five priorities for this year," Ukraine's Prime Minister Denys Shmygal said in a statement. He added that part of the reconstruction work has already been done. But Shmygal warned that "the amount of damage and recovery needs currently does not include data on the loss of infrastructure, housing and businesses in the occupied territories." When the defense forces release them, authorities will start restoration work in these territories, he said. But the $411 billion needed is 2.6 times the country's estimated gross domestic product for 2022. The highest expected needs are in transport, followed by housing and energy. Ukraine's reconstruction will "take several years," said the World Bank's vice president for Europe and Central Asia, Anna Bjerde. She added that support for public investment also needs to be "complemented by significant private investment to increase the available financing for reconstruction." The report released Wednesday said that estimates "should be considered as minimums as needs will continue to rise as long as the war continues." But damage has not surged as much as it could have, in part because the worst of the conflict has been limited to areas that have already been significantly damaged. Some of the country's needs have been met as well by Ukraine's government, with support from its partners. Allies have rushed to pump aid into the country since the conflict broke out. The war has tipped 7.1 million people into poverty, undoing 15 years of development progress and worsening inequalities, the assessment said. Finland opens airspace for NATO surveillance and intelligence flights
In a historic move, Finland has opened its airspace for NATO surveillance and intelligence missions, allowing the alliance to monitor Russian activities more closely in the region. The first surveillance flight in Finnish airspace was conducted in cooperation with the United States on Thursday 23 March 2023. The flight involved both manned and unmanned aircraft that operated under national direction and supervision, in accordance with Finnish national laws and regulations. The details of the flight were not disclosed for operational security reasons. Similar flights in Finnish airspace will be carried out in the future as well with different types of aircraft, both unmanned and manned. This decision comes after Finland and Sweden joined a new initiative launched by 16 NATO Allies in February 2023, called Alliance Persistent Surveillance from Space (APSS). APSS is a virtual constellation of both national and commercial space assets, such as satellites, that leverages the latest advances in commercial space technology. It aims to streamline data collection, sharing and analysis among NATO Allies and with the NATO command structure, while generating cost savings. It also provides a powerful asset for civil-military cooperation and innovation. According to NATO’s Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană, APSS will significantly improve NATO’s intelligence and surveillance, and provide essential support to NATO’s military missions and operations. He also praised Luxembourg’s early contribution of 16.5 million euros that laid the groundwork for this transformative initiative. Finland’s participation in APSS reflects its deepening cooperation with NATO on security issues, especially in light of Russia’s growing assertiveness and military modernization. Finland is not a member of NATO but has been a partner since 1994 and participates in many NATO-led operations and exercises. Finland also hosts the European Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats, which works closely with NATO. By opening its airspace for NATO surveillance and intelligence missions, Finland hopes to enhance its situational awareness and deterrence posture in the Baltic Sea region. It also hopes to contribute to regional stability and security by sharing information with other partners. Finland’s decision has been welcomed by other Nordic countries as well as by the United States. I'm one of those people that just retains random facts about rock bands. I've been contributing to a few Bay Area publications and it got me thinking about my favorite band of all time, Green Day. It's kind of funny. I was born in Los Angeles and have lived all over the country. The greatest part of my time till this point was spent in the Midwest, so it was funny that I ended up in the home of my heroes. Here are 10 things you might not know about Green Day, most of them have to do withthings they did in the Bay Area, so natives of Nor Cal, here we go~! 1. Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt went to Pinhole Valley High School Contra Costa County is known for its refinery towns, but Pinhole Valley is known for their notable alumni Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt of Green Day. It's pretty badass that this tiny high school in Northern California is like...world famous because of its alumni. I mean, they're some of the biggest rock stars in the world. There's even video of the guys playing on the school's quad, a lot like my band used to do. Everybody has to start somewhere. 2. Tre Cool grew up in some damn mountain range, but was originally born in Germany. Those gorgeous mountains you can’t help but stare at on your way north were once home to Green Day drummer Tre Cool who ended up spending all of his time drumming outdoors, because there wasn’t much to do up in that altitude. No internet yet. You could develop a lot of skills back in the day, before entertainment was always at your fingertips and people became perpetually bored. 3. Green Day actually had a different drummer before Tre Cool joined. His name was Al Sobrante. Of course, any Bay Area native would know that his name is a direct reference to El Sobrante, California another small town in the Contra Costa County. It directly translates to “the leftovers” which is what ended up happening to Al when he left Green Day. Tough shit. 4. Green Day's first gig was at a BBQ joint called "Rod's Hickory Pit". 30 friends gathered to hear the first ever Green Day concert. Billie Joe’s mother Ollie got them the gig because she was working there as a waitress at the time. My band used to play at a place called Zeke's Tavern. We'd have our friends and family come out and hang. We'd get paid like...100 bucks for a full set. Split 5 ways. Again, starting somewhere. 5. Billie Joe and Mike started playing their instruments around age 11, Tre at 12. The first band Tre was part of played outside up in the mountains. They were called “The Lookouts”. Tre was by far the youngest member of the band. My first band The Walking Contradictions (of course, named after a Green Day song) started playing when I was 12. The parallels keep on coming. 6. Green Day played with Rancid, Operation Ivy, The Queers and more at 924 Gilman Street in Berkeley, California. I have yet to make my pilgrimage to this punk mecca, but I will. One of my dreams as a little kid was to play here...maybe at 23 I will. 7. Green Day released two full length albums on Lookout! Records before Dookie was even thought of. They're called "1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours" and "Kerplunk!". Some tracks that appear on Dookie were demoed during these recordings. See if you can pick them out. 8. The band was actually banned from Gilman for a while. The song “86” off of Green Day’s sophomore release, "Insomniac "was a direct retaliation against people who barred them from returning to Gilman because they were looked at as "sellouts" for signing to Warner Brothers in 1994. 9. ‘Do you think I enjoy doing this reform?’: France’s Macron breaks silence after overriding parliament
French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday staunchly defended his reforms to the pension system, but said the government could have communicated its policy better. “Do you think I enjoy doing this reform? No,” he said in a televised interview with channels TF1 and France 2, his first public statement to the country since forcing the bill through parliament without a vote. The move has intensified widespread protests across the country that have resulted in hundreds of people being detained after clashes with police. “I could sweep the dust under the rug like many before,” Macron said, continuing that the system was no longer balanced and the number of retirees was due to be 20 million by the 2030s. “The longer we wait the worse the situation will get.” Macron said the bill needed to be implemented by the end of the year. It still needs to be reviewed by France’s constitutional court. If passed, the key changes will see the national retirement age raised from 62 to 64 and the number of years required for someone to work before receiving a full pension go to 43. Unions fiercely oppose the bill, which they argue disproportionally impacts manual workers, women and lower-paid workers while corporations and the ultra-wealthy have benefited under Macron’s business-friendly reforms. Strikes have been carried out by teachers, transport workers and refinery workers, who have blocked fuel deliveries in some areas. Industrial action by garbage collectors has led to mounds of trash piling up in Paris in a striking symbol of the discontent. A major strike and protests are set to take place on Thursday. Macron said Wednesday he understood there was a “sense of injustice” and that working people felt they were the ones being asked to put in more effort while businesses profited. “There is this degree of cynicism when we have large corporations generating super profits and using that money to buy back their own shares,” he said, according to a France24 translation. “I’m going to ask the government to work to an exceptional contribution so that that money, when there are super profits, companies that are prepared to buy back their own shares, that their workers should benefit from that.” He cited the government’s tax on energy company profits to fund a price cap, but stopped short of committing to a future tax on “super profits,” saying “we have to find the right system, they must pay out more to their employees, there must be more contribution to this effort.” Macron also said he wanted to encourage people on benefits into the labor market through better support on childcare, transport and housing. Opposition lawmakers on the left and right wings oppose the pension system changes, as do some in the centrist and center-right parties that generally back Macron. However, they failed to pass two no-confidence motions against the government in the National Assembly, France’s lower house of parliament, on Monday. A no-confidence motion could have led to the ouster of Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, who has faced intense criticism in France for enacting the use of Article 49.3, which can pass a bill through the National Assembly without a majority vote. Macron, who has another four years of his presidential term, would likely have had to hold new parliamentary elections. These could have further weakened his ability to enact future policies; yet he has already expended significant political capital on the pension reforms. A poll in the Journal du Dimanche over the weekend put his approval rating at 28%, the lowest since the gilet jaunes protests in 2019. Meanwhile an Elabe poll on Monday found that 68% of respondents wanted the no-confidence vote to pass and 69% believed the use of Article 49.3 was a denial of democracy. In Wednesday’s interview, Macron said he respected unions and people had a legitimate right to protest, and the government should take account of their views. But he condemned the use of violence and threats of attacks against MPs and mayors, and — comparing the situation to the riots at the U.S. Capitol, protests in Brazil and the Netherlands and past protests in France, said “we cannot accept factions who are unruly.” He also accused unions of failing to negotiate or compromise over changes to the pension system, saying the government had been told “no reform.” Macron has intended to raise the pension age since he took office in 2017, and a previous set of changes to the pension system announced in 2019 were scrapped. He said the current plan was a result of the parliamentary process and has been adopted in the senate, the upper house of parliament. “I’m doing it out of a sense of responsibility,” he told the
