"I have to think of the best way to explain this. You already know my brother started this gang, that was about 9 years ago. His name was Sungmin, he'd have been 25 right now. He went to school with Yongguk and, from what I've come to understand, they basically decided to start this on a whim."

He pauses for a moment, collecting his thoughts. "My brother had a temper and would go and do drastic things without a thought as to what the outcome may be. Yongguk had no interest in being a leader. Therefore, they both knew they were going to need someone to do the thinking."

Two teenage boys sit on the roof of the high school. They stare off into the distance, day dreaming instead of being in class.

Sungmin leans back against the wall, lightly knocking his head against it as he leans his head back and closes his eyes. "You know, I don't think guys like us are meant for this place. We don't have the motivation for it and we aren't good for much besides causing trouble."

Yongguk looks at him and waits for him to continue.

"You know you could give me a response more than just once in a blue moon; otherwise I'll never know what's going on in your head. At this point I'm starting to think there's honestly nothing happening in there. Anyway, what are people like us meant to do? We get shit grades, so we aren't going to graduate. When we're not here wasting time, we're getting our asses in trouble. We aren't good at anything besides fighting and stealing."

Yongguk sighs and goes back to watching the clouds. "You're right. Except about grades; mine are passing. But there's something we could do; it just wouldn't be k-kosher."

"Morally upstanding."

Yongguk is met by Sungmin's blank stare. "Ya know, when you do talk you're great at making me feel stupid. I swear you do it on purpose. Speak normal."

He smirks because that's truly always his intent, he loves getting back at him for implying he's dense. "It'll be not nice."

"Ah, and that is?"

"A gang. We do illegal stuff. We st-start small and we'll get to the top someday."

"God, that would be perfect. But a gang with two people wouldn't work and I'd rather not join someone else's and be on the bottom tier."

"That's true."

"We'd need someone with some smarts to him, and also be willing to do underhanded things."

"That's not as hard as it sounds. Many times, the smartest people are the easiest to corrupt. A fast, dangerous life keeps a mind from becoming idle."

"Right, of course. Do you have anyone in mind?"

"Hell no. I don't talk to people." There's a pause until he's stricken with an idea. "Wait, what if we looked at the c-class rankings for test scores?"

"Great idea!"

"Let's see. We don't want to ask the smartest kid cause he's probably a nark. What about like third?"

Yongguk shrugs and nods.

"Where's all that brilliance from earlier? Whatever, the third guy is a Kim Himchan. Ever heard of him?

"He's in a class of mine. Smart, but only talks when he's called on. He seems to dislike most p-peo-ple."

"Sounds perfect."

"So that's the plan; start a gang, small stuff first and then big stuff. A nice retirement some day." Sungmin has a look of pride as if he's just discovered a new planet.

"Wow, that's a hell of a plan. What do you need me for? You obviously know how to think things through and work out minor details." Himchan’s obvious sarcasm sails over Sungmin's head, but Yongguk gives him a dirty look causing a small hint of fear to appear on his face.

"Thanks! Yeah, but we really would need someone to be a partner. I'll be the face, the intimidating one to keep the competition on edge; and you'll be the one planning strategies."

"And the mute?" His judgemental face is one Yongguk has seen too often; he thinks he's stupid.

"Muscle. He's fearsome and pretty ruthless." He puts his arm around Yongguk's shoulders. "A force to be reckoned with that's for sure."

"Well, you've certainly piqued my curiosity."

Sungmin gets that blank stare on his face again.

Yongguk leans over and whispers, "He means we've got his attention."

"Oh! Hey, if you want to talk like a dictionary, talk it at him. Keep it normal for me. As much as I hate to admit it, this guy's a lot sharper than I am. He's quiet; not dumb, so if you were thinking that just get that idea out of your head now."

"Huh. Again, that's interesting. I'll think about it." He turns and walks away.

"Don't rat us out either!"

"If I don't join, I don't care enough to get you caught."

"Smug. Not sure I can deal with that, but who knows; maybe he'll change his tune."

A week passes by and Himchan has yet to say anything to the two hoodlums. Midday he goes to the rooftop to finally answer them.

"Hey! So what's your answer? If you're not joining then we need to find som-"

"I'll do it."

"Really? Nice!" He nudges Yongguk. "It's all workin out man! So, Himchan, what's your plan?"

He sighs. " You seriously have nothing? Not even an idea?"

The boys shake their heads in unison.

"You'll definitely be putting me to work. How about paid protection to start with. That should be easy enough for you two. Just be aware of whose turf you're on. Don't say you'll protect businesses from gangs that are full on organizations either."

"Got it. We know who runs what parts of town so that should be easy to figure out."

"We'll work up from there. We simply need to get a good cash flow going before we move to the next level."

"You're a quick thinker. Glad we recruited you." Sungmin stands up and holds out his hand to shake Himchan’s. It's a basic contract between men that has no proof, but can be as closing as signing on the dotted line. Himchan returns a half-assed handshake and turns to go back into the building.

"By the way. I'm not dropping out. Unlike you, I have to be here to keep my parents out of my business. My grades slip one percent and there's going to be hell to pay."

"Done deal. Not a problem as long as you make time to do your part in all this."

He nods and leaves; unsure of whether he just made a deal with the devil, or if he's going to end up being the devil himself.
