Cam Newton - "I'm an African American QB"
During a news conference today, Cam Newton came out and said race may play a factor in why he's becoming a lightening rod for public criticism. Newton said, "I'm an African-American quarterback that scares people because they haven't seen nothing that they can compare me to." Newton has been the center of media attention all this time along, and he made controversial remarks on why he's been taking all the heat and furthered the conversation as to why parents have written to newspapers and websites criticizing his most minor missteps. [Here is an excerpt from the news conference.] In the video, Newton states that, "I said that prior to me being in this situation. But when I said it then it was like, 'Oh he is immature,' or, 'Oh he's young and this that and the third.' I felt a certain type of way then and I feel a certain type of way now - nothing has pretty much changed. They talk about maturity. They talk about skillset. ... The only thing that has changed (about me) is that we're winning now.'' Cam Newton's coach, Ron Rivera said Newton should not have to fight perceptions about race. Rivera, who is Hispanic, have admitted that there were instances when he had to fight the race battle as well. Rivera backed his quarterback and said, "It really should be about your merits more than anything else. More about what you have accomplished, what you have done.'' He added Cam Newton does not want to be known as the African American quarterback. Football fans, do you think it's fair to say that Cam Newton has been the center of attention within the media because of his race? Comment below!

I'm Ashamed of My Hometown
San Diego, get your shit together. Each year at the Padres stadium, Petco Park, the LGBT society in SD holds an event called "Out at the Park" that is meant to bring the community together for an evening of baseball. This year, Petco Park really, really screwed up. The San Diego Men's Gay Chorus was meant to sing the national anthem before the game to represent the LGBT community for this event. Their voices were never heard. The stadium let them take the field, and then as they were about to sing, a recorded female voice instead sang the anthem (which, if you've been to a Padres game, isn't something that happens - we always have live singing) The men had to walk off the field hearing people shouting profane, homophobic things at them. The Padres said it was a mistake, a technical error, a third party contractor, and that they were sorry. But that doesn't explain the other examples of mistreatment. Days prior to the game, the Padres organization told the performers that the chorus would have to pay for their tickets in order to sing. This is not something that happens, ever. If you perform the national anthem, you get to enter the park for free, DUH. Why did the Padres suddenly want this now? That would have cost the small organization thousands of dollars, and after dispute they were finally allowed in as performers. You can listen to their great voices here when they performed in 2015. It's a pity their voices weren't heard this year. Get it together Padres, you're a disappointment in baseball but don't be a disappointment to your entire community.
[DISCUSSION] Bad Sportsmanship?
The Carolina Panthers are indisputably the best football team right now. They are currently 13-0 and already clinched a spot in the playoffs. But... During their game against the Atlanta Falcons, they were crushing the Falcons 38-0. So they decided to take a team photo before the game even ended. I'm just interested to see what my sports fans think. Do you guys think what the Panthers did was disrespectful to the Falcons? NFL Dads Tackle Hair Styling In This Pantene Campaign.
Every year, major sponsors shell out some serious cash to grab our attention during the Super Bowl, by far the largest single sporting event of the year. They enlist A-List celebrities, bust out the CGI, and have the ability to transform a typical 30-second spot into a minute long movie of epic proportions. However, if there's one thing that these companies can learn from haircare brand Pantene this year, it's that turning on America's feels doesn't have to be that complicated - just bring in the adorableness of some NFL kids! Pantene's 'Dad-Do' Super Bowl campaign features a number of popular NFL fathers taking a stab at styling their daughters' hair with Pantene products. Like you could probably guess, they definitely struggle through it, but with some adorable encouragement from their daughters, the results are very much 'aww'-worthy. (My personal favorite is pictured above: DeAngelo Williams of the Pittsburgh Steelers versus his daughter Rhiya's braids and bows.) Benjamin Watson, tight end for the New Orleans Saints, displayed some pigtail game earning an impressed high five from his daughter, Grace. (He tried to argue that bigger hands make it hard for athletes to style hair, but he didn't do too bad for a first-timer!) The Dallas Cowboys' Jason Witten's adorable daughter Landry was SUPPOSED to get a braided ballerina bun, but let's just say there were some complications on the way. (Hey, if there's anything the Cowboys learned this season, it's that you can't win 'em all!) Click the video above for a look at the finished 30-second Super Bowl ad, or visit Pantene's official YouTube Channel to watch the full styling videos from each athlete. So how do you think they did? Was this concept just as adorable to you as it was to me? Let me know in the comments below and for more trending videos from across the web, follow my YouTube Nation collection!
