The story trailer for Mirror's Edge Catalyst was released earlier today and I've got to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the whole thing. When it started, I was a bit confused as to who was speaking/what was going on because it felt more like a movie trailer than a game trailer. It definitely hits all the cinematic beats that an action movie would hit and, honestly, I look at it as a positive thing.
I wasn't barely pleased with the first Mirror's Edge because it felt so short. The moment I started feeling like I was getting into the characters and the story, the game ended and it left a sour taste in my mouth. But I really enjoyed the first-person platformer mechanics they used in the first game. It really set the stage for games like Far Cry 3 and 4, especially when it comes to climbing those towers.
I was absolutely stunned at how gorgeous the game looks as well. I couldn't even tell you what I was expecting to see or how I wanted it to look but I can't stop hitting the replay button on YouTube just so I could look at all those character models again.
I think I'd be doing the game and you guys a disservice if I didn't mention how awesome it is that this game is one of the few/only first person titles that has an Asian-American woman as the lead character. It's surprising enough that the lead character/player character is a woman (because games are horrible at representation) but to have her be a woman of color as well makes it all the more awesome.
When the trailer ended, I immediately signed up for the Closed Beta they're holding and I'm crossing my fingers that I get into it. I can't wait to get my hands on this game even if it's just for that short beta period. Either way though, I have a feeling that I'll probably be picking this one up when it comes out.
I believe the estimated release date for Mirror's Edge Catalyst is sometime in May of this year. I'll be sure to edit this card when I find out the specific date.
