5 Simple Tips for Writing a Fan Letter in Korean
1. Use polite verb forms. Basically, Korean has two types of verb endings for polite speech style: 요(yo) and 다(da). When writing fan letters to celebrities, 요(yo) form is more appropriate than 다(da) form; 다(da) would sound too polite and formal for that kind of letter. 2. Use polite noun forms. In Korean, some nouns have entirely different forms for plain speech and honorific speech. To be polite, use 저(jeo) / 제(je) instead of 나(na) / 내(ne). 저(jeo) is the equivalent to ‘I, me’ in polite speech. 나(na) is the casual form of 저(jeo). 제(je) is the equivalent to ‘my’ in casual speech. 내(ne) is the casual form of 제(je). 3. But don’t be too formal and too polite. I’ve noticed that a lot of Korean learners tend to use the most polite noun forms when writing. Erring on the side of politeness is, of course, always good and safe, but in this fan letter, too-formal and too-polite nouns would sound a little awkward to native speakers (that is, the celebrities who will read your letter). Do not use 당신(dangshin). Instead, choose the right title for them, such as 오빠(oppa), 언니(unni), 누나(nuna), or 형(hyung), and use it. 4. Choose the perfect titles for celebrities. If the people you’re sending a letter to are older than you, you should use an appropriate title for them. There are four kinds of titles you would use. The most common titles are 오빠(oppa), 언니(unni), 누나(nuna), and 형(hyung). But what if you would be the same age as he/she? Adding the suffix씨 (ssi) to the name could be the appropriate solution in polite speech. When writing the letter with casual speech, you would attach 아 to the name ending in a consonant or 야 to the name ending with a vowel. In most cases, the given names are used with the titles we’ve just learned : First name + title. e.g. 세훈씨 Sehoon-ssi (from a male/female who is the same age as Sehoon in polite speech) 백현아 baekhyun-a (from a male/female who is the same age as Baekhyun in casual speech) 수호야 Suho-ya (from a male/female who is the same age as Suho in casual speech) 민호 오빠 Minho oppa (from a female younger than Minho) 티파니 누나 Tiffany nuna (from a male younger than Tiffany) 5. Attach 께 or 에게 to titles in the first sentence of a letter. The Korean equivalent of “to / dear” is “께(kke)” or “에게(ege)”. Though grammatically 께(kke) is the more honorific form than 에게(ege), there is no big difference between them. Just choose whichever you’d like to use. e.g. To Joongki oppa, Dear Joongki oppa (from a female younger than Joongki) Here is the entire example of a fan letter written in Korean. This letter was written to 송중기 (Joongki Song, a male Korean actor) by a younger female fan. For reference, I've made some blanks. You can freely adapt this template to suit your context, and fill in the blanks with the name of the celebrity you love! Hello, I’m your fan Jessica from Singapore. I’ve enjoyed watching your drama ‘Descendants of the Sun.’ I also watched your movie ‘A Werewolf Boy.’ You’re so cool. You’re my favorite actor. I felt so happy as you won the big prize yesterday. You fully deserve it. I’ve heard that you have a fan meeting in Hong Kong. I hope you also hold it in Singapore. Although we’ve never met, my love and support for you will never fade. Always take care of your health! I’m looking forward to your next work! What Do The Protests in Seoul Look Like Now?
This past Friday the Korean Constitutional Court (think of it as the US Supreme Court) ruled unanimously that Park Geun Hye should be officially impeached. Since most of the country wanted this (at her lowest I think she has a 10% approval rating) there were massive celebrations in the streets. There were musicians, free food stalls, and fireworks. Now of course there are plenty of (mostly elderly) people rioting and claiming that this is the end of democracy (when really its just an example of democracy working...) but they are in contained areas surrounded by police. As far as I know 2 people died and many more are injured but its been due to violence by the pro-Park side (for example, the rioters were trying to flip over a police bus and knocked over a speaker which fell and killed an elderly man who was part of the riot...) I walked through the celebration area the day after the announcement if you'd like to take a look and hear the sounds. Skip to 4:20 unless you want to see my friends new cafe opening party haha :) If you could all do me a really big favor: Please give this video a thumbs up on YouTube here. People have been leaving incredibly nasty comments targeting myself and my family (I have deleted and blocked most of them) and this video now has some of the most down-votes I've ever had on a video :/ That would really mean a lot! Thank you ㅠㅠ Korea now has to vote for a new president so that will be starting as we speak :)
How To Learn A New Language At Home
I've been trying to improve my French recently, and came across these awesome YouTubers called DamonandJo. They have self-taught themselves nearly 6 languages! I believe they speak French, Spanish, Portugese, Italian, German, and of course English! You can either watch the video above (which I suggest cause they have the BEST sense of humor) or check out their tips below: 1. Follow Famous YouTubers in the language you want to learn! There are tons of youtubers in other languages, and often if they are famous enough, there will be english subtitles. Listen to them to hear real people speaking the language rather than a text book! They're usually super entertaining too so it helps :) 2. Follow those YouTubers or famous people on twitter so you see that language each day! The easiest way to get used to a foreign language is to see it all the time and this really helps! 3. Change your phone/facebook/etc language to your desired language! Since you probably already know where everything is in your phone or facebook, you wont be confused and you'll learn a ton of new vocab! 4. Listen to audio books in the language you want!!! Audible has a ton of foreign language books. Try starting with a book you already know well (like Harry Potter for me - I'm trying to read that in Korean right now...) and listen throughout your day! 5. Sign up for foreign magazines or newsletters! Or even better download their app in another language! For example, my boyfriend gets push notification from Le Monde which is a french newspaper :) Even if you only read the headline, its practice. 6. Try cooking a meal using a recipe in a different language! You start to learn that a lot of words you actually already know (for example, sauté means the same thing in french and in korean bokkeum (like bokkeumbap) means fried! so literally "fried rice!" 7. Watch TV shows in the language Duh!!!! 8. Talk to yourself and dont be afraid! Practice speaking whenever you can, even to people who are strangers! be brave! What languages are you trying to learn?!
We Have Forgotten How To Learn With Purpose.
What do you think of when you think of learning? Education? Perfect grades? You think success. And it makes sense. People who work hard, who are smart, who do great in school usually go on to become very successful people. And we all think of the same word when we hear successful right... That's right, money. But the problem is, we have forgotten about the beauty of learning, that lesson going in one ear and out the other. And without knowing how to learn, how can you possibly be prepared for the twists and turns of life ? The point of learning isn't to be better then everyone else. Learning isn't to make you wealthy or to climb one rug higher at your job. It's that kind of reasoning that pushes kids away from school. The point of learning is to maintain your dreams, adjust your expectations, adapt to situations and accomplish everything you ever wanted to do, without feeling regret about any of it. I'm reading a book about an astronaut, it's non fiction and the strangest memoir I have ever read. And he said the one reason he loved his job for 20 years was because he never let his love of being an astronaut hinder on weather or not he actually went into space. Sounds crazy right? But it makes sense. He loves space, loves figuring out how things fly and loves learning everything he can about how to be the best astronaut he can be. He did his part, and love every second of the journey. The getting into space part has too many variables out of his control, so why think of it as anything other then a perk? There have, after all, been amazing astronauts who haven't went into space. And it's that attitude that reminds us that learning isn't to only accomplish one goal, it's to prepare yourself for anything, this way you will always find success. So I think it's time we trust the process. We embrace learning not to move up the ladder. a passion for learning, for genuine curiosity will make us into a better person, even if it outwardly effects nothing but our attitude. We need to remember that societies version of "success" and our version of learning doesn't always see eye to eye. So embrace all knowledge, you never know how far it will get you to shooting for the moon. I mean hey, will preparing for one dream you might accidentally discover another along the way! The universe is pretty crazy like that. You live and you learn.
Pixar changed multiple scenes in 'Inside Out' to cater to International Audiences
What you see depends on the country you live in. If you walk into a movie theater somewhere else in the world, Pixar's 'Inside Out' may look a little different from the American version you saw back at home. From the food to the sports to the cultural mannerisms, some things are slightly different. Pixar created 28 graphics for 45 uniquely different shots to be inserted for local audiences. So far Pixar has made over $553 million to date spanning multiple countries across the world. Director Pete Docter said they wanted the film to remain complex and emotional while making sense with the foreign audience's culture. Sometimes Pixar films aren't strictly perfect domestically so they make some tweaks to create the best product. This isn't the first company to change it's movie for a foreign audience. Marvel with "Iron Man 3" added scenes for Chinese audiences to incorporate Gu Li Duo, a popular Chinese milk drink, and a scene where Iron Man is saved by a famous Chinese character. In Adam Sandler's "Pixels", a scene was taken out so that Chinese audiences would not see the Great Wall of China destroyed. As you can see, your country has a huge influence. Doctor said for 'Inside Out', “We learned that some of our content wouldn’t make sense in other countries. For example, in Japan, broccoli is not considered gross. Kids love it. So we asked them, ‘What’s gross to you?’ They said green bell peppers, so we remodeled and reanimated three separate scenes replacing our broccoli with green peppers.” In this scene, Riley's dad is having a hard time getting her to eat broccoli. She squirms and turns away in disgust as he continuously attempts to have her eat it. In the United States, it is a normal thing for a child to dislike broccoli. But in Japan, broccoli is substituted by bell peppers since Japanese children think those are gross instead. That slight cultural difference changed an entire scene in the film to be more relatable and to evoke EMOTION. Though Hockey is traditionally a Canadian pastime, Hockey is still largely popular in the northern parts of the United States such as US state, Minnesota. Hockey is still just as American for many people however most of the world isn't exposed to hockey frequently which is why Pixar changed it to soccer. Soccer is the world's most popular sport. Docter also mentioned,“We offered a version with soccer instead of hockey since soccer is huge in so many parts of the world. But some countries that are into soccer actually decided to stick with hockey since the characters in the movie are from Minnesota and it makes sense that they’d be hockey fans.” Did you know that even how we read words is different in various parts of the world? Well Pixar took note of that being noted by Docter, "Bing Bong reads a sign in the film to Joy and Sadness. He points at the letters, D-A-N-G-E-R, saying ‘it’s a shortcut.’ Not only did we translate the sign, but we even went so far as to reanimate Bing Bong so that he points to the letters from right to left, instead of left to right to accommodate certain languages.” Do you think it's necessary to change a movie for a foreign audience?

Amazing Video Makes Our Rape Culture Very Obvious.
Trigger Warning: This video (and card) speaks about sexual assault and domestic violence. CARE Norway team decided that it was time to remind us that 1 in 3 women world wide will experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. So they made this video that forces us to accept that we are the reason that sexual violence is so prevalent. Because all those jokes that are "just jokes" leads to a mentality that is way more dangerous then a kid just looking for a few laughs. Check out the video below of a girl speaking to her father; explaining that because she is a female, things will be a lot different then they were for him growing up. My favorite line;"I will be born a girl. Please do everything you can so that that wont stay the greatest danger of them all." So now I ask you, how many times have you been called a bitch, a whore, a slut? Or have heard someone called those names? Or have called someone that? How many times has a girl been insulted and dehumanized because she rejected someone? How many times have we been told to not get to drunk while our male counterparts need not worry about anything but how much money they have for drinks? How many times have you heard a rape joke? How many times did people laugh at it? "I can really be a bitch sometimes." Because of the way these words are thrown so casually after a rejection, we girls start to believe it. We start to doubt our feelings, believe the insults, worry that we aren't "being to outspoken," since since the dawn of time women have been told to keep their mouths shut. Constant insults after the word "no" trains us to believe we are in the wrong. Accepting rape jokes makes people believe that sexual assault isn't a big deal; that it can be brushed off with a laugh or an awkward chuckle. So for the love of god, next time you hear a rape joe, don't laugh. Because like she said, there is some truth behind every joke. And every time you accept behavior like that, you are making the rape culture we live in stronger, and putting women's lives more at risk.
